Villages in Dali: Deep in the mountains
After heading north for more than two hours on a bumpy mountain road from Dali city, I finally arrived at Changtou village, home to nearly 130 families of the Bai ethnic group.
Upon my arrival, villagers were gathering in front of an old stage to see a performance; many of the women were wearing identical hats. A villager told me it's the symbol for married women in the Bai culture, meaning,I'm not available.
Located in the central part of western Yunnan province, Dali is the only autonomous prefecture in China that the Bai ethnic group calls home. As many of the villages were built on the flatlands amid the mountains, people don't have much connection with the outside world; they live a simple and traditional life.
The Bai people love traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. They paint on the walls outside of their houses as decoration, and write Chinese characters in brush calligraphy representing the family name of the inhabitants.
They also have very devout beliefs, not in some specific religion, but in the local god. People in different villages worship different gods, whether it's a hero, a figure from a legend, or even an enemy.
When the villagers noticed me taking photos of them, they became so cooperative that some even kept motionless for almost an entire minute. But there are also the shy ones, who were completely helpless facing my lens.

China vlog#17: Yunnan Minority Village (Kunming)
After spending a whole day at the minority village, we still weren't able to cover half the park! But what we did see was an incredible contrast of culture to that which we know!
Ps. Food can be expensive at the park compared to food prices in town, so come strapped with cash :P

LIJIANG, CHINA: LIVING IN CHINA'S FORGOTTEN KINGDOM
This short documentary was shot in one of our favorite corners of China’s Yunnan Province.
Lijiang is the name of a famous tourist city, but it is also the name of the prefecture surrounding it. The region is known for stunning mountain vistas, thriving indigenous cultures and some of the most pristine wilderness areas in the entire country.
We interviewed seven expats who were captivated by this part of China and started new lives in Lijiang Prefecture. We asked them what makes the place so special to them and how living there has affected their lives. Their answers are as varied as the places they live.
Check out our short documentary on living in Lijiang, a place Russian adventurer and author Peter Goullart once described as China’s ‘Forgotten Kingdom’.

Linden Centre Wuxi Preview
After four years of developing a new sustainable travel paradigm in China's rural southwest, the Linden Centre has agreed to adapt this model and assist the Wuxi government in restoring two former silk trading enclaves in the urban wetlands along Lake Tai. The Linden Centre was targeted for this project and, after extended discussions and planning sessions both in Wuxi and Yunnan, has finalized a relationship that will allow it to implement a culturally-focused and environmentally-considerate retreat only 45 minutes by train from Shanghai.

Travel China Yunnan Dali - Bai Temple Music Festival - Part 5
Wondering the narrow alleyways of Erhai lakeshore villages near Dali in Yunnan Province of southwestern China one can get lucky and stumble upon a genuine Bai village temple fest. Tourists who prefer to keep to Dali guidebooks most recommended sites seldom visit the smallest of these villages. Yet it is here at a typical village temple that a village folk gathering can be found worshiping. There are no guests, no outside visitors and the immensely enjoyable spectacle usually lasts all day. The participants, including the orchestra members are the villagers themselves. All of them take part; they are who live in the small village, sharing in the worship and the eventual feast. Both men and women participate, the women first in their own temple, and then together with men they light the auspicious incense in the main temple. After worship the participants gather to enjoy some of the foods the women cooked and offered as temple offerings to the gods pig head, rooster, bowl of spicy fish, plates of colored noodles, cups of rice, fruits, chilly and vegetables, all staple parts of their diet. This gathering and communal temple worship and meal was preceded by five days of abstinence from eating meat. The music and chants are mesmerizing, downright hypnotic. All villagers sport smiles and deep-rooted joy in participating. Their simple, authentic local celebration exudes in genuine display of friendship toward one another.
