Eastern Paradise of Yakushi Nyorai Joruri ji Temple
Joruriji Temple was founded by priest Gimyo. This is a Shingon Ritsu sect temple with icons of Amida-Nyorai and Yakushi-Nyorai. According to temple records, it was first founded in 1047 as Nishi Odawaraji Temple, and was designed to express the pure land Jodo that all nobles longed to be guided to in their afterlives. A Jodo-style garden is located around the pond, where beautiful views of flowers throughout the year can be seen as well as colored leaves in autumn. Most temple buildings were destroyed during the period of the northern and southern dynasties (1336-1392), but the main hall (built in 1107) and three-storied pagoda survived, designated as national treasures. The main hall holds nine seated wooden images of the Amida-nyorai-zazo Buddha (national treasure), giving the temple a second name Kutaiji (Temple of the Nine Images). Its bewitching secret statue, Kissho-ten image, which is believed to have been made in the 13th century and designated as an important cultural asset of Japan, is opened to the public only in January, spring, and autumn each year. The three-tiered pagoda rising above a dense forest as if piercing the sky, and the elegant scenery of Aji-ike Pond reflecting off the main hall, provide people of the modern age with a look at Fujiwara Culture.
The pond was dug in 1150 by priests from Kōfuku-ji. On either side of the pond are stone lanterns dating to 1366, which are classified as Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government. Beginning in 1976 the garden was restored to its original form by the landscape architect Mori Osamu.
The garden of Joruri-ji, located in the town of Kamo near the ancient capital of Nara, is a Pure Land garden (jodoshiki) intended to evoke the Western Paradise of Amida Buddha. As a religious foundation, it dates back to the eleventh century, but the main hall is an early twelfth-century structure, and was moved to its present location in 1157 (its original location is unknown). It was at that time that the pond garden located to the east of the hall was constructed by a priest of nearby Kofuku-ji. Two decades later, a pagoda originally erected in Kyoto was moved to the steep hillside on the eastern shore of the pond. As reconstructed on the evidence of archaeological discoveries made in 1976, the pond contains an elongated island connected to the southern shore by a long stone bridge, and a prominent peninsula on the eastern shore. When it was excavated in 1976, the island and the peninsula were found to have pebbled shores, and the North end of the island contained a group of carefully placed rocks culminating in a tall standing stone that today seems to echo the pagoda on the eastern bank. Unfortunately the island and the shores of the pond have been overcome by tall grasses and weeds in the quarter century following the restoration of the site, this growth concealing much of the stone work.
The orientation of the hall and garden--orientation in the literal sense of the term--is explained by the fact that this is an Amida temple. Thus the main hall, famous for its nine statues of the Amida Buddha, represents the Western Paradise, or Pure Land, of Amida Buddhism, and is appropriately located on the western side of the pond. The combination of an Amida Hall and a pond garden is a rare extant example of an arrangement that was apparently commonplace in the Heian Period (the Byodo-in at Uji is the only other extant example dating in the twelfth century). It is worth noting that as the sun sets behind the ridge located to the west of the main hall, casting the temple and the pond garden into shadow, the elevated pagoda remains dramatically illuminated, suggesting to some, the Eastern Paradise of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing. Joruri is the Japanese name for the Eastern Paradise, and the original dedication of the temple was to Yakushi, whose image is stored in the pagoda. This east-west emphasis has led some to see the island in the middle of the pond as representing the terrestrial world bracketed by two heavens.

Yakushiji temple in Nara city - Taste of 8th Century - Japan Trip
Yakushiji temple is located a bit off in the distance from Todaiji temple, which is the most popular spot in Nara. So you'll see much less tourists here.
The history of the temple is quite old, but you can enjoy the real brilliance of Buddhist architectures in the 8th century because most of the buildings were reconstructed in the late 20th century in accordance with their original buildings.
Besides, some Buddhist statues of this temple are said to be masterpieces of Buddhist statues of the 7th to 8th century. They are definitely must-sees.
Why don't you pick this temple as one of the destinations of your trip in Japan?
Thank you.

Yakushiji was built by Emperor Tenmu in the late 7th century praying for the recovery of the emperor's wife who had been sick. Being one of Japan's oldest temples, the layout of Yakushiji is strictly symmetric, with the main hall and lecture hall standing on a central axis, flanked by two pagodas.
The main hall was reconstructed in the 1970s after being destroyed by fire, and houses a Yakushi trinity, a masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist art. The East Pagoda has survived the many fires and dates from 730, the temple's only extant structure. It appears to have six stories, but is actually three storied, like the West Pagoda.
The Genjo-sanzoin Garan is located slightly north of the main complex area., which is a recently built complex. It was constructed in 1981, and is dedicated to the 7th century Chinese monk Genjo-sanzo., who is famous for his extensive travels to India and Central Asia. Yakushiji is the head temple of the Hosso Sect of Japanese Buddhism. Genjo-sanzo's teachings had a profound influence upon the Hosso Sect.
The main building at Genjo-sanzoin Garan is a central octagonal hall, where there are some of Genjo-sanzo's remains enshrined. Behind the octagonal hall, there is a building that displays works of Hirayama Ikuo, one of Japan's most celebrated painters who passed away in 2009. Hirayama's works were greatly inspired by Genjo-sanzo's journeys, the scenes of which was often depicted in his works. The complex is closed about half the time.

Yakushiji Temple, Nara - 薬師寺●奈良 - Japan As It Truly Is
Yakushiji is one of Nara's finest temples and one of Japan's best, completed around 698 AD. Sadly it's often overlooked by many.
Yakushiji in Nara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It was built by Emperor Tenmu as a place to pray for his sick consort, but he died before its was finished. Yakushiji has been moved twice, and has been in its present location since 718 AD, just after Nara became Japan's new capital. Part of Yakushiji is under renovation, to be completed in 2018.
Yakushiji is a short walk from the Kintetsu Nishinokyo Station, and often visited along with the Toshodaiji Temple

Japan Travel: Shin-Yakushiji Temple Nara35
Shin-Yakushiji Temple was established during the Nara Period (710-794) by an empress to pray for recovery of the ailing emperor. It is devoted to Yakushi Buddha, the patron of medicine in Japanese Buddhism. Shin-Yakushiji means New Yakushi Temple, because there had already existed a Yakushiji Temple. During its heyday, Shin-Yakushiji once consisted of a large complex of buildings, but it suffered from fire damage and only one building, the present main hall or Hon-do has survived from the 8th century.
Inside the main hall, 12 life size statues of guardian deities stands surrounding a two meter tall statue of a seated Yakushi Buddha, which are the temple's main objects of worship. The Yakushi statue is a wooden statue while the guardians are made of clay. Each guardian has a different character and possesses a different weapon. Visitors will never be bored while admiring them. There are also a few small paths around the temple grounds so that visitors can stroll around.

Yakushiji Temple
Yakushiji Temple was erected by Emperor Tenmu, who prayed for the Empress (who later becomes Empress Jitou) to recover from her disease, and has a long history of 1300 years.
And as its name suggests, the principal image is Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru, the Buddha of healing and medicine). Side-by-side with Nikko Bosatsu (Suryaprabha), and Gakko Bosatsu (Candraprabha), this Buddha triad is famous for being the most beautiful statues of Buddha in the world, making feel like being enveloped by their beautiful smile.

Gansen-ji temple in Kamocho!
Gansen-ji is a temple located about 1.2 km northeast of Joruri-ji, located in a small valley which opens to the North. Though the location of the temple is rather rural and not easily accessible, it holds many Important Cultural Assets, some dating to the early Heian Period. The temple's early history is murky at best, but Gansen-ji has many interesting traditions considering its origins and development which coalesced during the Edo period during a stretch of restoration and revival.
According to temple history, Gansen-ji was founded in 729 when Emperor Shomu made the Furosan Shrine in Izumo Province. Because of a dream, he requested Gyogi Bosatsu to erect an Amida hall, which later became a baptismal hall. In 806, Chisen Daishi reconstructed Gansen-ji as Hoon-in. After an imperial heir was born to Emperor Saga after Chisen Daishi prayed for that specifically, as thanks, the Empress had a pagoda erected in 812, and the whole complex was named Gansen-ji.
The spectacle of a three-tiered pagoda, rising amidst lush greenery, and the main hall, produce the feeling of a mountain temple. At the entrance of the temple gate is a boat-shaped rock, giving the temple its name, which priests are said to have used when washing themselves. This temple is in the mountainous area of Kamocho, Kizugawa City in Kyoto prefecture!
Flowers of all four seasons bloom in the precincts. The hydrangeas in June are beautiful. This area has many Buddhist images carved in stone on rock walls. Looking at the three laughing Amida images carved on one rock wall (from the Kamakura Period) is said to cheer people's spirits.
Gyogi (668-749) Monk of the Hosso sect of Buddhism (Ch Faxiang or Fa-hsiang).Also known as Gyoki. Born in Kawatchi Province (now part of Osaka Prefecture), he studied Hosso teachings at the temple Yakushi-ji. He devoted himself to the building of the temples, particularly the temple Todai-ji. He also undertook numerous social welfare projects, such as dam and bridge building.During his later years, the emperor Shomu bestowed on him the name Daibosatu (Great Bodhisattva) and raised him to the rank of Daisojo (great bishop or primate). Because of his outstanding virtue, he was often known as Gyogi Bosatsu (Bohisattva Gyogi) and was popularly taken to be a manifestation of Manjusri Bodhisattva. He was long remembered as an ascetic with great charisma, and many temples are attributed to him. (JAPAN an Illustrated Encyclopedia by Kodansha)
