Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. New Harbor, Maine USA
The lighthouse was commissioned in 1827 by John Quincy Adams and built that year. Due to poor workmanship (salt water was used in the mortar mix), the lighthouse began to crumble and was replaced in 1835. The second contract for the construction stipulated that only fresh water be used. Keeper Isaac Dunham oversaw the construction and wrote in a letter to the US Lighthouse Establishment that the agreement was upheld and the work went well.
The original light was an Argand-Lewis parabolic reflector, lit with candles and with a visibility of 2 miles (3.2 km). Augustin Fresnel invented a superior way of focusing light in the early 1850s and most lighthouses in the US were converted to the Fresnel Lens, with Pemaquid Point receiving a fourth order Fresnel in 1856. The lens is one of only six Fresnel lenses still in service in Maine.[4] The keeper's house was built in 1857.
Marcus A. Hanna, the only man ever awarded both the Medal of Honor (earned during Civil War for bravery on July 4, 1863 [5]) and the Gold Lifesaving Medal (for rescuing life on January 28, 1885 at Cape Elizabeth, once served as keeper of the light. The station was automated in 1934.
By popular vote of Maine residents, the lighthouse was chosen to be featured on the Maine quarter, the 23rd in the 50 State Quarters Program issued by the U.S. Mint. Also depicted is a 3-masted schooner intended to resemble the Victory Chimes. Exposed bedrock descends from the lighthouse to the ocean creating a unique, scenic landscape. The geological history of these formations dates back hundreds of millions of years. These imposing structures have made this lighthouse with its setting one of the most photographed on the Maine coast.
In addition to the image found on the state quarter, an image of Pemaquid Point lighthouse is featured as a possible background in Windows 7.
The lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard and is licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation.
The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Pemaquid Point Light on April 16, 1985
Allen Workman Schoodic Point: History on the Edge of Acadia National Park
Allen Workman, author of Schoodic Point: History on the Edge of Acadia National Park, charts a course through Schoodic Point’s evolution, ecology, challenges and preservation at Schoodic Institute’s Moore Auditorium.
Mr. Workman has lived in the shadow of beautiful Schoodic Point since age fourteen. He has been a member of the historical societies of Maine, MDI, and Schoodic Peninsula, serving as Secretary of the Gouldsboro society. For some time he has been actively tracing the history of the Schoodic Peninsula region, giving occasional talks on the changing landscape of this most enchanting section of Acadia National Park.
His slide talk focuses on the value and interest in surveying the distinctive changes that have happened in a seemingly timeless landscape like Schoodic's. His slide images give us a look at the evolving human ecology affecting swings between development and preservation here, and at human influences on the processes of ecological change at Schoodic.
Copies of Mr. Workman’s new book are available in Winter Harbor at the 5 & 10, Works of Hand in Winter Harbor, and Chapter Two in Corea.

Around Kansas - Wreaths Across America - December 28, 2016
(Frank Chaffin) And we’re back again. It looks like we both got the same memo; we’re wearing our vests today. It’s not because we’re cold because the Dillon House is quite comfortable, it’s just that it’s wintertime now. (Deb Goodrich) You walk outside the Dillon House. Let me tell you, the High Plains of Western Kansas. I work with Jake at the Sale Barn in WaKeeney on Tuesdays because he can’t find any decent help so he’s got me. He bought me a pair of insulated coveralls. Nothing says love, Frank, like a pair of insulated coveralls, let me tell you. I will also tell you, some days that is not enough. It is, yes, winter on the High Plains, it’s not for sissies. It’s not for sissies. (Frank) I don’t know, you’re going to have to have somebody following you around with a camera because I just can’t imagine you tramping around on a farm in coveralls and work gloves and a floppy hat. (Deb) I don’t know why people have such a hard time picturing it, I grew up like that, barefoot and the whole nine yards. But, yes, it’s a challenge. Now speaking of WaKeeney, there’s something else at WaKeeney plays into this next story. The Veterans' Cemetery, State Veterans' Cemetery, and I think we did that in May, when we were featuring the veterans' cemeteries, I think we featured the one in WaKeeney. I don't know if we featured our other state cemeteries or not. We have three other state veterans' cemeteries and some national cemeteries, but the Wreaths Across America. So if you have one of these cemeteries near you, now is the time, I think the wreaths, they're still out there. Now is the time to go see this because it is so beautiful with those, just the simple greenery wreaths with the red ribbon on these veterans' graves, it is beautiful. So this story is all about how this tradition began. WaKeeney and the other three state veterans cemeteries at Fort Dodge, Fort Riley, and Winfield, and our national cemeteries take part each year in the Wreaths Across America project. The effort began with Arlington National Cemetery and now serves hundreds of cemeteries throughout the world. The tradition began with a little boy's visit to our first National Cemetery, Arlington. Morrill Worcester was only a 12-year-old paperboy when he won a trip to the nation's capitol. The images of Arlington stayed with him. Years later, he was the owner of a successful business, Worcester Wreath, when he saw an opportunity in the surplus wreaths at the end of the holiday. He contacted Maine Senator Olympia Snowe and arranged to place wreaths in one of the older sections of Arlington, one not often visited. A number of other individuals and organizations stepped up to help and a tradition was born, a tradition not widely noticed until 2005 when a photograph of those snow-covered, wreath-laden graves was shared on the Internet. Others wanted to do the same. Worcester began sending seven wreaths to every state, one for each branch of the military, and for POW/MIAs. In 2006, with the help of the Civil Air Patrol and other civic organizations, simultaneous wreath-laying ceremonies were held at over 150 locations around the country. In 2007, the Worcester family, along with veterans, and other groups and individuals who had helped with their annual veterans wreath ceremony in Arlington, formed Wreaths Across America, to continue and expand this effort, and support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. The mission of the group is simple: Remember. Honor. Teach. In 2014, Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers laid over 700,000 memorial wreaths at 1,000 locations in the United States and beyond, including ceremonies at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, as well as Bunker Hill, Valley Forge and the sites of the September 11 tragedies. This was accomplished with help from more than 2,000 fundraising groups, corporate contributions and donations of trucking, shipping, and thousands of helping hands. The organization's goal of covering Arlington National Cemetery was met in 2014 with the placement of 226,525 wreaths. The wreath laying is held annually, on the second or third Saturday of December. WAA's annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery has become known as the world’s largest veterans’ parade, stopping at schools, monuments, veterans’ homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach.

FAQ :
How old do you have to be to be a flight attendant?
Most major US carriers are 21 years or older. Some smaller airlines are 19 years or older.
What are your flight benefits?
Varies depending on airline. In general, we fly free on most domestic flights/airlines. To fly international, we pay a slight fee plus airport taxes. Most airlines allow you to add your parents, children, and a spouse OR one registered guest (sibling/boyfriend/girlfriend/etc).
What's your schedule?
It varies. A LOT.
Do you have to pay for the hotel rooms? Do you have to share them?
No and no.
Do you get expense money for layovers?
We do not receive cash in hand when we start a layover. We do, however, receive a minimal hourly per diem (which we do not receive until our next paycheck).
How long are your layovers?
Again, it varies. Could be anywhere from 11 hours to 36 hours.
Which airline do you work for?
A major US carrier :)
Are there height/weight requirements to be a flight attendant?
Strictly speaking, no. However, you must be able to fit in a jumpseat, escape through an exit window, retrieve items from overhead compartments...you know, perform the basic duties of a flight attendant.
Do you need a degree or any prior experience?
High school degree is required; a college degree is recommended. Prior airline experience is not required. Generally speaking, airlines look for candidates who have prior experience working with people (retail, customer service, banking, nursing, etc)
How long until you fly transatlantic/hold a line/what-have-you?
It varies (are you seeing a pattern here?). This varies greatly depending your airline and where you're based with that airline. It's all about seniority.
Choosing a base + relocation :
You get based where you're needed. If you're lucky, the base you want will have openings. Some people have to wait months until their preferred base is open; in the meantime they are based elsewhere. Most airlines do not help pay for your relocation. They'll usually give you a few days off to move, that's it.

A Day Living Off Grid In A Cabin In The Woods
I have been doing this project for a few years now and never really made a video about what a typical day is like. i think most will be quite surprised how normal it is. sometimes we do less work and more relaxing and sometimes we work from light till dark. I work 7 days a week on one thing or another but i prefer to refer to it as living because work isnt the right term really. i hoped to get more footage of my activities doing jobs around the place but it was a miserable day and my camera was getting wet and i didn't want to get lime on it as i was lime plastering. Please be kind to us in the comments. we have invited you in to our home for the day so please be polite guests.

2018 Winter Lecture Series - The Fateful Compromise of 1850
Before the Civil War there was the Compromise of 1850. The arguments between the North and South over slavery in the new territories began to boil over during an era when the United States was becoming a player on the world stage with territory acquired during the recent war with Mexico. Would slavery expand into these new territories or would it be confined to the southern states only?

Never Be Without Power again.
My Three most used sayings are.
1) A house roof looks unfinished until it has solar panels on it.
2) A man is not looking after his family until he is producing his own power.
3) Solar systems can be kind of pricey at first. Having power when no one else does, PRICELESS
