Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market | Wualai Road Walking Street
Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market | Wualai Road Walking Street
The Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market or also know as Wualai Road Walking Street is a must visit in Chiang Mai. They offer many good food and local products. Some of the things here are local produce and it is different than the night markets in Bangkok.
This is a very long night market and probably one of the longest night markets in Thailand. This is a must visit!
What to do at Saturday Night Market Chiang Mai
With all the different markets in Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market –also known as Saturday Night Walking Street- is a definitely a must-visit for visitors to Chiang Mai. The market opens every Saturday afternoon around 16:30 and lasts until midnight. The Saturday Night Market is located along the length of Wualai Road, which is the former silver quarter of Chiang Mai, starting just south of Chiang Mai Gate.
Approx. 2 kilometres in length, Chiang Mai Saturday Day Night Market spreads also along the sois (alleys) leading from Wualai Road. Most items offered here have a creative and artistic touch to it; wood, alloy and zinc are the most common used materials for these handicrafts.
The following is a selection of things to do at Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market:
- Shopping, especially Sa-paper umbrellas, hand-painted fans and pictures, table cloth and much more
- Indulging into Thai street food such as Pad Thai (stir-fried vermicelli noodles), Sai Oua (northern Thai sausage) or for the adventurous among you, fried insects like grasshoppers or crickets
- Visiting Wat Sri Suphan, also known as the Silver Temple and its complex
- Attending a monk chat and meditation introductory course
- Thai massage or reflexology in the middle of the market
- Or just immersing into the bustling atmosphere, watching vendors haggling with customers and inhaling mouthwatering food aromas
Most items are relatively inexpensive and make up nice gifts when returning back home. Food is on average 45 THB for a meal such as Pad Thai, but also many snacks are offered at lower prices. There are also plenty of vendors selling various types of beverages like freshly made juices (30-40 THB) or the popular Bubble Tea (green tea with a shot of fresh milk and grass jelly).
The Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market happens every Saturday regardless of weather. Beware that the national anthem will be played at sharp 18:00 through speakers set up along the road, speaking you’re required to stand still for as long as it’s played; that counts for everyone, visitors and vendors alike.
Tipp: If you’re into fresh hot (and thick) waffles, try them from a husband/wife duo; coming from Chiang Mai Gate, their booth is located about 20 metres into Wualai Road on the right hand side.

Vlog # 80 Part 5
3.12.16
Evening time now and I go out in search of some Thai food.
Tonight its the turn of Ros Nung Restaurant รสหนึ่ง to get a visit.
I have a lovely meal and then its time to move on.
As it is Saturday night this means its Saturday night market night. So I head over for a look around.
The crowds are more than last year and its really busy.
After a look around I stop over at the famous street food stall
Khao Kha Moo Chang Phueak (ข้าวขาหมูช้างเผือก) aka “The lady in the cowboy hat”
When in Chiang Mai this is another stall you HAVE to goto and eat at.
After this great meal I end the day.

VanCity Food Crew: Saturday Wualai Walking Night Market - Chiang Mai, Thailand
Its time for Steve's final video vlog from his first trip to Thailand! Chiang Mai is known for mountain air, elephants, great food, and the giant ass night market on Sundays. Turns out the Saturday one is the same as the Sunday one. Full of shops and many food stalls and no places to sit to eat, the entire market is enormous and takes several hours to traverse.
Prices are approximate: Springrolls 30 baht for 2, smoothie 50 baht, Issan sausage 25 baht, Thai milk tea flavoured Ancient Ice Cream 50 baht, egg pad thai 60 baht, bamboo drink 40 baht, ice cream rolls 125 baht, brownie (not shown) 40 baht
Even though it looks like I had a good time, I barely had 1 of 2 sausages due to the smoothie and only had most of the pad thai. Daniel had most of the ice cream rolls as well.

Amazing STREET FOOD in Chiang Mai's Saturday NIGHT MARKET! Walking Street
Wua Lai Walking Street, the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Mai.
Many people come here for street food as much as the shopping.
One of my favorite things to do in Chiang Mai is to walk around and eat street food through one of the many night markets. There’s a night market for every day of the week.
In this Thai street food tour of Chiang Mai, the plan was just to walk around and see what looked good to eat.
Opening Hours: Sat 17:00 – 23:00 (approximately)
Location: Wualai Road, near the South moat of the old town.

Chiang Mai STREET FOOD - Saturday Night Market
f you’re visiting Chiang Mai, then a visit to the Saturday night walking street market is a must. This is definitely the best market in Chiang Mai. It’s geared more towards locals than tourists, so this is a definite plus for me.
The market takes place on Wulai Street, which is well known for its silver trade. Wulai street runs diagonally away from the old city, just opposite Chiang Mai South Gate, where you will also find the famous open-air food market where both locals and tourists come to eat every night.
Wulai Street market runs from 5-11 pm every Saturday and runs the whole length of the road, which is about 1 km long. The market has a range of arts and crafts, clothes, soaps, and lots of food stalls. The prices are incredibly cheap, so you’ll be sure to find some bargains here.
As well as the usual things you find at street markets, you’ll also find a range of unusual items here. These include crossbows, hammocks, silverware, and Thai herbs.
Wulai Street is also the location of Wat Sri Suphan – the famous Silver Temple. The monks at the temple work at the silver workshops within the grounds, and you can watch them while they work. Twice a week, they also have Monk Chat, where you can sit down and chat with some of the monks.

Eating Thai street food at the Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market Walking Street on Wua Lai Road
Our most recent travel video from Thailand finds us wandering down the ever hectic and bustling Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market Walking Street on Wua Lai Road in search of delicious Thai street food to eat. As with most of our outings, a plan with originally wholesome intentions goes awry awfully fast. Our initial intentions were to just enjoy wandering around the Saturday Night Market people watching and taking photos.

Well, let me tell you, the aromas coming from various Thai street food vendors was enough to steer us off of our path. We first started by sampling deep fried potato chips on a skewer (known in Korea as Tornado chips and in Thailand as twisters). With extra seasonings and attention to detail by our Thai vendor, we had something that tasted like smokey barbecue kettle chips. Naturally we took turns devouring the delicious treat; although, I think I may have had the last bite ;)
After our salty cravings were satisfied Audrey spotted a shaved ice cream parlor. She selected the blueberry topping and immediately proclaimed it tasted like cheesecake; I don't think I was able to wiggle in more than a bit or two on that one ;)
A few minutes later I noticed a Thai lady pan frying dumplings that looked very similar to the ones we enjoyed together in Korean Chinese restaurants (Gun Mandu) as teachers in South Korea. Although they weren't as tasty as the Korean equivalent, they were still decent enough for us to devour the entire tray.
If that wasn't enough I sniffed out a stall selling dim sum and deep fried Thai spring rolls. I don't recall sharing much of these with Audrey ;) While I was devouring two of my favorite snacks, Audrey grabbed a large German sausage which she generous shared a bite with me.
At this point surely we were done and it was time to go home. Well, another fail yet again. How could we resist not having a Thai banana roti pancake saturated in chocolate sauce and sweet condensed milk. It was just one treat after another; actually, more like one cheat after another; however, it was well worth it. Tomorrow, I'll wake up early and go for a swim and gym session to get back on my quest to tame my blogger belly.
Although we deviated from our original plan, we still had the opportunity to people watch, listen to live musical performances, soak in the atmosphere and shoot time-lapse sequences. We're blessed that this market is every Saturday and that we have quite a few more weeks left in Chiang Mai; we'll surely be back again soon:
