Great Local Market Xizhou Town in Dali, Yunnan, China
Most people in Xizhou, the town on the opposite side of Lake Erhai. People interested in local food culture. The range of food reachep from every green leaf vegetable, bananas as for as fish, meet, sauce and spices
Dali Wase Xizhou, China
Video with images of Dali, Wase and Xizhou three townships in southwestern Yunnan province of China. The main inhabitants of the region are people of the Bai minority. In the third century BC they found a passage to Burma and India. The first emperor of China brought the area under his authority. The trade routes already in existence became part of a larger network throughout the empire. In the middle of the seventh century the people in the region established their own powerful kingdom Nanzhao. Initially this kingdom allied with the Chinese empire against the Tibetans. But in the early eighth century this kingdom defeated the Tang imperial army. Since then it was a prosperous and independent kingdom which controlled the trade routes from China to India and Burma. In the tenth century a local leader dispelled the king of Nanzhao. He founded his own kingdom in Dali. In the middle of the thirteenth century the Mongol emperors submitted this new kingdom and made it part of their empire. Nevertheless the south west remained an isolated frontier region and a refuge for political opponents to the imperial regime.
Dali was built in the middle of the eighth century by the king of Nanzhao. The town is situated on a small plateau enclosed by a lake and a mountain range. All around the old town is a rectangular wall. The former southern gate is now part of the town centre due to later architectural expansion. In the south a new town wall has been constructed. The main road runs from north to south. It is a wide lane with trees on both sides. The main road has water tunnels on both sides. The back wall of the houses is made of granite while the front has windows and doors made of wood. The doors and posts are decorated with elaborate wood carvings. Most houses have two floors, the upper floor is used for storage. On the roof of the house are tiles.
At the other side of the lake is Wase a village with a market every week for fish and fruit. The fruit comes from orchards on the dry eastern shore of the lake. Merchants also sell fire wood, marble and granite from the mountain ranges along the western shore of the lake. They bring these products to Wase by boat. Both trade and transport are in the hands of the Bai. Many people in the village wear local Bai dress. Women generally wear light coloured shirts, sleeveless jackets of red, blue or black color, embroidered belts, loose trousers and embroidered shoes of cloth.
North of Dali is the old village of Xizhou with a market each day of the week. At the market people buy food like fish, meat, vegetables and cereals. They also buy local made goods like batik shirts and shoes with embroidery. In Xizhou the original Bai architecture has been well preserved and some tea houses still have a traditional appearance. Some Bai women in local dress still gather in front of one of these tea houses when they return from the market.

Dali Erhai Lake Bai Temple Festival - Yunnan Music Part 3, China Travel
Wondering the narrow alleyways of Erhai lakeshore villages near Dali in Yunnan Province of southwestern China one can get lucky and stumble upon a genuine Bai village temple fest. Tourists who prefer to keep to Dali guidebooks most recommended sites seldom visit the smallest of these villages. Yet it is here at a typical village temple that a village folk gathering can be found worshiping. There are no guests, no outside visitors and the immensely enjoyable spectacle usually lasts all day. The participants, including the orchestra members are the villagers themselves. All of them take part; they are who live in the small village, sharing in the worship and the eventual feast. Both men and women participate, the women first in their own temple, and then together with men they light the auspicious incense in the main temple. After worship the participants gather to enjoy some of the foods the women cooked and offered as temple offerings to the gods pig head, rooster, bowl of spicy fish, plates of colored noodles, cups of rice, fruits, chilly and vegetables, all staple parts of their diet. This gathering and communal temple worship and meal was preceded by five days of abstinence from eating meat. The music and chants are mesmerizing, downright hypnotic. All villagers sport smiles and deep-rooted joy in participating. Their simple, authentic local celebration exudes in genuine display of friendship toward one another.

Mirling Abroad in Dali, China - Yunnan Province Series PART 1
Yunnan Province is without a doubt our favourite part of China that we visit on our trip. The scenery is spectacular, the people are diverse, warm, and friendly, and the food is the most delicious we've had in the country. Can't say enough about Yunnan Province.
Check out the highlights of our 2 weeks in Yunnan in this three-part series. Part 1 begins in the ancient city of Dali. We were blown away by the chilled-out, hippie vibe here; four days is not enough.

Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour (it’s not sponsored), but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
Luxi who was our guide also has a cooking school called Rice and Friends ( - we’ll visit her cooking school on Day 3 of this series.
Ok, now onto the info about this Chinese street food tour in Yunnan:
Xizhou, China
On Day 1, we drove from Dali Old Town to Xizhou, another ancient town near Dali, that’s known for some famous Chinese street food snacks.
We started for breakfast with a thick pea porridge and a pea pudding salad. The grandmother serving had been making these same dishes since she was a child with her mother. The breakfast was warming and delicious, and it hit the spot in the morning.
Total price - 8 RMB ($1.20)
Xizhou Baba - Probably the most famous Chinese street food you have to try in Xizhou is baba, which is also sometimes known as a Chinese pizza. It’s a round of dough that’s mixed with lard and meat, or the sweet version, and baked in a unique street oven using charcoal. Part of the fun is watching it being made. Then of course, eating it is absolutely delicious.
Price - 10 RMB ($1.50) per piece
Yunnanese cheese - Next up in Xizhou we went to watch a local Yunnanese Cheese demonstration. Yunnan is one of the few places in China where there is a cheese culture - some say it was brought over with the Mongols. We made some local cheese, then put it out to dry, then they let us sample some different types of the prepared cheese. Price - 8 RMB ($1.20)
Yi He Zhuang (怡和庄) Restaurant - This Yunnanese ethnic Bai Chinese food meal was the highlight of my day. We had an absolute feast of a meal, including a few unique Chinese dishes like raw pig sashimi and pine needle salad. Everything was colorful, using natural ingredients and the flavors were spectacular. This meal is one I’ll never forget.
Total price - 215 RMB ($32.41)
Dali Old Town - It was a long day of delicious Chinese food, and in the evening we drove back to Dali Old Town and headed out for dinner.
Duan’s Kitchen - For dinner we were back in Old Town Dali, and my friend Frank from Zouba Tours mentioned that Duan’s Kitchen was a little touristy, but he said we needed to try it because the food was amazing and they are doing some unique things. The food was outstanding, and my favorite dish was the chicken braised in chili oil with pu’er tea.
Total price - 180 RMB ($27.14)

The Guanyin Tang temple (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) Guanyin Temple (Guanyintang in Chinese) is located in the south of Old Town of Dali, about 10 minutes' drive. Popularly enshrined and worshipped in Dali area, Guanyin has been regarded as a Patron God or Goddess of Bai minority. Buddhism in Dali could be taken as Yunnan Esoteric or Dian Mi, in which Guanyin is much more important than Buddha; experts referred to the Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) there as Arcarya Guanyin (A Cuo Ye in Chinese) who is much slimmer than those elsewhere. It's even said that Pi Luoge, the founder of the Nanzhao Kingdom, had been nominated by Guanyin as the governor of the Six Tribes at that time. Among Buddhist temples in Dali, Guanyin temples or shrines are the majority, and Guanyin Tang or Guanyin Temple is the most famous one.
