Three Japan-born Pandas Return to China
Three giant pandas, born and raised in Japan, were transferred to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China’s Sichuan Province Tuesday morning.
The pandas, named Hai Bang, Yang Bang and You Bang, arrived at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport Monday night.
As soon as the pandas got off the aircraft, they were sent to customs supervision zone for some necessary registration, and breeders from the research base made a preliminary health check on the pandas.
The three pandas are in stable condition. They stayed calm as we expected, which also relieves our breeders. What got us worried most was that the pandas would probably appear stressed after being transported. We were afraid that the pandas were thrown into manic and unstable condition, said Zhang Hao, breeder from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
Zhang further noted that all three pandas are now breathing normally and are in stable condition.
After registration, the pandas were allowed to leave the airport. However, they will undergo a month-long quarantine and orientation period before making public appearance.
Among the three pandas, Hai Bang and Yang Bang are male-female twins, which were born on Aug 11, 2010, while their younger sister You Bang was born on Aug 10, 2012. They were earlier living in Adventure World located in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture.
In 1994, the Chengdu base and the Japanese park started a panda breeding research program. Over the years, 15 pandas have been bred. Hai Bang, Yang Bang and You Bang are the ninth, tenth and eleventh giant pandas that left Japan for China.
Cubs born to pandas that are on loan from China must be returned to China after they reach sexual maturity or when the cooperative agreement ends.

Wild Giant Panda Twins Spotted in China’s Wolong Nature Reserve
Two wild giant pandas were spotted by infrared camera in the Wolong Nature Reserve of southwest China's Sichuan Province recently.
Staffs of the reserve center found the videos on October 28 when checking the monitor’s data. The two video clips were filmed on October 21, totaling 40 seconds.
In the video, two wild giant pandas were playing together in forests and then walked away.
Experts say the two might be twins growing up together. For wild giant pandas, they usually live alone after getting two years old. They only stay with companions during the mating seaon.
The Wolong Nature Reserve has sent experts to collect the two pandas’ DNA information to confirm their speculation.
Sichuan has eight giant panda protection zones and Wolong is the biggest of them all.

Giant panda released into wild: Two-year-old Zhang Xiang released in Ya'an
A captive-bred giant panda named Zhang Xiang is just beginning a new life in the wild. Her new home is a Nature reserve in Yaan city in Southwest China's Sichuan province. Staff members have been wearing specially-made panda suits to interact with giant panda Zhang Xiang before she was released into the wild. The special giant panda suits are essential to create an illusion for Zhang Xiang to accept the approaching staff as adult giant pandas. Zhang Xiang has been trained to build a den and mark her territory. The cub also developed skills such as recognizing potential enemies, hunting for food and climbing trees. She also wears a necklace with Global Positioning System. It will help staff to monitor and assess the giant panda's living conditions.

Atlanta Says Bye-bye to Twin Pandas
The two twin pandas who have entertained crowds for years at Zoo Atlanta started a long journey to their homeland China Thursday.
As part of an exchange agreement with China, three-year-old Meilun and Meihuan will be sent back to the Giant Panda Research Base in Chengdu City of Southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Over the past three years, Meilun and Meihuan, the first surviving twin pandas born in captivity in the United States, have been the star attraction at Zoo Atlanta.
It is just really cool to see twin pandas because you just don't get to see them that often. I saw in the newspaper saying they are leaving, I was like I have to come see them for the last time, said zoo visit Kate Woo.
Zoo Atlanta's mammal curator Stephanie Braccini, who has watched the twin grow into fun-loving, entertaining sisters, said she got emotional just thinking about their leaving, but she also believes that going back is good for the pandas.
We are happy to know that they are going. They will add to the genetic diversity of the population. And potentially, their offspring, or their offspring's offspring could be released into the wild, said Braccini.
They are ambassadors for their wild counterparts, ambassadors for an entire nation, an entire culture. I see people embrace the fluffy animal and then go that extra step further to learn about the culture, the tradition, and what giant pandas mean in China, she added.
The trip to China will take about 50 hours. They will fly cargo in separate crates along with a Zoo Atlanta curator and 175 kilograms of bamboo and assorted treats to keep them happy.
Zoo Atlanta is one of the four zoos in the United States that have panda exchange programs with China. Another set of twins, still unnamed, were born here two months ago and will soon make their public appearance.
