Hutongs are reflections of the old Beijing. Narrow alley ways pulse with the rhythm of everyday life. Old walled courtyards fronted by massive red doors are a pleasure to wander through and get lost in . They are all being destroyed by the Chinese government, as are many of Chinas ancient history, and will soon be a thing of the past. There was still a nice selection of them on the north side of Houhai Lakes. The lakes themselves are a peaceful retreat in the middle of this hectic city. Willow tree branches sway in the wind and kiss the water, seniors exercise on machines, practice Thai Chi and fish while Chinese tourists stroll around the lake holding hands and taking pictures.
That night the rains came. Rain brings a different energy to a city. A peacefulness, a calm. Life continues as usual as the street vendors huddle under umbrellas and makeshift tarps shielding their produce, meats, electronics, and gadgets from the rising puddles waiting for the next customer to come, and they do. It was business as usual. Travel allows you to step into people’s lives for just a moment. It is a very voyeuristic way to spend your time. Still this was not the China we came to observe. In fact, it is not China at all that we are here to see. Tomorrow we will board another plane for a four-hour flight west to the autonomous region of Xinjiang.

Cats & Coffee, Mao'er Hutong, Beijing, China
I stumbled upon this little nook while strolling the Mao'er Hutong. It's very low key and not one of the gorgeous places I've seen on TV. But, it's definitely got cats- lots of them. I had a lavender milk tea and sat for a few minutes before my allergies kicked in.

Change in FANGJIA HUTONG, Beijing. From 2017 to 2019.
Beijing's hutongs have seen many changes over the last couple of years, namely due to renovations required by the authorities, leading to the closure of small businesses such as bars and eateries.
Fangjia Hutong 方家胡同, once well-known for its numerous places to eat and drink had such enforced renovations in 2017, brickening up of doors and windows that didn't conform, resulting in the closure of most of the businesses in the hutong.
This video gives a before and after view of Fangjia Hutong, contrasting just before the 2017 brickening, to a couple of months after, and then to how it is in 2019.

Natooke | Black Buddha (Beijing)
Fixies First
Think “fixies” and your mind likely wanders to pedaling the streets of Brooklyn, the hills of Portland, or alongside a Dutch canal. Now that Natooke is a name in our address book, fixies will forever be synonymous with biking the back alleys of Beijing.
Opened by famed German cyclist Ines Brunn back in 2009, the shop’s whole ethos is inspiring healthy living and a greener take on urban commuting. It also wants you to adopt that ethos in a way that works for you. Natooke allows you to fully customize and outfit your ideal city ride, and builds the bike for you according to all your specs. The shop is also located in the up-and-coming Wudaoying Hutong which gives it some major street cred. And if you’re traveling to Sichuan province, Natooke just opened a sister shop in Chengdu.
The Beijing custom bike shop is a cycling institution in the Capital city, and was the first fixie shop in the country. Its reputation far precedes it. Natooke had such an impact on the bike culture here, that the shop’s former secret fixie meet ups and rallies garnered too much attention from the authorities and were forced to disband.
Word from the wise, the shop also sells items you can’t find anywhere else, like Respro anti-pollution masks. Trust us, in Beijing, you’ll need ‘em.
