Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Sparta (#804)
[Original Airdate: January 24, 2019]
It’s true that Sparta Wisconsin is the bicycling capital of America, but we found lots of things happening here: soldiers marching, shovelmen building, luthiers crafting, quilters quilting, and, of course, bikers biking. Yes, Sparta likes active people and companies: Fast Eddie and FAST Corp fit right in, and so does John Gurda because he is the real life version of Ben Bikin. After all, John G. has literally been bikin’ all over Wisconsin! John McGivern is more like Ben’s friend, Willbee Ridin… As in, he will be ridin’ in his car back to Sparta because he’s coming for a longer visit!

Riding Bicycles at Tunnel #3
Footage from a bike ride on May 25, 2012.
We took our bikes out on the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail in Western Wisconsin and rode out to Tunnel #3 and back. Not much footage of the ride itself, but some neat footage in and around he tunnel.
Before taking you through the tunnel, we explore around what was once a village named Summit. It is the highest point on this part of the line/trail. While at Summit, we checked out the Stone Flume, built to help divert water off the hill and prevent washouts.
Tunnel #3 is around 3800 feet long and is very wet inside with many running springs. Nobody comes out of this Tunnel dry! Interior temp hovers between 50 and 55 degrees. Took the camera out and with the help of a very bright flashlight, caught some fairly decent footage inside the tunnel.
The Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail is built on an old railroad line that runs through some of the valleys and coulees in Western Wisconsin. It is part of a Statewide trail system, built mostly on abandoned railroad lines. This trail is well worth checking out some weekend. It definitely gets the NJP Stamp of Approval. :)

Sparta Elroy Tunnel #3
So I recently got a mountain bike, since I'm currently living in the bicycle capital of America. I thought I would finally check out the Sparta-Elroy State trail and it was pretty cool. I would definitely recommend bring a good flashlight if you ever plan on biking the trails. Enjoy the vid! (P.S. I know I'm rather dramatic)
Burlington Wisconsin Biking
Seven Waters Trail
The Seven Waters Trail passes near: Wind Lake, Waubeesee Lake, Muskego Creek, Fox River, Long Lake Creek, White River and Echo Lake. The trail begins at Highway 142 at Bushnell Park in the Town of Burlington, coming into the City of Burlington near Riverside Park, following the beautiful Fox River. The trail runs north along the east side Highway 36 crossing Highway 36 to join a newly constructed segment in the Rochester area. This new segment of the trail winds through Saller Woods, connecting to Eagle Case Park, and then joins the previous trail to run north past Waterford and Wind Lake. The construction of the new segment creates a seamless link from one end of the county to the other. The final segment of the trail is on the east side of Highway 36 and proceeds northward to the Waukesha County line (City of Muskego). The new segment of the trail is blacktop with the remainder gravel.
White River Trail
11 miles of this new state trail are open for biking. The trail begins at Spring Valley Road just west of Burlington off Highway 36 and goes through Lyons and Springfield. Takes you past the Pedal & Cup at Springfield (bike rentals, snacks and drinks). The final segment of the trail runs into Elkhorn. The crushed limestone tail takes you past numerous bridges, scenic vistas, quaint towns, farmlands and wetlands.

Wisconsin is fast becoming a bicycling mecca with its Rails to Trails program and other individual bike trails across the state.
