Wisconsin Rapids WI - Sunset Along the River (NEW Music)
My flight video from last Weekend 2.18.17..
Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wisconsin Rapids (#613)
[Original Airdate: April 6, 2017]
Smack dab in the middle of the state, we found Wisconsin Rapids. True, it’s not hard to find, but it is hard to leave! Wisconsin Rapids is a paper making town, and has been almost 200 years. While this kind, warm town is heavy with history, there are loads of current things to experience, and literally tons of cranberries to be harvested! That’s why we came. Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries in the world, and John had never been in a bog – ever! The owners of Glacial Lake Cranberries treated us to an amazing experience that almost left John speechless (almost, but thank goodness, not quite!). But after we experienced all things cranberry, we learned that the unique geology in the center of our state allowed for the building of what is quickly becoming a world renowned destination for golf. And with a name like “Rapids” you know we spent some time along the river. Wisconsin Rapids is gorgeous. We hated to leave, but it was the perfect place to wrap up our sixth season.

Fox Wisconsin Heritage Parkway: Unlock the Memories
The Fox and Wisconsin Rivers are situated between two of the most navigable water routes in the country, the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. Long stretches of the Fox were not navigable due to strong rapids and currents. Construction of a lock and canal system began in the 1840s. Ultimately, 24 locks spanned the 162-mile stretch between Portage and Green Bay.
To allow round-the-clock navigation, lockmasters and their families lived in government houses built next to the locks. Prompted by the whistle of an approaching barge or boat, the vessel would be raised and lowered in the lock using a hand-operated crank that opened and closed the large gates. With the marked reduction of commercial traffic on the river, the Corps of Engineers closed the last locktender house in the mid 1980s. The Fox River lock system remains one of only two hand-operated lock systems in the United States.
The Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway began researching the history of locktenders in 2010. A reception was held on September 24, 2011 in Appleton, drawing more than 60 locktenders, their families and descendants to share their common history. The oral history project is telling the untold story of the men who made navigation safe for commercial and recreation travel on this river highway.

No need for snow in this week's Outdoor Wisconsin. Judy Nugent takes a Segway tour in Door County, but she has to learn how to ride one first! Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Stevens Point (#707)
[Latest Airdate: May 31, 2018]
[Original Airdate: February 22, 2018]
When John said, Let's get straight to the point, we're so glad we took him literally because Stevens Point earned tons of brownie points! Everyone in this fabulous city pointed us to a great episode, and stayed on point throughout with their pointed remarks.
Point Brewery was an obvious (and great) choice, and you can't talk about Stevens Point without pointing out the trivia contest. But we are so glad when we can point to the not-so-obvious community stars, too. What do governors for dams, wheelchairs, potatoes, toys, tea, women's clothing, Father Fat's food, Iroquois raised beadwork and art paper have in common? Yep. All pointed out in this episode.
But it's pointless to continue with our list because after watching this episode, you will completely get the point. Stevens Point IS the point!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Caledonia & Wind Point (#709)
[Latest Airdate: June 21, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 29, 2018]
So, Caledonia and Wind Point cover a lot of ground in southeast Wisconsin. This big area is home to big animals (like Libby's horses and Jo Don Farm's camels), and big companies (Norco, for one), big bugs (grown at the SC Johnson Institute of Insect Science for Family Health --- yikes!) and a big Wurlitzer organ (under a small house --- no kidding!).
It's also home to people with big talent (especially Bill Reid and Sherry Lou) and places of big beauty (the Wind Point Light House and The Prairie School, just to name a few). There's big fun to be had (surfing and kickball), and you can satisfy your big taste buds (at Sebastian's).
Yep. Caledonia and Wind Point are a big deal!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Beloit (#609)
[Latest Airdate: December 14, 2017]
[Original Airdate: March 2, 2017]
Beloit really surprised us --- and we're not easily surprised. This is a city with a great, paradoxical spirit. Polished and rustic, sophisticated and folksy, old and new, serious and whimsical. Highlights? Forward thinking companies like Universal AET and AccuLynx who are new life to the renovated buildings that were Beloit Corporation. The old Beckman Mill made to work like new again. Thousands of angels under the roof of an old church (not what you're thinking). And no kidding, some of the best food of the season! John literally ate his way through Beloit --- and enjoyed every bite at Bushel & Peck's, Merrill and Houston's and The 615 Club. But it was the fun, hardworking people who made our time in Beloit a week to remember. Yep, the people... and the Ironworks! You have to see this reinvigorated area. The Ironworks is just really cool. And since we love cool, we love Beloit!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Eau Claire (#813)
[Original Airdate: April 4, 2019]
Eau Claire really IS the definition of renaissance. As John Gurda said, if you were familiar with this northwestern Wisconsin city 20 years ago, you’re not familiar with it now unless you live in Eau Claire!
The new Pablo Center for the Arts, lighted bridges and public art, many company headquarters and Phoenix Park have transformed downtown EC. Old foundational places that could never be replaced, like the Court’n House and the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum, retain the roots of this city. And new things in old spaces, like the Lismore and Oxbow hotels, Banbury Place in the old Uniroyal plant, and tons of renovation on the UW-EC Campus prove a commitment to reinvestment and renovation.
This is a city infused with music, youthful energy, Kubb and tons of activity, all supported by investment and commitment. Eau Claire was the perfect place to finish our eighth season!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Appleton (#702)
[Latest Airdate: April 26, 2018]
[Original Airdate: January 18, 2018]
As John said, if the Fox Valley were a state, Appleton would be the capital. Not only is it the largest of the cities in the Fox Valley, Appleton's a large city - period! Energetic, busy, vibrant, loaded with friendly, smart people - it's our kind of place.
This is the first - and only - time we'll ever say, John got to: shoot the Bratzooka at a Timber Rattlers baseball game; fence with a medieval long sword champion; sit in a 3 million dollar private jet; turn and open a 100 year Fox Lock by hand, all by himself!
Yes, John gets special access so you may not get to do those things, but you can eat and marvel like John did at Lombardi's Restaurant. You can shop at Eco Candle and Urban Evolutions. You can stroll the beautiful grounds of Lawrence University, have Henry shine your shoes, and eat the best comfort food ever at the Cozy Corner Café. And, of course, at the Houdini Museum at the Castle, everyone can escape (Get it? Escape? Like Houdini... Ha!).
From now on, in the Around the Corner book, A is for Appleton!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Prairie du Chien (#306)
[Latest Airdate: June 15, 2017]
[Original Airdate: February 13, 2014]
This is an old river town, so sometimes it's tough to sort the facts from the myths. Ghosts in old jails, fish that fall from the sky on New Year's Eve that people kiss, grannies who play basketball, and a man that makes jerky out of just about every creature he catches: Only in Prairie du Chien are those things facts.
Also facts: You can absorb late 19th century family life at Villa Louis, sympathize with the British and American soldiers who fought the only Wisconsin battle of the War of 1812, contemplate the lives of Native Americans by visiting the Indian Effigy Mounds, and then consider the history of the entire universe with the Starsplitters! After that, rejoin life in the early 21st century and eat, shop, quilt, play cards, gaze at the Mississippi, and go to Mass at the oldest Catholic parish in Wisconsin.
John Gurda told us that Prairie du Chien means field of the dog. Since John McGivern took Spanish in high school instead of French, he thought it meant a prairie of chins. See why we need John Gurda?

[Original Airdate: January 10, 2019]
Ripon, Wisconsin. Here’s what we knew before we came: birthplace of the Republican Party, home to Ripon College and Speed Queen washing machines, and used to be home of Rippin’ Good Cookies. What we know now: Ripon is a vertical farming, scrapbooking, pizza making, Clydesdale raising, tuba playing bonanza! Throw in a thriving downtown and the teddy bears that Suki makes from old fur coats and you see why Ripon is John McGivern’s kind of town!

UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION / NORTHWEST ORIENT AIRLINES 1950s FISHING EXPEDITION PROMO FILM 47044
This early 1950s color film encouraging using airplanes to travel to favorite fishing spots was presented as a public service by United Aircraft Corporation and a presentation of The World Outdoors, Inc. There are also multiple verbal reminders to buy US Saving Bonds by narrator Peter Roberts. Shown are a 1948 Northwest Airlines logo and a Boeing 377-10-30 Stratocruiser (:26-1:00). A man pulls up a large fish into a fishing boat in a Canadian river (1:01-1:28). A man fishes from shore in Hawaii and another stands in a river in Alaska (1:58-2:24). An air taxi drops off salmon fisherman on Lake Sebago in Maine at the Migis Lodge. The plane picks them in the morning and take them to a landing where a guide with a canoe waits. They choose flies. Two fly fish as the guide paddles. They both catch salmon before boarding the air taxi directly from the canoe, which returns them to the dock, where they hold up their catch (2:52-6:50). In Yankton, South Dakota, fisherman catch catfish from the banks of the James River. They hand-pull in a 69-pound catfish (6:52-8:47). Passengers disembark from a plane to go to Rainbow Springs State Park in Florida, where a signs says “Home of the World’s Largest Bass.” Underwater video is shown of different sizes of bass. A fisherman casts from a slow-moving motorized rowboat. Footage of the underwater catch is shown as the fish attempts to get off the line. Additional underwater footage is shown (8:49-12:49). The plane next flies to British Columbia for speckled trout fishing at the La Barriere Fish & Game Club. The fisherman stand on rocks jutting out at the foot of the waterfall rapids to cast their lines. The final catch of 12 trout is displayed (12:51-16:05). The plane next travels to Hayward, Wisconsin to fish for muskellunge on Teal Lake. The three fish from a very slow moving motorized rowboat. The fish struggles and leaps out of the water. They display their catch (16:06-19:53). Passengers disembark from a Canadian Pacific airplane at Kamloops Airport in British Columbia, Canada. The fishermen, currently dressed in suits, carry their fishing poles in leather containers. They get into a Little River Fishing Lodge courtesy car. Now dressed in fishing clothes, they travel in motorized rowboats to the fishing area. The giant rainbow trout put up a fight, some leaping out of the water. The fish are then cooked over a campfire, and vegetables are cooked in a cast-iron pan. The men enjoy their fresh meal. They pose with the fish they didn’t eat. They board the Canadian Pacific airplane, which taxis down the runway (19:55-26:45). A Lockheed L-1649 Constellation plane takes off (27:07-27:23).
