Joe DeMarco Life Service Award: 2013 NBWA Convention
The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) honored a few of the most talented industry leaders during the NBWA 76th Annual Convention and Trade Show, September 29 -- October 2, 2013, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. NBWA's highest honor, the NBWA Life Service Award, was presented to Joseph Joe DeMarco, chairman of the Board of Directors for High Grade Beverage based in South Brunswick, New Jersey.
DeMarco was born in Philadelphia in 1935, and he served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and as a First Lieutenant in the New Jersey National Guard before joining his family's beer distribution business. DeMarco has run High Grade Beverage in New Jersey since 1961. His father Nicholas originally founded the company in 1940 with Butch Levine. In the past five decades, the company has experienced tremendous growth. Today High Grade Beverage serves a seven-plus county area from two warehouses.
In addition to decades of participation in the New York and New Jersey state beer distributor associations, Joe has devoted years of service as a valuable member of the NBWA Board of Directors. On top of his contributions to the beer distribution industry, he has worked with countless community organizations. From his service to St. Peter's Medical Center to the American Cancer Society, Knights of Columbus and New Brunswick Elks, he is a true humanitarian and role model for other business leaders.

This Map Shows Where American Accents Come From
When you're traveling to another part of the US than you're originally from, it might be surprising to hear how different the locals sound. For instance, a New Yorker will likely speak the same English language in a completely different accent from a native Texan. How did Americans get so many distinctive accents?

Following is the transcript of the video:
NEW ENGLAND
Let's start with New England, which was one of the first US regions to develop its own American English accent. Today, a speaker from New England might say Were you gonna plagiarize the whole thing for us? You have any thoughts of your own on this matter? Is that your thing; you come into a bar and read some obscure passage and pretend...you pawn it off as your own?
NEW YORK
For such a geographically small area, New York City certainly has a bunch of distinctive accents. But in general, its accents evolved from a mixture of its Dutch and English roots and numerous waves of immigration.
A modern speaker from New York probably won’t sound like what you hear in movies like Hey, I'm walking here! I'm walking here!
They’re more likely to say Deep dish pizza is not not only better than New York pizza, it's not pizza.
DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY
New York’s New Jersian and Pennsylvanian neighbors sounded quite different.
Nowadays, someone from Philly might say We're a regular family. We watch Philly jawn on TV. We go down to the Jersey Shore. But when we want great hoagies, discount prices on beer, and a great atmosphere we go to Lee's Hoagies in Horsham, PA.
SOUTHERN COAST
Let’s take a look at what went on down south.
The southern coast of the United States has a variety of different accents. One example is Southern coastal white. What concerns me about the American press is this endless...endless attempt to label the guy some kind of kook.
AFRICAN AMERICAN
Other southern dialects preserved some of the original remnants to this day. They come over here and get oysters and clam and go fishing because they're right down the road. They're right in Brunswick or Savannah or Jacksonville.
Much later, a wave of African Americans migrated from the American South to urban centers in the North, mixing their accents together. Being a kid from New York City, I mean from Brooklyn. And my aunt — God bless her soul — she used to always take me to The Rockettes — you know, the Easter show and the Christmas show.
APPALACHIANS
he Ulster-Scots had a significant influence on many American dialects in the South and West. Most of the original accent has disappeared, and today, an American from Tennessee might sound like this. Now, I am just who I am. I'm not always nice. I choose to be good. I choose to have a good attitude because I want people to know. I am a girl with many colors.
MIDWEST
As the Appalachian settlers headed west, their accents joined with speech patterns from the North.
The Midwest has many diverse accents. Today, a speaker from the Great Lakes might say I was born in the middle of the century in the middle of the country; a classic baby boomer.
Or more famously, We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
While another from Wisconsin/Minnesota/the Dakotas might say If either of these men draw, I'm gonna be forced to shoot some people, and I don't want to do that.
TEXAS
Down in Texas, a very distinct accent developed. The famous Texan accent we know from movies like They shot and killed a state senator named Bibs in Waco, Texas. has started to level out. Visitors to big cities like Houston might be surprised to hear something more like Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to beautifully capture the profundity of deep southern culture.
CALIFORNIA
Last but not least is the West Coast, which had a very different mix of immigrants compared to the East Coast. California doesn’t come close to having one, distinct accent. A modern-day speaker might sound like We woke up the next morning on his actual birthday. And I told him I wanted to take him somewhere to lunch for his birthday. or What's so powerful about this novel is everyone has their own interpretation to these characters.
These are just a handful of American accents...and they’re still evolving as we speak. We’ll have to check back in a century or so from now to see what happens next.

ENTERTAINMENT DAILY: ENT1- BIG DAY OUT
English/Nat
STORY: BIG DAY OUT PT 1
LOCATION: SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
DATE: 26 JANUARY 2001
Down under, it's summer music festival time and Australia's biggest travelling roadshow - The Big Day Out - is currently doing the rounds of the country's capital cities with bands such as Coldplay, PJ Harvey and Placebo along for the ride.
But the Big Day Out fast became the Big Day Out of Order when hundreds of concertgoers were treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration as the temperatures soared to more than 36 degrees Celcius on the day of the Sydney concert.
Tempers were also raised with one of the main international acts, Limp Bizkit, who pulled out of the event upset at security arrangements after several people were hurt in a crush, one seriously, in the mosh pit during one of their performances.
With crowd numbers swelling at 55,000 people - this year's 's Big Day Out promised to be Sydney's biggest ever.
For visiting acts, who already had two warm up Big Day Out concerts under their belts - playing at Auckland, New Zealand and the Gold Coast in Queensland - it was Sydney that really was the main event.
All up, the event hopes to attract more than 200-thousand people as it tours the nation but it seems the Big Day Out is getting a little too big for its own good.
A last minute cancellation from headliners Limp Bizkit didn't help and neither did the heat as fans packed the main arena in soaring summer temperatures to watch top international and Australian bands take the stage
The Big Day Out is a favourite of bands like Placebo who are looking to escape the northern hemisphere winter.
Top Australian band, Killing Heidi, played last year's Big Day Out on one of the minor stages but with a hit album since then, they finally made it to the main arena.
DJ Carl Cox, who last played Sydney during the Millennium Celebrations, brought dance beats to the Australians that weren't there for the many guitar-based bands.
Although it may seem unusual, the Australian concertgoers, because of the excessive heat, were choosing to drink water rather than beer. The blistering heat had event security and volunteer medics dispensing 12 litres of suncreen and 80-thousand cups of water to cool off the crowd.
The weather was foremost on the minds of the visiting acts. With a severely sunburnt face, Johnny Buckland from Coldplay obviously wasn't used to the severity of Australia's heat.
I've burnt myself. I had Factor 60 on and it still got through. said Buckland.
Whilst Bez, who hails from cold, rainy Manchester in the North of England thought he was going to die from the intolerable heat.
But there were places to hide from the sun. The Big Day Out prides itself on being different to other music festivals by offering multiple venues within the event.
Big Day Out promoter, Ken West, says the Big Day Out caters for the channel surfing generation, and offers a wide variety of entertainment to a wide variety of audience.
However, with The Big Day Out being so successful and dragging in so many young people, another music festival was foremost on everyone's minds - Glastonbury, which is one of the longest running and most popular music festivals and which has been cancelled this year due to crowd control.
PJ Harvey is a Glastonbury veteran, she was first taken to the event by her parents when she was nine years old.
As music festivals such as Glastonbury, and the Big Day Out, get bigger and bigger, the fear is that they do not grow to the extent that crowd safety is jeopardised.
It seems this example is endemic of many large scale music festivals - Glastonbury has been battling similar problems with crowd control and safety and is starting to worry bands.

2013 St. Patrick's Day from New York & Australia
Australia : Around 60,000 people were expected to take part in the city's celebrations of Australia's Irish heritage, according to local media reports.
Spectators lined the streets for an annual parade, with young people dressed in traditional costumes getting the biggest cheers as they waved.
Revellers also celebrated with a pint or two of Guinness dry stout at one of Sydney's many Irish pubs, which were enjoying one of their busiest trading days.
Australia has marked Saint Patrick's Day on 17 March since 1810, when the then Governor of New South Wales Lachlan Macquarie declared the date an official day of celebration.
New York : The Irish, their descendants and the Irish for the day prepared to don green and pay tribute to Hibernian heritage as a weekend of St. Patrick's Day celebrations was set from New York's Fifth Avenue to the Louisiana bayou to Dublin's Parnell Square.
With the holiday itself falling on a Sunday, many observances were scheduled instead for Saturday because of religious observances. In New York, a massive St. Patrick's Day Parade that predates the United States was due to proceed Saturday, with Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny among the marchers. Chicago was preparing for its own big parade and an eye-catching local custom: dyeing the Chicago River green.
Dublin's five-day St. Patrick's Day festival was unfolding with a new addition. For the first time, up to 8,000 visitors from around the world were due to march in a People's Parade on Sunday, when Ireland's capital city also intends hold its usual procession of bands and pageantry.
Kenny, who visited Chicago for St. Patrick's Day last year, was again making the holiday a jumping-off point for an extended trip to the U.S., with stops in Washington and on the West Coast over the ensuing several days.
I will use my visit to promote Ireland's many strengths and to further reinforce our deep and abiding political and economic relationship with the United States, Kenny said in a statement this week.
He and President Barack Obama were scheduled to meet at the White House on Tuesday and exchange shamrocks, a tradition that dates to Harry S. Truman's administration. Obama also is slated to meet separately Tuesday with Peter Robinson, the leader of Northern Ireland's Catholic-Protestant government.
In Maine, St. Patrick's Day prompted Gov. Paul LePage to relent on a vow to veto any bill that reached his desk before lawmakers pass his proposal to pay a state debt to hospitals. He signed a measure Friday allowing bars to serve alcohol a few hours earlier than usual, starting at 6 a.m., on the Sunday holiday.
About 1,500 miles southwest, the city of Houma, La., was holding its unconventional celebration — an Irish-Italian parade, with a celebration that features both Irish cabbage and Italian sausage — on Sunday. The event resumed last year after a 10-year hiatus.
In Rolla, Mo., the Missouri University of Science and Technology continued a St. Patrick's tradition that began in 1908, when students declared that the patron saint of Ireland also was the patron saint of engineers. A slate of events, which earlier this week included a student portraying St. Patrick being transported downtown on a manure spreader, were to wrap up with a parade Saturday.
Annapolis, Md., held its first St. Patrick's Day parade March 10. A 40-year-old parade tradition took on a sense of renewal March 3 in Belmar, N.J., a shore town that took a heavy blow from Superstorm Sandy.
But along with the festivities, in some places, came warnings from police that they would be on the lookout for drunken drivers and other misbehavior.
New Jersey Transit officials said alcoholic beverages would be barred Saturday on any train between Manhattan and Hoboken, N.J., a nightlife-friendly city across the Hudson River. Transit police arrested 16 people during St. Patrick's Day last year, including two people who were charged with aggravated assault on two conductors.
In Baltimore, where last St. Patrick's Day weekend was marred by a videotaped beating of a visiting man, fights and vandalism, police were stepping up patrols and barring drinking in an area where revelers spilled out of bars last year.

Why Strippers Are Becoming Bartenders (HBO)
Strip clubs may be a place to party for some, but for female entertainers, they are an office space. And over the past few years that workplace has changed dramatically thanks to an entirely new job position moving in: bartenders.
Even though bartenders don’t get up on stage, the strip club bartenders dress similarly to the dancers and shake it behind the bar. Because customers tend to throw money into the air as they would to a dancer, rather than handing them the money directly, bartenders have found themselves fighting with surrounding employees, including dancers, to acquire their tips.
Some strippers have started to organize a city wide strike to address the competition between the women, along with other issues that affect the industry.
“I’ve had resentment as a dancer, I remember resenting bartenders,” Chela, who recently transitioned from dancing to bartending, tells VICE News. “It becomes very aggressive. People forget who they are when they start to see money.”

Most surprising about the viral dance craze that is the #GitUpChallenge is how it's touched every demographic. Age, race and gender don't make a difference in being swept up by #BlancoBrown and his dance steps — even police officers are getting into it!
This video is a mash-up of hot cops doing 'The Git Up' Challenge videos. One or two might have been ordered to do their department proud by sliding to the left and right but most butterfly and cowboy boogie because they're feeling it.

Every lane has a pattern. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explores how they change the game.
Bowling isn’t just about a great ball and good form — if you want to understand the sport, you have to understand the lane.
Every bowling lane, including the one in your neighborhood alley, is coated with an oil pattern to protect the wood. But these patterns aren’t just for protection — the way in which oil is applied to the lane can affect the speed and direction of your ball.
These patterns are so important that recreational bowlers and professional bowlers bowl on vastly different patterns — the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) even classifies the patterns it uses in tournaments.
Phil Edwards met with professional bowler Parker Bohn III at his childhood bowling alley, Howell Lanes in Howell, New Jersey. He guided Phli through the complex strategy a pro bowler uses when encountering different oil patterns. Not only do they have to assess which pattern is in use, but they also have to judge how that pattern changes as the oil shifts and slides over the day. Knowing how to play a specific lane can be the difference between a title and second place.
But these patterns aren’t just for the pros — they’re relevant to recreational bowlers as well. Watch the video to see how you can use these patterns to step up your game.
