Wildfires in Northwest District - August 4 2018
THUNDER BAY - WILDFIRE Update - There were three new fires confirmed in the Northwest Region by the early evening of Aug. 4.
At the time of this update, there were 93 active fires in the Northwest Region. Ten of these fires are not under control, eight are being held, 13 are under control and 62 are under observation.
An incoming weather system is expected to put a damper on some high hazard conditions in the west and central parts of the region. The fire hazard is currently high in the Kenora, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Fort Frances and far northern portion of the Nipigon District. Conditions range from moderate to low hazard in the Red Lake, Thunder Bay and north shore areas.
New Fires, Aug. 4
Kenora Fire 101 is located at the north end of Long Pine Lake. The fire has been declared out at 0.1 hectares
Kenora Fire 100 is located on an island on Lake of the Woods, approximately 15 kilometres south of the city of Kenora. The 0.1 hectare fire has been declared out.
Sioux Lookout Fire 107 is located east of Bamaji Lake, approximately 120 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout. The 0.1 hectare fire is under control.
Kenora 71 update
Fire behaviour flared up toward the end of the week on Kenora 71 with the fire making a few minimal excursions due to hot, windy conditions. Saturday’s weather system is expected to have a positive effect in terms of precipitation though plenty of lightning was also recorded in the area at the time of this update. Currently, there are 50 crews on the fire line, challenged by the Kenora District’s largest fire in 30 years which is burning as deep as 40 centimetres into the soil in places.
Travel restrictions in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park
Forest Fires within Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in the Red Lake District have resulted in the closure of canoe routes to backcountry paddlers. Access to a number lakes within the park has also been restricted.

In this Burke Bunch Moment, we fish a Kenora, Ontario lake known for it's great Pike. It's a beautiful lake with no cottages, camps, or anything. In fact we've been going to this lake for decades and have never seen another person on it. Over the years we've caught many a monster here and this year was no exception as our oldest pulled in a 32 pike.

July, 2010, our family of 4 and two black labs (Moose & Mesa) took an adventurous one-week canoe trip up north to Wabakimi Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada.
I did NOT film the most difficult portage of all (down 20-30'cliff), because it was raining and we were at the end of our rope, so to speak (pun intended). Here is another group doing that nasty portage near the waterfalls a couple of years before us:

HIKING THE LA CLOCHE SILHOUETTE TRAIL | PART 3
So we hiked the La Cloche Silhouette Trail in Killarney this past September. In Part 3, we hike out on what seems to be the nicest weather day the whole trip (figures), visit The Crack and COMPLETE THE LA CLOCHE SILHOUETTE TRAIL.
Marian has completed the full trail 6 times and this trip was Hailey's first time.
And for those wondering about my feet! Yes I wore broken in hiking boots and I also wore merino wool IceBreaker hiking socks. Also, I was wrapping my feet with vet tape (commonly seen/used on horses) and moleskin on really bad blisters with the vet tape over top to hold it in place.
I think the reason I got blisters so bad was because:
A) My feet weren't used to hiking that much EVERY day for 8 days
B) My feet were wet on our rain days and they didn't dry out for the following days so they got soggy and rubbed. Although believe it or not, on the rain days while hiking my feet didn't hurt because the water made it seem like a water bed to my feet LOL
C) I don't know. I'm going to try wearing trail running shoes next time and see if that helps. I think my feet needed more breathing room and some people's feet aren't meant for hiking boots. WHO KNOWS!
OH! And the length of the trail is longer than what the Friends of Killarney Trail Guide says. I don't think they count any of the elevation changes when you are hiking which makes a BIG difference in your actual distance as you are at some points climbing up. Just my thought. Although it totally sucked thinking you had a 12km day and it ends up being 16km, especially in the pouring rain and crazy winds.
Overall, a great trip and I'll probably hike it again.
