God Bless Fly Fishing The Yampa River | Beyond The Fly - Ep. 6 S. 2
My friends!!! Here we are back in the saddle for another edition of Beyond The Fly. Summer has been productive, fun, stressful, a roller coaster of a ride you could say. Yet it's opened many new doors in the fly fishing community, my health, and revived the outlook on life. The camera just hasn't been rolling during this time. I've missed creating content and sharing the journey so lets get straight to it. The Yampa River has been on my radar for a return trip after netting the largest Brown Trout to date back in November. The PR trout was the cherry on top with the area surrounding the Yampa being a 7 layered dark chocolate mousse cake when it comes to an experience & fly fishing therapy. With flows finally coming down and summer buggy madness in the air the Yampa was calling. The long trek to get out of the Denver area was made and once again I found myself standing in the Stagecoach State Park parking lot. I'm not sure what is more appeasing to the eyes, the Yampa covered in winters grip or the lush colorful vibes of summer? Regardless the expectations for the day was low and the need for fly fishing therapy through the roof. God Bless fly fishing and this remarkable land we call America!!! Let's get on the water and Euro Nymph this pristine tailwater called the Yampa River.
Thank you for watching and hanging out here on the channel. I greatly appreciate all the support.

This channel is dedicated to more than just fly fishing. It is about overcoming major life challenges, embracing the new, sharing the adventures, and soaking up the healing power of simply being outside. It has taken years to get to this point and I can truly say that fly fishing is a key component in my recovery from a continued battle with Lyme Disease.

Steamboat - Yampa Valley
This silent, 16mm color moving image film was made circa 1950-1957, possibly by R. B. (Bud) Hooper of Sonochrome Pictures, for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. It depicts the Yampa Valley in Colorado, as well as the towns of Milner, Kremmling, and Steamboat Springs through all four seasons. There are shots of skiers and ski jumpers on Howelsen Hill and a ski race on Lincoln Avenue during Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs; cars driving down Rabbit Ears Pass into the Yampa Valley; a fly fisherman in a mountain stream; the Mt. Harris Coal company; logging; cattle ranching; and trains travelling throughout the Yampa Valley, among other subjects. The film measures 882 feet, with a run-time of 24:30. It is held in the moving image collections of History Colorado (Accession # 86.242.139).

Steamboat Spring, Routt County, Colorado, United States, North America
The city of Steamboat Springs is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Routt County, Colorado, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,088. The city is an internationally known winter ski resort destination. The Steamboat Springs tourism industry is highlighted by Steamboat Ski Resort, which is on Mount Werner in the Park Range just east of the town. It also contains the much smaller Howelsen Ski Area. It is located in the upper valley of the Yampa River, along U.S. Highway 40 just west of the Continental Divide and Rabbit Ears Pass. The area surrounding Steamboat Springs was originally inhabited by the Yampatikas Utes, who hunted in the valley during the summer. Trappers began to move through the area during the first decades of the 19th century. James Harvey Crawford, the founder of Steamboat Springs, first arrived in the spring of 1874. The Crawford family moved there in 1876, and for the first five years were the sole permanent residents of the town. The native Utes were forcibly removed from the area to a reservation in Utah by the U.S. Army starting in 1879. Milestones in the development of the pioneer town included the first sawmill in 1873, incorporation of the town in 1900, and the arrival of the railroad in 1909. The economy of the region was originally based on ranching and mining, which still have a large presence in the county. Steamboat is home to natural hot springs that are located throughout the area (see Geography). Upon first hearing a chugging sound, early trappers believed that a steamboat was coming down the river. When the trappers saw that there was no steamboat, and that the sound was coming from a hot spring, they decided to name the spring Steamboat Springs. Originally, skiing was the only method of transportation during harsh and snowy Rocky Mountain winters. In turn, the popularity of skiing as a winter pastime catalyzed development of the town and other communities all over the Rocky Mountains. In 1913, Carl Howelsen, a Norwegian, moved to town and introduced ski jumping. Howelsen built the first jump on Howelsen Hill, now part of the Howelsen Ski Area. He also founded the annual Winter Carnival, a celebration still held each winter. The festival includes ski racing and jumping, dog sledding, and chariot events down Lincoln Avenue, the city's main street. Light shows on both Mount Werner and Howelsen Hill are highlights. The Steamboat Ski Resort was largely established by two local men, Jim Temple and John Fetcher. Temple led the effort to develop the area. Fetcher, a local rancher, was the main designer and builder. The resort opened on what was then called Storm Mountain in 1963. In 1974, The Industrial Company (TIC) was started in Steamboat Springs and has since grown into one of the largest industrial construction companies in the United States with revenues of approximately $2 billion in 2007. The company is one of the largest employers in Routt County and has more than 9,000 employees worldwide. In 1993, the City Council of Steamboat Springs, Colorado conducted a poll of its residents to choose a new name for the bridge that crossed the Yampa River on Shield Drive. With 7,717 votes, the winning name was James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge. The bridge was officially dedicated in September 1993, and James Brown appeared at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the event. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.1 square miles (26 km2), all of it land except for the Yampa River. The Yampa Valley and surrounding area contain several geothermal hot springs. The city is named after the Steamboat Spring, located near the present-day library and the old train depot. The spring itself was so named because its bubbling sounded like a steamboat to early settlers. Unfortunately, the construction of the railroad, which passes right next to the Steamboat Spring, silenced the chugging sound in 1908. Locals take pride in the name of their town, as evidenced by the humorously named Steamboat Yacht Club, a local restaurant formerly located on the Yampa River. Though there are no steamboats in the town, except for an allegorical steamboat playground in West Lincoln Park, the area does offer two hot springs that are open to the public.

493-The Tragedy at Oak Creek, A Special Place Remembered
This is a story of returning to the Oak Creek, California area 10 years after a natural tragedy occurred there. This place will always be a special for me and takes me back to my younger years in the Eastern Sierra.
This area had been burned in an intense, lightning sparked range fire in July 2007 destroying the Ashworth Ranch.
On July 12, 2008 tropical moisture moved through here causing thunderstorms and pockets of intense rain.
In the late afternoon, a cell of intense rain was centered in the eastern sierra Baxter Pass area, just west of this location.
Around 5 pm, water, sediment, and debris began moving down tributaries in the Oak Creek drainage area, eventually concentrating in the north and south forks of Oak Creek.
At about 5:30 pm a hyper-concentrated flow destroyed a motorhome parked here at the Oak Creek campground on the north fork of Oak Creek, and its sole occupant jumped into the flow but he managed to survive.
By then, the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery had been severely damaged along with several Fish and Game employee residences.

Yampa River Flyfishing below Stagecoach Reservoir
Here's a taste of the Yampa River below Stagecoach Reservoir near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. If you're headed to Steamboat and have three hours to fish, this is the place that I'd go. This video was shot in October 2011 and the weather was fine for fishing. The guys at Steamboat Flyfisher set me up with the flies I needed. Be sure to take $7 cash to pay the self-service park fee.
More Spring Front Range Fly Fishing - Colorado
A friend and I were excited to visit a stretch of water we love, but with its higher elevation, water temperatures were still only in the mid 30's and the resident cutthroats and cutbows were fairly lethargic. Decided to head back downstream where the fish (browns) and bug life were more active and had some success. Looks like runoff is upon us now, but stoneflies should remain a main food source and fish should be hanging near the edges and in slower water. Have fun out there.
