China urges Japan to treasure peace at Nanjing Massacre memorial
China urges Japan to safeguard world peace and remember history, Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said on Wednesday, as the country remembered the victims killed by Japanese troops during the World War II. Yu made the remarks at a state memorial ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre in the city of Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province.

Joan Hinton Interview with Neil Burton (edited from tape 8, 10-27 minutes).
Joan describes arriving to Yanan to help the Communist in the liberation areas and the work that was to be done.
Joan was to make a dump cart for coal and describes the change from working on the atom bomb in Alamos (USA in 1945) to pre-industrial China, 1948.
Joan recalls that in Los Alamos we had all the stuff and making a bomb which killed 150000, one shot. Here, they were building a new world from nothing

Yao Ming to become first Chinese to enter Basketball Hall of Fame
China's Yao Ming and fellow former NBA icons Shaquille O'Neal and Allen Iverson will be among 10 people inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday. Yao, the former Houston Rockets center who retired in 2011, will become the tallest Hall of Famer at 2.29 meters.

Most of all it was really quiet inside the funeral hall because it's our intention to say goodbye to her without crying. Everyone followed the organisers' instructions to be quiet and solemn. The atmosphere inside was alright, it didn't feel too sad.

STORYLINE:
Thousands of grieving fans have queued outside a Hong Kong funeral parlour to pay their final respects to the late Canto-pop diva Anita Mui, who died last month, aged 40.
Mourners filled two nearby basketball courts across the street from the Hong Kong Funeral Home, whose entrance was adorned with white wreaths. Some fans wore black sweat shirts reading We'll miss you forever.
The territory's top stars also filed in to pay tribute, including singers Sammi Cheng and Gigi Leung and action movie star Jackie Chan.
A black-and-white portrait of Mui in top hat and suit, which was once used for an album cover, was displayed in the funeral home. A sign above the picture contained the Buddhist inscription, Toward a heavenly place.
Hong Kong television networks said more than 3,000 people had gathered by Sunday evening. Some of the fans sobbed as they prepared to bid final farewell to the legendary pop singer and actress.

It's fifty years since Mao Zedong declared the People's Republic of China, unifying a war-torn country,
Since then, the communist ideology known as Mao Zedong Thought has given way to the pragmatic, capitalistic reforms of Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin which the new leaders call 'Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.
But 23 years after his death, millions still worship Mao as China's only modern, national hero.
Mao memorials and even temples have sprouted all over the country, and one man has even devoted his life to sculpting statues of the late leader.
Much has changed in the old Chinese revolutionary stronghold of Yan'an in the northwestern Shaanxi Province since Mao Zedong lived there over 50 years ago.
Dirt and cave homes have largely given way to modern buildings.
But people's belief in Mao as a hero is still obvious.
And one Yan'an resident has taken his devotion to the late leader and turned it into a lifetime passion.
Day in, day out, 48-year old Wang Wenhai sits in his front room and molds clay into statues of Mao Zedong.
Wang used to work at the Yan'an Revolutionary Museum.
But, after ten years of reading works by Mao and absorbing the philosophy of the Great Helmsman, Wang decided that only an art form could express the respect and devotion he felt for the founder of the New China.
And as a novice sculptor Wang took lessons from an art teacher until he was able to begin sculpting likenesses of the great leader.
Now, with the help of his wife, Wang Wenhai sculpts six to eight statues of Mao every week.
To date, he has sculpted over 1-thousand-600 statues of the Chairman.
Wang takes inspiration from his huge collection of posters of Mao, which are posted all over his house.
He has recreated the Chairman in many guises, from young revolutionary to elderly statesman poised in an armchair, and there is even a cubist Mao.
China today is very different from when Mao ruled.
His radical but often disastrous policies caused great suffering.
Many have been revised after severe criticism.
And yet, it is mostly China's workers and peasants who continue to revere the late Chairman.
Reforms have brought corruption and nepotism in their wake.
And many common people seem to yearn for what they believe were purer, cleaner days.

Some bureaucrats have forgotten that they should serve the people. They have forgotten the common people. They only work for their own interests. They think only about their own homes, their entertainment, luxury. The newspapers have reported it. So common people feel very angry. And they really yearn for Mao ZedongThought.

Further north in Shaanxi Province, this Mao temple, built in 1994, occupies a small piece of land at Woyunshan.
Surrounded by desert and reached by an 18 kilometre (10 mile) dirt road, the temple is remote and attracts few visitors.
At first glance, it looks like any other ordinary Taoist temple.
But inside, the visitor is not greeted by the usual Buddha or Taoist gods but by statues of China's three great revolutionary leaders -- Zhu De, Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong.
In the Marxist tradition, Mao encouraged Chinese people to reject all forms of religion.
He believed that religion was a feudal custom and prevented people from fighting oppression.
But now, Mao sits in the central seat usually occupied by Buddha.
Local leaders, no doubt aware of this contradiction, have officially called this place a Mao Memorial Hall.
And they have even put up a sign forbidding visitors to burn incense.
Back in Beijing, tourists are able to pay their respects to Mao in a more official way.

China commemorates 120th birth anniv. of Mao Zedong
China is celebrating the 120th birth anniversary of its founding father Mao Zedong. A number of ceremonies are being held across the country to mark the occassion. In Mao's hometown of Shaoshan in the southern Province of Hunan, authorities on Tuesday offered flowers to the statue of Mao. Locals were joined by admirers from across the country at a memorial hall established to remember the leader. In the Jinggang Mountains, regarded as the birthplace of the Chinese revolution led by Mao Zedong, visitors tried to experience the tough life of Chinese Red Army soldiers. Dressed in the uniforms of the Red Army, nearly a hundred people marched through a five-kilometer road that Mao and his troops walked decades ago. Meanwhile, symposiums remembering Mao Zedong have been held in Xibaipo in the northern province of Hebei. The village served as the Chinese Communist Party's headquarters in the late 1940s. In Yan'an, a key base of the Chinese Red Army, an art exhibition featuring the Chinese revolution has attracted many visitors. Born in 1893, Mao Zedong was the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, the People's Republic of China and the Chinese PLA. He served as Chairman of the PRC from 1949 till his death in 1976, and is regarded as one of the most influential and decisive figures in modern world history.

China is celebrating what would have been the 120th birthday of communist leader Mao Zedong.
Chairman Mao was the founder of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Whilst members of the Politburo Standing Committee of China's ruling Communist Party visited Mao's mausoleum in Tiananmen Square, events around the country were more low-key this year.
This may be due to the economic and social reforms being pursued by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The one-child policy will be relaxed and markets will become less regulated.
Some are unhappy with reforms, blaming them for widening the gap between the rich and poor. Leftists critical of the economic changes praise Mao Zedong as a way of voicing their dissent.
