The Tallest Man in the World: Robert Wadlow - The Alton Giant
Robert Wadlow, also known as the Alton Giant, the Giant of Illinois, and Bob, was an American who became famous as the tallest person in recorded history for which there is irrefutable evidence. He was born and raised in Alton, Illinois.
Wadlow reached 8' 11.1 in height and weighed 439 lbs at his death at age 22. His growth continued into adulthood and showed no signs of stopping. His height was due to, hyperplasia; of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone.
Not only was he the world's largest boy scout, but he still holds the Guinness Book World record for being the tallest man. He was taller than his father by the age of 8, and in elementary school, they had to make a special desk for him due to his size. As an adult, he was a member of the Freemasons and his Freemason ring was the largest ever made.
Wadlow became a celebrity after his 1936 U.S. tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus. He appeared with Ringling Brothers at Madison Square Garden and the Boston Garden in the center ring, never in the sideshow. In 1938, he did a promotional tour with the International Shoe Company. They provided him his shoes free of charge. Wadlow rationalized that he was working in advertising, not being exhibited as a freak.

World’s TALLEST MAN of all time!? The GIANT Robert Wadlow!
World’s TALLEST MAN of all time!? GIANT?! (Robert Pershing Wadlow, February 22nd, 1918 – July 15th, 1940.)
Robert Wadlow -- otherwise known as the Giant of Illinois and the Alton Giant -- is the tallest person in the history of the world for whom irrefutable proof exists!
He was the undisputed tallest man in the world during his short lifetime; Mr. Wadlow reached a staggering height of 2.72 metres (8 ft 11.1 inches), and weighed 199 kilograms (439 pounds) at his death at 22 years of age.
His gigantic size and extreme growth throughout his childhood and early adulthood resulted from hyperplasia of his pituitary gland (and the subsequent volume of human growth hormone produced).
The eldest of 5 children, Mr. Wadlow was born to Addie Johnson and Harold Wadlow in Alton, Illinois, USA.
As a quintessential gentle giant he was much loved in his home-town, as well as becoming a reluctant national celebrity as he travelled the country doing educational and promotional work.
One year before he died, the quietly spoken Mr. Wadlow surpassed John Rogan as the tallest person ever.
Tragically, Robert Pershing Wadlow, died far too young due to a parasitic infection brought about by a faulty leg brace (and exacerbated by an auto-immune disorder).
What an extraordinary man! A genuine giant, the biggest of them all!
The music -- called Final Preparation -- was composed by Stoyan Ganev.

Wadlow's size began to take its toll he required leg braces to walk and had little feeling in his legs and feet. Despite these difficulties, Wadlow never used a wheelchair.
Wadlow became a celebrity after his 1936 U.S. tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus and his 1938 promotional tour with the INTERCO. He continued participating in tours and public appearances, though only in his normal street clothes. His shoes were provided to him free of charge by a shoe company for which he did promotional work and appearances. Wadlow possessed great physical strength, until the last year of his life, in which his strength and his health in general had begun to deteriorate rapidly.
One year before his death, Wadlow passed John Rogan as the tallest person ever. On June 27, 1940, he was measured at 8 ft 11.1 inch by doctors C. M. Charles.
On July 4, 1940 (11 days before his death), during a professional appearance at the Manistee National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent parasitic infection. Doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened due to an autoimmune disorder, and on July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep at the age of 22
