YAMAGUCHI PREFECTURE - MINE CITY AND YAMAGUCHI CITY
This time we went to Yamaguchi Prefecture, next to Fukuoka Prefecture. The access is pretty easy. You can go there by car from Kitakyushu Airport in one hour by, and Shimonoseki Port in 45 minutes.
Mine City has a rich nature and is a famous tourist destination. Akiyoshido, a limestone cave which is older than 300 million years can be seen. Furthermore, once a year the so-called fire-walking festival is held in Yamaguchi City. Participants walk with their bare feet over the fire for the safety of their homes and a prosperity business year. Another interesting place is the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM). Here you can find new technology and gadgets to ease everyday life. By all means, please visit Yamaguchi.

Sunday Service: Rena Anakwe presents….
Sharon De La Cruz, Johann Diedrick, Delphine Fawundu, GENG, Pamela Liou
Sunday, April 8th, 2018 | 7:00pm
In order to rise
From its own ashes
A phoenix
First
Must
Burn.
EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING (Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower”, chapter 14)
Interested in the ways in which people manifest their healing, the above quote speaks of an event of destruction that must first occur before healing and resilience begins in our own lives. We all have our own life experiences, ancestral and present, that form our current healing practices in all forms.
This Sunday Service offers a glimpse into the ways that five artists evoke their own healing and discovery through various forms of media, storytelling and ritual.
About the Artists
Sharon Lee De La Cruz is an artist and activist from New York City. She earned a BFA from The Cooper Union, is a Fulbright scholar, and obtained her Masters at NYU’s ITP program (Interactive Telecommunications Program). Sharon’s work ranges from comics, to STEM education, to interactive sculptures. She works at the intersection of tech, art, and social justice. She currently lives in New Jersey and is the Assistant Director of The StudioLab, a creative tech lab, at Princeton University.
Johann Diedrick makes installations, performances, and objects that let people play with sound. He shares his work through workshops, listening tours, and open-source software and hardware. He is a recipient of the Asian Cultural Council Fellows grant and has been featured in Wire Magazine and Musicworks Magazine. He has exhibited internationally, including the Soundscapes symposium at Yale University, the NIME conference in Daejeon and Seoul, Korea, and the Invisible Places conference in Viseu, Portugal. He studied at the ITP program at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU focusing on sound art. He was a researcher at the InterLab at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) in Yamaguchi, Japan and worked as an interactive software developer at Qosmo in Tokyo, Japan. He is currently a senior developer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Adama Delphine Fawundu is photo-based visual artist and activist born in Brooklyn, NY. She is the founder and author of the book MFON: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora. Ms. Fawundu is a New York Foundation of the Arts Photography Fellow. Her multimedia fine art work uses photography, video and sculpture to interrogate identity with the African African Diaspora. Since 2008 she’s been documenting the urban music scene in several African cities including Nairobi, Lagos, Freetown, Accra, Bamako, Johannesburg, and Dakar. As an activist, Ms. Fawundu has used art a vehicle to mobilize her community to fight against gentrification through her project, “Tivoli: A Place We Call Home: A Community Faces Gentrification.”
Geng is a New York City-borne and currently-residing sound artist and founder of PTP (formerly, Purple Tape Pedigree), a collective, plus imprint, acting as “purveyors of weaponized media.” With roots in the city’s underground hip hop and then experimental electronic/metal/punk communities since the mid-90’s, his sonic narrative typically spills forth a cocktail of these influences, with a focus on meditative confrontation of traumatic histories, sleep paralysis, aquaphobia, and the communication bridge between self-actualized identity and spirit. In a live setting, one may be challenged by disembodied vocals piercing through a collage of field recordings, ASMR tape loops, and walls of distorted dread from various hardware.
Pamela Liou is an artist and technologist living in Brooklyn, NY. Her work examines tensions between craft, emerging platforms, and pursuit of self-actualization. Through digitally fabricated machines, analog video, and virtual environments Pamela’s work offers alternative modalities for recoupling and reacquainting the individual with a sense of creative efficacy.
About the Curator
Rena Anakwe is an interdisciplinary artist and performer, working primarily with sound, visuals, and scent. Exploring intersections between traditional healing practices, spirituality and performance she creates works focused on sensory-based, experiential interactions using technology. A member of the artistic collective NON Worldwide, she is based in Brooklyn, New York by way of Nigeria and Canada.
About Sunday Service
Taking place the first Sunday of each month, a guest curator is invited to organize a salon style evening of cross-disciplinary performances and presentations that brings together a multiplicity of views around a singular prompt, such as a question, theme, or formal structure. Sunday Service centers works in progress, interdisciplinary endeavors, and diversity in format showcased in a lo-fi environment to foster the testing of ideas and critical discourse amongst peers.

“I’m Humanity”
All the happiness there was
All the lovers we swore love with
How did all this happen?
I’m Humanity, and I’ve gone extinct
Bye-bye
Don’t tell me it was a mistake
It sure doesn’t feel like it was
Here’s a story of love
Once upon a time
There was an old man and an old woman
The two picked apples and ate them
Apples are red
Red is the stoplight
Stop, stop
Evolution, stop
I want to blame this on love
I want to blame this on love
Stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it
Stop it, stop it, stop the evolution
Stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it
Stop it, stop it, don’t stop it
I want to blame this on love (Stop it, stop it, stop the evolution)
I want to blame this on love (Stop it, stop it, don’t stop it)
The sea, the mountain, the wind, the birds, the sky, the stars, and your voice
With A and G and C and T, DNA makes who you are
A pristine area of land, sea, and sky, a scene from the future you’ve seen before
3, 2, 1, the star of hope, a scene from an evolved future
Good and evil, heads and tails, 0 and 1, light and shadow
God, god, hello, yes, yes, see you again
There were so many here, the memories are here
I want to blame this on love (Stop it, stop it, stop the evolution)
I want to blame this on love (Stop it, stop it, don’t stop it)
All the happiness there was
All the lovers we swore love with
How did all this happen?
I’m Humanity, good to meet you
Hello

【Trailer】The End of the Special Time We Were Allowed
A Shingo Ota's Documentary Film
*YAMAGATA International Documentary Film Festival New Asian Currents OFFICIAL SELECTION
2013|HD|16:9|JAPAN|151min|Documentary|Color|Stereo
【Story】The film's protagonist, director's friend took his own life with a suicide note pleading that this film be completed. Moving in and out of documentary and fiction, the story becomes chaotic and soon drifts toward destruction.
【Director's Statement】
He left a note saying, Finish the movie, along with a tape of his suicide. I blamed myself, wondering if turning his condition into a subject for a documentary is what drove him over the edge, but after further thinking, I wondered if he had a talent for suicide as well as music, and decided to complete this documentary as a message to developed nations where suicide is a taboo subject.
【Synopsis】
This documentary tells the story of the latter days of the life of the musician Sota Masuda. Brimming with talent, he made his big break when he won a music contest at age 17, showing that making a living from music was not beyond his reach. However, Masuda, the head of his band, broke it up when the other members moved on to university. He moved to Tokyo alone, where he met with harsh reality, and relied on drugs to blunt the pain. The camera shows little of the man who was once captivated audiences and was surrounded by friends. After a brush with death by overdose, he returned to his hometown.
Friends invite him to start getting back into music, but while they were interested in it as a hobby and way to pass the time, Masuda was a professional who insisted on quality. This attitude slowly created a gap between them until the relationship collapsed. Masuda then contacted his old band mates and they started performing together again, but the audiences were always smaller than Masuda had hoped.
Director Shingo Ota, who watched Masuda shine on stage in high school revives him through film. Director Ota, still admiring Masuda, was invited by other musician friends and went to Sota's hometown where they restarted their life of music together.
Masuda's final, fatal decision was to commit suicide by a river where he once admired the beautiful sunsets. He left a note and a tape that captured the event for director Shingo Ota, who would later wonder if his late friend had a talent for suicide as well as music. He uses film to piece together the final years of Masuda's life and imagines what awaited him after death. This film leaps over the barriers that separate documentary and fiction, and blends elements of imagination with a journey of recollection of a life choked by self-destruction.

Sakamoto + Takatani - LIFE-fii
LIFE-fluid, invisible, inaudible... © Ryuichi Sakamoto + Shiro Takatani (Japan, 2007)
Art installation commissioned by the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) and created by universally respected composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and video artist and artistic director of Dumb Type, Shiro Takatani
polarM [mirrored] testing @ YCAM, Yamaguchi (J)
Testing before the premiere presentation of the situation polar m [mirrored] by Carsten Nicolai and Marko Peljhan (to be presented on Saturday, 13 November 2010) at the YCAM Center in Yamaguchi, Japan. The installation explores natural radiation phenomena and confronts them with the limits of human sensorial perception. Our understanding of the basic indeterminacy and the non-linear intelligence that one finds in nature's apparent randomness and noise, is limited by the physical characteristics of our senses. The installation offers an unusual insight into the complexity of those natural structures. Like its predecessor project, polar, that was created at the Canon Artlab in Tokyo in 2000 and that won the Prix Ars Electronica for Interactive Art in 2001, polar m [mirrored] was created by the German artist Carsten Nicolai and the Slovenian artist Marko Peljhan. The exhibition is curated by Yukiko Shikata (guest curator) and Kazunao Abe (YCAM).

Natsuo Yamaguchi: Chief Representative, New Komeito (ENGLISH Only)
Note: I edited the following video to contain ENGLISH ONLY here. Natsuo Yamaguchi: Chief Representative, New Komeito
I was hoping he would hit on Japan's Energy situation, but instead the interview concentrated on the Diet LDP, Collective Self Defense, Article 9, Article 13, Security Legislation, and replacing Special Measures Laws with Permanent Measures Laws. Even though Mr. Yamaguchi didn't address any Japanese energy issues, I decided to post it anyway ... since I took the time to translate it for you.

Natsuo Yamaguchi
Chief Representative, New Komeito
12:00-14:00 Wednesday, September 25, 2013
For some, it is one of the mysteries of Japanese politics: what keeps New Komeito in coalition with the Liberal Democratic Party? Consider their policies. The LDP is determined to revise Japan's 1946 war renouncing constitution. Its Buddhist-backed pacifist partner rejects revision. The LDP wants to switch on Japan's mothballed atomic reactors and sell nuclear technology abroad. Komeito quietly campaigned against nuclear power during an upper house election in July.
Before the lower house election that put them back in office last December, Komeito not only publicly opposed the LDP on these issues, it expressed doubts about Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's key economic plans, including his desire to curtail the Bank of Japan's independence. Komeito does not share Abe's views on history and would also clearly prefer that he did not visit Yasukuni Shrine.
Komeito can be unusually forthright about its role. Last month its leader, Natsuo Yamaguchi, dubbed it an opposition party within the ruling party. Members of its main support base Soka Gakkai, Japan's largest lay Buddhist organization, sometimes describe the party's role as being a 'brake' on LDP excesses.
Yamaguchi became leader of the party at a low point in its political history, following the coalition government's loss to the Democratic Party of Japan in 2009. Four years later, the coalition is back in business with a mandate for change. But how will the tensions in policy play out in the coming months? Will Komeito continue to play its role as spoiler at the LDP party?
Yamaguchi is a graduate of the University of Tokyo and was a lawyer until he made the move into politics. A veteran Lower House member, he has a reputation for being a consummate and smooth political performer, and for not shirking a political fight.
