The Journal- Wood County Historical Center & Museum: For Comfort & Convenience
In 1816, not long after Ohio became a state, the Ohio General Assembly authorized county commissioners to construct poor houses to care for those unable to provide the basic necessities of life for themselves–food, clothing, and shelter. For Comfort & Convenience: Public Charity in Ohio by Way of the Poor Farm is the current exhibit at the Wood County Historical Center & Museum. We’re joined by the museum’s director, Kelli Kling… the curator, Holly Hartlerode… and Jeff Hall, photographer and Senior Lecturer in the Visual Communication Technology program at Bowling Green State University.
Implements at Wood County Historical Museum
Just south of Bowling Green, Ohio along Linwood Road, sits the Wood County Historical Center & Museum. An amazing location with many historical items to see including pieces from the Oil Boom Era and a small Log Cabin. The main poor house building itself stands at an impressive 30,000 square feet! This is definitely a location that I could spend quite a lot of time at!
Things to do in Wood County Ohio. Bowling Green
looking for things to do near Bowling Green Ohio the Wood County Historical Society is also a museum the grounds are free to walk around on the outside although there is a fee to enter the museum on the inside. There are a lot of old buildings and a lot of history on this property. There is an old Cemetery with an unknown amount of occupants. Many of the people buried there are unidentified. There has been rumors of hauntings although current Staffing does not encourage that type of discussion. if you'd like to know more about the History Museum located in Bowling Green I have other videos from this location.

Wood County Historical Center nears construction goal
The Wood County Historical Center & Museum opened its doors Friday after a year of being closed for a reception detailing accessibility construction progress and a new exhibit.
The museum is undergoing an estimated $1.2 million construction project to install an elevator and other accessibility measures, said Dana Nemeth, museum director.
Thanks to a cultural grant through the state of Ohio’s Capital Bill and the support of Wood County Commissioners, the WCHS has raised over $900,000 to go toward installing an elevator, ADA compliant bathrooms and handicap parking to be located near the new elevator entrance, among other accessibility related renovations.
After receiving a $5,000 grant from the Hancock-Wood Community Trust Fund, a $1,000 grant from the Bowling Green Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and donations from over 250 individuals, the museum is now $300,000 away from meeting its goal, Nemeth said.
The accessibility project entitled “Join Us at the Top of the Stairs” will raise the additional funds through gift shop sales of Klotz gift cards, Elder-Beerman coupon booklets and a Max & Erma’s dine-out fundraiser on March 14.
The new exhibit “Be Your Own Museum: Our Community’s Collections,” which opens to the public Feb. 1, highlights how community members can make history, which is also evident in the push to make the museum accessible to disabled visitors.
“We all know historically it was at one time on the path perhaps to the wreaking ball,” said Tim Brown, R-Bowling Green. “But citizens got involved and preserved artifacts, preserved buildings and enabled us to be in a position where we could do even more to ensure that the public could enjoy this facility and all it that it has to offer.”

Wood County Sheriff Under Fire For Snow Emergency Timing
Christine Long reports:
Bowling Green, OH - Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn is under fire for waiting until 7 a.m. on Monday to make the call to go to a Level 3 snow emergency. Plus, he's facing criticism for comments he made Sunday night to 13abc saying, I think some people want a day off.
13abc's Christine Long is live in Bowling Green continuing our team coverage of the deep freeze.
Wood County remains under a Level 3 snow emergency. The problem is out on the country roads where the heavy wind and drifting snow are undoing all of the hard work by the plows.
This looks like the North Pole.
Maybe, Antarctica or even Hoth.
You expect to see a tauntaun or a polar bear.
But nope, this is Wood County, Ohio, just outside of Bowling Green.
In the city they're bearing down against the arctic blast.
Oh, it's nice, laughs Randy Kinney as he snow blows his driveway. Little chilly. Bundled up so I stay a little warm.
It was buried up to the window here, says Jessica Gregor.
She and her husband are digging out their car which was buried in the snow. It had a foot piled on the roof.
I've been out here for about 30 minutes and already my hair was frozen. I had to turn my hat around because it was completely iced over, says Gregor.
The couple stayed home from work on Monday, like most people, because at 7 a.m. Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn issued a Level 3 snow emergency, essentially shutting the area down.
However, some residents are criticizing the sheriff for not making the call earlier saying he put lives in jeopardy.
On Sunday night, he told 13abc's Bill Hormann that roads were still passable, even calling out one person who called him.
He whined about it, Sheriff Wasylyshyn said during Sunday's 11 p.m. newscast. Then I found out two hours later that he drove six miles to go visit a friend. If you think it's so bad, you can't get out there, you want a level three ... you shouldn't be driving to visit a friend. I think some people want a day off.
On Monday, the sheriff says, It's between them and their employer. And their employer, even if we're in a level three, says you've got to come to work, you've got to come to work.
Sheriff Wasylyshyn is defending his actions.
Did we need to be at a level three at four o'clock in the morning? No, says the Wood County Sheriff. The roads were passable at 4 o'clock in the morning. We've got to take it on what they are at the time. It's a tough decision, I know I'm not very popular right now with a lot of people, but I'm not here for popularity.
Meanwhile, the Gregors couldn't get any traction, but they don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon anyways.
If we don't have to leave the house at all tomorrow, it would be best, says Gregor.
Sheriff Wasylyshyn says once the wind dies down, he'll lift the Level 3 so that people can resume driving.
Bowling Green State University announced it will remain closed on Tuesday, as well as Bowling Green City Schools.
