“Unusual Event” Declared at South Carolina Nuclear Facility
OCONEE COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA — Fires and explosions were reported at the Oconee Nuclear Station on Sunday.
According to WYFF, the facility has declared an “unusual event.” Emergency crews were responding. The fire chief tells local media a transformer caught fire.
Officials also said there is no public threat due to this incident. Few details were available.
MORE: The Oconee Nuclear Station is a nuclear power plant located on Lake Keowee near Seneca, South Carolina, and has an energy output capacity of over 2,500 megawatts. It is the second nuclear power plant in the United States to have its operating license extended for an additional twenty years by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) (the application for the Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland preceded it). Here's how the alert sirens sound at the N.J. nuclear power plant
70-plus emergency sirens around the Artificial Island nuclear generating complex were tested on Tuesday. The sirens -- 34 in New Jersey and 37 in Delaware -- located within the 10-mile radius of the three reactors operated by PSEG Nuclear will sound for three minutes.
They are part of the alert system that would inform those living near the Artificial Island complex in case of an emergency at one of the nuclear plants. Read:

Today, the Senate will vote to start President Trump's Senate impeachment trial with a resolution that sets up the rules of the trial, including how long it will last and how long everyone has to speak. Each side will get a set amount of hours to present its case for or against the president.
President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son. How To RV in the Winter
We've been RV snowbirds for 8 winters in a row, mostly in the Desert Southwest. This year, for the very first time, we'll be spending the winter in the RV in a northern location.

Granted, the Lower Mainland of British Columbia isn't exactly Manitoba when it comes to winter, but we're far enough up in the mountains to get some freezing temperatures and snow here.
We show you all the steps we're taking to winter in our motorhome. We'll demonstrate how to keep the water hose from freezing and how to keep ourselves warm too. We'll cover water hose insulation, heat tape, the differences between all five sources of heat we have available, moisture & humidity control, and even pest control.
We'll also be using our Extend-a-Stay (also known as a Stay-a-While or an Extend-a-Flow) to connect to a large external propane tank.
SInce this is our first time dealing with winter in the rig, we've done a lot of reading and learned a lot from our friends and neighbors up here in beautiful, friendly BC. The site we're on has 30-amp electric, so we have to be particularly aware of our power usage.
Luckily, Birgit & Greg, whose site we're using, were nice enough to let us tap into their super-size external propane tank (we'll be paying for the propane we use, of course). So propane shouldn't be a problem, but we'll still want to keep our usage to a minimum, since it's expensive, and propane use can cause excess moisture to build up in the rig.
There are lots of RVers who know way more than we do about RVing in REAL winter deep freeze conditions, but we wanted to give other cold weather newbies a feel for some of the steps we've taken to prepare for it. We've seen a lot more online about winterizing an RV for storage, and we wanted to add some information about living on board too.
NOTE: We mention using fine 0000 steel wool in this video. It is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, and care should be used in storing and using it. To see our video demonstrating how to start a fire using only steel wool and a 9-volt battery, click here:

BAHAMAS ALL-STARS MARCHING BAND TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL PARADE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 8, 2019 — The Bahamas All-Stars Marching Band will be among the 15 marching bands that will participate in the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade on Saturday, April 13, 2019 in downtown Washington, D.C.
This was confirmed in a press release by Band Director Yonell Justilien, who said the band “will be arriving to Washington on tour buses from Orlando on Friday morning, April 12th and leaving on the evening of the 14th for Orlando.” Including persons travelling with the band, the group will include a contingent of 108 persons.
“The reputation of the band’s outstanding musical ability, marching and performance skills from both local and international recognition continues to open doors to showcase the talent of young Bahamians in all areas of Performing Arts,” the release said. “We are delighted to carry the Bahamian flag to this major event in Washington DC. Our members are looking forward to putting on an exciting show with a Bahamian flare to the American audience.”
“This is another major accomplishment for our youth development organization which follows our previous performances such as the St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Ireland (2017), Florida Classics in Orlando (2011, 2012 & 2015), Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York (2014) and Howard University Homecoming Battle of the Bands in Washington DC (2013 – crowned champions).
“One of our main objective is to expose young Bahamian talent to the local and international community. I am confident that Washington and the millions of spectators and television viewers will enjoy the entertainment and high energy Bahamas All-Stars will bring to the Capital. The talents of our youth have been sharpened by these high-level exposures and there have been many tangible accomplishments, which we note as indicators of the same. To date, over 180 of our members have been awarded both academic and music scholarships from various universities across the United States and Canada. Many more are enrolled at the University of The Bahamas and others with the uniform branches of The Bahamas.”
The one-mile parade route travels along historic Constitution Avenue, beginning at 7th Street and ending at 17th Street. Along the way it passes the National Archives, the Department of Justice, Smithsonian Museums, the Washington Monument and the White House.

House Democrats prosecuting President Donald Trump's impeachment trial have started the second day of opening arguments. Democrats alleging a “corrupt scheme” by Trump involving Ukraine are trying to win over not just fidgety senators but an American public deeply divided by Trump's actions.
Prosecutors are relying on the same loops of videotaped testimony after Trump's allies in the Republican-controlled Senate blocked new witnesses.
