This time we visited Yanagawa City, a place famous for its riverboats and delicious eel.
Yanagawa is known primarily for its hundreds of kilometers of canals.
Riverboats, called donkobune, powered by a man with a pole take tourists on
short cruises, known as kawakudari (going down the river) around the town.
Interesting spots are for example the Yanagawa Ohana, the villa of the Tachibana
family who ruled Yanagawa City 400 years ago or dozens of delicious restaurants which serve
eel dishes. Our presenter Kin from China will show you what this beautiful city has to offer.

Yanagawa is known primarily for its hundreds of kilometers of canals.
Yanagawa Tachibana-tei Ohana is the former residence of the Tachibana family, a clan of feudal lords during the Sengoku and Edo periods. Its garden, the Shotoen, was designated as a national site of natural beauty, where there are about 280 pine trees that have been standing for 200 to 300 years.
Shotoen Japanese Garden was constructed by order of the fourth feudal lord of the Yanagawa domain, Tachibana Akitora, in 1697. The garden was modeled after the Matsushima islands (one of the Three Great Views of Japan) in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. The present garden was reconstructed in the late Meiji Era (early 20th century) when 200 old pine trees were planted and more than 1,500 garden stones were placed in and around the pond. This garden has been preserved in its original state as the “Eastern Garden” and was deemed a Government-Designated Place of Scenic Beauty in 1978.

Ohana's garden, Shohto Park, which was made in 1697 (Genroku 10) as a place of relaxation for the lord of the Yanagawa domain, is now designated as a place of scenic beauty of the nation. This garden was designed after the model of Matsushima Island, one of the three most famous scenic places in Japan. In winter, wild ducks come flying in flocks, making the garden even more beautiful.

Yanagawa Canal Cruise // While I was visiting Fukuoka, I took a day trip out to a small town called Yanagawa that has been carved out by canals. Japanese tourists go to Yanagawa in herds to do a canal cruise, and for good reason. It was one of the most relaxing and joyous experiences of my trip to Japan.

柳川藩主立花邸 御花 3STORIES
松濤園旧柳川藩主・立花家の別邸だった「御花」。
江戸時代中期、元文年間頃（1763～1740）には、藩主が政務の疲れを癒すために、
たびたび立ち寄っていたことが日記にも書かれています。
当時、この辺りは「御花畠」と呼ばれていたことから、
柳川の人々は親しみをこめ「御花」と呼ぶようになりました。
明治42～43年には十四代立花寛治によって、現在の建物・庭園の
大部分の新築が行われ、西洋館と大広間、宴遊会場といった
当時の建築様式を代表するものになっています。
仙台藩松島（現宮城県）にみたてた松濤園と呼ばれる庭園は、
昭和53年、国の名勝に指定されています。
江戸時代から続く歴史をより感じられる空間へ。
日本庭園「松涛園」など美しい情景と、
料亭旅館ならではの自慢の郷土料理をご堪能ください。
Trip to Yanagawa
Yanagawa is a city on Japan’s Kyushu island. It’s known for its many canals, which are navigated on small boats. Ohana is the centuries-old villa of the Tachibana family. It overlooks the Shoto-en Garden, with hundreds of pine trees arranged around a rock-filled pond. The Tachibana Museum exhibits Noh costumes and Edo-era dolls. The former home of writer Hakushu Kitahara is now a museum dedicated to his work.
We went to Yanagawa on 2nd November 2018 and took a really long boat trip. We tried local food and bought some beautiful souvenirs. The place was really beautiful and the local people were very friendly so we had fun.
