Wooden Boat Museum on Eastlink TV's Discover NL
The Wooden Boat Museum in Winteron, NL is a landmark for boat building in the Maritimes. Providing workshops and teaching the public how to build a boat is something Jerome Canning is accustomed to, and in this feature, he tries to bring some of that expertise to children.
Boat Building in Winterton, Newfoundland and Labrador
The town of Winterton in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, is home to the Wooden Boat Museum that celebrates the skill and ingenuity of local master boat builders like Jerome, who build skiffs, punts or 'rodneys' using hand tools and local wood. Now a rare art form, watch how Jerome and his crew are passing down this unique skill to younger generations of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Wooden Boats of Newfoundland and Labrador
Along every coastline and in every inlet, cove and bay, you'll find boats of all sizes. More importantly, wooden boats made by the very people who use them for fishing and recreation. These fine vessels are works of art, made with local wood, tools and ingenuity that are true testaments to our long-standing boat building culture and heritage.

I love the oversized dories for the provisions delivered to these isolated outports. I've been in a few of those. Great memories.
The S S Kyle is stranded off Harbour Grace and no one in govt. has ever tried to preserve this icon of Nfld. history. Sad.
I remember going ashore in those huge dories, shown in the video, years ago to Daniel's Harbour, along with refrigerators and stoves, tires and various other sundry goods , before The Road went down there. It was an exciting adventure for a city boy.
I put some of my favourite John White and WGB music to it and this is what I got.

FaceForward: Mark Wareham
Today, very few people know how to build a wooden boat. What was once a common skillset throughout Newfoundland and Labrador has become an afterthought. The tradition survived by being passed down from generation to generation, but is now at risk of being completely forgotten. Mark Wareham, faculty member at the Marine Institute, works closely with the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador in the preservation of the art of wooden boat building and the great historical significance it carries.
After all, it's only by measuring how far we've come that we can imagine how far we'll go.

Oldest Sailboat on the Coast is Getting a Makeover
GABRIOLA ISLAND -- She is 115 years old and about to get an extreme makeover.
Dorothy, a 9-metre sailboat built in Victoria back in 1987, is the oldest known yacht in the pacific northwest, possibly even Canada.
It was built at James Bay's old boatyard and designed by Linton Hope. She cost $1800 to build, a pretty hefty sum for the late 1800's. But it was worth it - Dorothy lasted out on the waters off Vancouver Island for more than one hundred years.
However, she was taken off the waters just under a decade ago and has sat dry in a backroom in BC'S Maritime Museum for nine years.
Until now.
The boat has been sent to Tony Grove's small backyard shipyard on Gabriola Island. Tony plans to spend the fall and winter fixing up the old vessel. He plans to get it sea ready for next June -- in time for Dorothy's 116th Birthday.
The boat will than sail down to Victoria and be on display in Victoria's inner harbour for the Maritime Museum's annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival.
