China's Extraordinary Hotels: From Relic to Resort -- Kunming | Megan Zhang
Decades ago, the stone walls and carved wooden doors of this hotel in southern China's Kunming housed a bank. The suites used to be offices, the hotel library was a security vault where customers stowed their valuables. Now, guests sip leisurely afternoon tea in the building’s historic halls. Time stands still and it’s easy to forget what decade you're in...but right outside, the metropolitan of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, bustles onward. It's an unlikely treasure hidden in plain sight — so hidden that you could walk past the entrance without realizing it's there!
The first episode of Travelogue’s new 3-part series “China’s Extraordinary Hotels” is all about hotel stays that transport us back in time! This is an excerpt from the episode.

World's Longest Sightseeing Escalator, Hubei Province, Central China
A 688-meter-long sightseeing escalator made its debut during the past week-long National Day holiday, contributing to tourists' visits at Enshi Grand Canyon in Enshi city, Central China's Hubei province.
The escalator is the world's longest sightseeing one, costing each visitor 20 yuan ($2.98), said an insider, who went on saying that visitors can enjoy the beautiful sights by taking less time and effort thanks to the escalator.
Using a steel concrete structure and a wooden structure, the escalator was built along the mountain in a ∑ shape at Qixingzhai scenic spot, a must-see at Enshi Grand Canyon.
The whole engineering plan focused on ecological protection, which can be seen from the wooden structure and grey tile at the top of the escalator, said Xiong Yan, who is in charge of the project and works at Central-South Architectural Design Institute.
Xiong said that many vine plants were planted along the escalator to integrate with the surrounding landscape.
It's reported that the escalator can carry 7,300 visitors per hour in theory and is estimated to carry 600,000 visitors altogether in one year.

White Emperor City
White Emperor City is located at the northern bank of the Yangtze River in Fengjie City. It is said that a general called Gongsun Shu set up a regime in Sichuan. One day, he came here and saw white fog rising from a well in the city, which looks like a white dragon. Thus, he named himself White Emperor and the city, White Emperor City. In 36 A.D., Gongsun Shu was defeated by Liu Xiu, the founder of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The locals built the White Emperor Temple in the city to commemorate Gongsun Shu
In the Three Kingdoms Period, Liu Bei, the king of the Shu, was defeated by the Wu kingdom and fell back to the White Emperor City. He was badly ill and entrusted his son to his prime minister, Zhuge Liang.
In the Ming Dynasty, the statue of Gongsun Shu in the White Emperor Temple was replaced by the statues of Liu Bei and his two sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. Since then, this temple has become a place to commemorate Liu Bei, Guanyu and Zhang Fei. However, the temple's name has remained till now.
