No.01 Yamadera(山寺)
Yama-dera is about a twenty minute train ride northeast of Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. The temple is a nationally-designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site.
Yama-dera is where the well-known haiku poet Matsuo Bashō wrote his famous haiku ah this silence / sinking into the rocks / voice of cicada in 1689. In 1996 the Ministry of the Environment selected the cicadas of Yama-dera as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.

【English】All About Hiraizumi#31 Pilgrimage to Four Temples – Part 1
Broadcasted on November 12th, 2014
We will introduce you ‘Pilgrimage to Four Temples – the journey to visit ancient temples in Michinoku’. The great priest Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) founded the four temples in Heian Era and renowned haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited them in his journey called ‘the Narrow Road to the Deep North’ in Edo Era.
Chuson-ji
Shunwa Yamada, Chief Abbot
The four temples consist of Chuson-ji, Motsu-ji, Zuigan-ji in Matsushima and Rissyaku-ji, a mountain temple in Yamagata. Four temples have been cooperating to welcome the worshippers under the name of ‘Pilgrimage to Four Temples’. We believe that the worshippers will gain many blessings by visiting the temples one by one, taking enough time, and thinking of the olden days respectfully
You can start ‘Pilgrimage to Four Temples’ with any temples and can take any order.
Please purchase a Goshuin-cho (a notebook to stamp red seals on when visiting sacred places) at the first temple you visit and travel on your own pace.
Zuigan-ji in Miyagi Prefecture is the most historic temple among the four.
It is also famous as the family temple of Date clan.
Zuigan-ji
Mr.Youichi Chiba
Although the temples are located in different prefectures, Miyagi, Iwate and Yamagata and their sects vary, the four temples have been collaborating in ‘Pilgrimage to Four Temple’. By all means, I would like everyone to visit the temples and think nostalgically upon the history such as Jikaku Daishi and Matsuo Basho.
There is a plum tree named ‘Garyubai’ in Zuigan-ji.
All the red seals for ‘Pilgrimage to Four Temples’ are made with Garyubai and very prestigious.
We received two red seals on this day.
Part 2 of ‘Pilgrimage to Four Temples’ will feature Rissyaku-ji in Yamagata and Motsu-ji in Hiraizumi.

【English】All About Hiraizumi#32 Pilgrimage to Four Temples - Part 2
Broadcasted on November 19th, 2014
In part 1 of Pilgrimage to Four Temples, the journey to four temples in Tohoku, we visited Chuson-ji in Hiraizumi and Zuigan-ji in Miyagi and received two goshuin (red seals).
Approximately 100km by car from Zuigan-ji.
Rissyaku-ji in Yamagata Prefecture is said to be associated to Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) the most among the four temples.
Rissyaku-ji,
Seiden Kiyohara, Chief Priest
There is a legend that the remains of Jikaku Daishi were buried in this temple. There actually exists a cave called ‘nyujokutsu’ where his bones were laid. Another legend is that Jikaku Daishi transferred the eternal ritual fires there from Enryakuji Temple. Rissyaku-ji is believed to be deeply associated to Jikaku Daishi the most among all the temples of Tendai sect.
One of the attractive features of Rissyaku-ji is that it has a view of scenery only those who climbed the steps can see.
Legend of Motsu-ji has it that Jikaku Daishi built a hall after being led there by a white deer. Along with Chuson-ji, it was the basis of the prosperity of Hiraizumi.
Motsu-ji
Myokyu Fujisato, Chief Steward
As you are aware, Pilgrimage to Four Temples was initiated based on the fact that all four temples were founded by Jikaku Daishi and visited by Matsuo Basho. I believe there are both types of trips, one with a purpose and the other without it. With Pilgrimage to Four Temples, travelers can follow the footsteps of Basho and feel the history of the temples built by a priest called Jikaku Daishi. I would like everyone to visit the four temples in Tohoku by all means.
Four temples were founded by Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) in the distant past and each has gone through long history. Why not try the pilgrimage to feel the temples’ deep history?

Mr. YAMADERA Jun was fascinated by the infinite possibility of the Internet from its early period. He started an IT venture company in his hometown, Aizu in Fukushima. He had innovated various things with his mission of creating a magical digital culture since the year of Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. 16 years later, in 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake struck his hometown and brought unprecedented damage there. Even now, Fukushima has tremendous unsolved problems, and at the same time it is considered that Fukushima has the world urgent problems that must be settled immediately. Mr. Yamadera, who is always in search of cutting-edge technology, is now challenging to solve this serious situation more quickly than anyone else. His magical technology will give a new value even to bicycles which are very familiar to us, and will let them shine.

【English】All about Hiraizumi #64 Autumn colours of Hiraizumi
This was filmed in early November.
Hiraizumi has some of the best places to view autumn leaves in Iwate. Each site is different from the others.
At Chuson-ji, Autumn colours overhang the main approach. The maple leaves glow as if translucent when lit by sunlight. In particular, the approach from the Main Hall to Konjikido is breathtakingly beautiful and many visitors pause to admire the leaves.
Motsu-ji is called 'the temple of flowers' and the Autumn leaves that colour the Pure Land Garden look like flowers. The Oizumigaike Pond reflects the bright leaves and creates a fantastic atmosphere. The vermilion maples beside the Yarimizu (Feeder Stream) remind you of the red umbrellas of the Gokusui no En.
The Autumn colours at Takkoku no Iwaya present a different scene with the trees standing close beside the sheer cliff. Golden-leaved gingko grows by the Ganmen Daibutsu (Rock-carved Buddha) and red maple by the Bishamon Hall. A special scene of history and nature is created, only seen in this season. In the Hakusan-ike Pond a carp looked as though it were swimming among the Autumn leaves.
Being able to enjoy different scenes in different seasons is one of the joys of Hiraizumi.
