Seedless lemons grown in California
(4 Dec 2019) LEAD IN:
The days of finding seeds in your G&T could be over - thanks to the arrival of the seedless lemon.
Premium, naturally seedless, non-GMO lemons are now available in US stores.
STORY-LINE
They may look like normal lemons.... but look a little closer and you'll see they're missing an important feature: seeds !
'Wonderful Seedless Lemons', a new variety of premium naturally seedless, non-GMO lemons are now available on store shelves in the US.
Limited seasonal production is now available until May 2020.
The lemons are packed in a bag of six that sell for 2.99 US Dollars at Ralph's grocery stores throughout Los Angeles. That is around 50 cents per seedless lemon compared to 69 cents per regular lemon.
The goal of this new lemon is simply to improve the experience of those who find seeds in their lemons a nuisance !
The company behind bringing seedless to market is Los Angeles based The Wonderful Company.
With 10,000 employees worldwide, the 4.6 billion US Dollar global company is America's largest citrus and nut grower.
Adam Cooper, Senior Vice President of Marketing at The Wonderful Company says seedless lemons take the hassle of pesky seeds out of baking, cooking and squeezing into recipes.
It's a non-GMO project verified seedless lemon and what that means is every time you open your lemon you're not going to get any seeds. It came to be, we partnered with an Australian farmer who first found this, we brought it over to California, we planted it in our orchards, and Voila we had Wonderful Seedless Lemons, he explains.
Cooper describes the lemons as juicy and flavourful with a smooth rind that requires no pollination to propagate.
David Karp, citrus researcher at University of California, Riverside says this product has been a long time coming:
He says the Wonderful Seedless Lemons variety was originally discovered in Queensland, Australia by a farmer who studied thousands of lemon buds, in search of the perfect seedless lemon.
Using innovative breeding techniques over many years, he finally developed a seedless lemon tree in his orchard and says the Seedless Lemon from The Wonderful Company stemmed from this discovery.
There's a farm called 2PH, where does that name come from? 2PH is actually the PH acidity of lemon juice. They developed these varieties starting about 20 years ago by radiating Bugwood with gamma radiation that induced spontaneous mutations. They evaluated a thousand or more seedlings and several of them turned out to be just what they were looking for. Lemons just like normal lemons that were highly productive and didn't have seeds. Everything but the seeds, says Karp.
He explains that scientists found that if we subject vegetative material of citrus varieties to gamma rays, one of the changes that may evolve eventually is that the fruit will be seedless.
He says no chromosomes or genetic material are exchanged or inserted.
He says it just happened naturally so it's totally non GMO.
In Somis, California, 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles, Lemon Hill Grove is one of the orchards in California where The Wonderful company is growing its seedless variety.
A square mile of rolling hills are covered with lemon trees as far as the eye can see with trees about three years old.
Etienne Rabe, Vice President of Agronomy at Wonderful Citrus, which grows, ships and packs the fruit, says the company plans to expand its production to provide year round seedless lemons:

A Cultural Tale of California’s Citrus Industry
California Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside, CA beautifully preserves one of Southern California’s important historical, cultural and agricultural contributions: citrus farming. In 1873, California’s citrus industry took off when the United States Department of Agriculture mailed two Washington Navel orange trees to Eliza Tibbets, one of the early settlers and founders of Riverside. Word quickly spread of how these trees, coupled with perfect soil and weather conditions in Southern California, produced a sweet and flavorful fruit.
By 1893, Riverside was the wealthiest city per capita in the United States and dozens of new citrus growing communities were created around it – including Rialto, Fontana, Bloomington, Redlands, Loma Linda & South Riverside (now Corona). Citrus farmers flocked to California in what became known as the “Second Gold Rush” and by 1901, there were a staggering 4.5-million citrus trees in California. The industry required a large workforce and immigrant workers quickly filled the need. Native California Indians were among the first to farm the new California Gold,” but anti-Native American sentiment resulted in a decline in the workforce. The Native Americans were mostly replaced by Chinese immigrants, but soon enough – thanks to anti-Chinese sentiment & The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 – they too were replaced. This time, Japanese immigrants filled the void and became the largest of any labor group in the entire citrus industry. However, once again, anti-Japanese sentiment in the United States soon forced them out and they were eventually replaced by Hispanic immigrants.
In the 1920’s, the Cristero War in Mexico – spawned by the imposition of secularist and anti-Catholic articles in Mexico’s Constitution – resulted in hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens immigrating to the United States. They quickly filled the void in California’s citrus industry and soon enough they became the largest labor group in the entire industry. For a small $5 entry fee, you can explore California State Historic Park for yourself and learn more about these immigrant work group’s contribution to Southern California’s cultural and agricultural heritage.

Wild Citrus in a Florida Forest? Why It's a Big Deal.
Why are we so excited about wild citrus in central Florida?
Well, sadly the reason is because more than half of the state has lost all species & varieties of citrus to the HLB disease.
The only citrus still surviving the epidemic has been heavily treated with extreme chemical & antibiotic application.
If you missed our previous video talking about why we don’t sell citrus trees & want to learn more about this subject, here is the link -
**It also helps to go back & read the comment section of that video. There are a lot of great ideas there & even more added to the conversation!**
HLB (HuangLongBing) is a disease that has spread throughout every garden, grove or backyard. It is caused by bacteria, transmitted by the Asian Citrus Psyllid, a problematic insect that bores it’s way into the tree, causing yellowing & splotchy mottling of the leaf, leading to defoliation, stunted growth, flowers that fall off, irregular shaped bitter fruit with thick peel. Eventual death of the tree begins with dieback of twigs & branches & loss of vigor.
Why is this happening in Florida & what can we learn from this?
The burden of citrus monoculture across the state over the past century came with an all time cost. This disease has completely plummeted the industry & left it near impossible to grow citrus organically in the majority of the state.

California Massive Power Ouage Includes Arizona and Mexico
Check out this live feed for the breaking news on California
A major power outage knocked out electricity to more than 2 million people in California, Arizona and Mexico on Thursday, bringing San Diego and Tijuana to a standstill and leaving people sweltering in the late-summer heat in the surrounding desert.
Two nuclear reactors were offline after losing electricity, but officials said there was no danger to the public or workers. FBI officials ruled out terrorism while power plant authorities struggled to find the cause of the outage that started shortly before 4 p.m. PDT.
San Diego bore the brunt of the blackout; most of the nation's eighth-largest city was darkened. All outgoing flights from San Diego's Lindbergh Field were grounded and police stations were using generators to accept emergency calls across the area.
The trolley system that shuttles thousands of commuters every day was shut down and freeways were clogged at rush hour. Trains were stopped in Los Angeles, an Amtrak spokesman said, because there was no power to run the lights, gates, bells and traffic control signals.
Police directed traffic at intersections where signals stopped working.
In Tijuana, people wandered out of their hot homes into the street to cool off while restaurants scrambled for ice to save perishable food.
The outage extended from southern parts of Orange County to San Diego to Yuma, Arizona. It also affected cities south of the border across much of the state of northern Baja. Border officials said crossings into California are open.
It feels like you're in an oven and you can't escape, said Rosa Maria Gonzales, a spokeswoman with the Imperial Irrigation District in California's sizzling eastern desert. She said it was about 115 degrees when the power went out for about 150,000 of its customers.
In San Diego, Blake Albert Jordan, 20, saw a trolley come to a screeching halt as he neared the platform. Dozens of passengers emptied onto the tracks when the doors opened.
Jordan said he called about 20 friends and family to pick him up in San Diego's Mission Valley, where he was visiting a friend, to his home in suburban Lemon Grove. None offered to venture on the roads.
A transmitter line between Arizona and California was severed, said Mike Niggli, chief operating officer ofSan Diego Gas & Electric Co., causing the outage. The extreme heat in some areas also may have caused some problems with the lines.
