Myanmar Railways - around Yangon Central Station
The central station in Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, plays host to an extensive network of suburban trains (including the famed Circular Railway) and a high number of long-distance trains on the Myanmar/Burma's metre-gauge network. Here are some shots from a morning of observing the going-ons around the station.
0:00 An unidentified long-distance train, after having unloaded its passengers, moves out of the station.
2:24 A local train departs; at the same time a counterclockwise Circle Line train with a set of secondhand Japanese DMUs arrives and the long-distance train seen in the previous shot is sent through the wash rack.
3:52 The Circle Line train departs.
4:46 A mixed train departs behind a former Indian YDM-4. These Alco-design locomotives were once ubiquitous on India's metre-gauge lines, which are rapidly disappearing as the country unifies on broad gauge. A number have been sold to Myanmar.
6:22 On board a clockwise Circle Line train, an inbound long-distance train (probably from Bagan or Pyay) trundles past us behind one of the relatively new, Chinese-built DF-class locomotives.
More information on the numerous models of MR locomotives can be found here:

Yangon Circular Railway is the local commuter rail network that serves the Yangon metropolitan area. Operated by Myanmar Railways, the 45.9-kilometre (28.5 mi) 39-station loop system connects satellite towns and suburban areas to the city. The railway has about 200 coaches, runs 20 times and sells 100,000 to 150,000 tickets daily. The loop, which takes about three hours to complete, is a way to see a cross section of life in Yangon. The Railway is heavily utilized by lower-income commuters, as it is (along with buses) the cheapest method of transportation in Yangon.
Yangon Circular Railway was built during colonial times by the British. The double track railway was built in 1954.
The entire circular trip takes approximately 3 hours and costs foreigners 300 Kyat or 25 cents.

BURMA: Yangon Central Railway Station 2010
Yangon Central Railway Station is the largest railway station in Myanmar.
The station designed in traditional Burmese architectural style was completed in 1954.
The old station became a favorite target for Japanese bombers during World War II. In 1943 it was destroyed by British forces retreating to India.[2]
The station was rebuilt following the war according to a design drawn by engineer Hla Thwin and based on Burmese traditional architectural styles. The new structure was 5110 square meters (55,000 sq ft) in size. To the north were grass lawns, gardens and wide access lanes. The new design was approved by the Railway Authority on 7 May 1946. Construction was started in January 1947 by engineer Sithu U Tin and completed in May 1954 at a total cost of K4.75 million. The opening ceremony of the new Yangon Central Railway Station was held on 5 June 1954.

Myanmar Sleeper Train from Mandalay to Yangon
Follow Us as we share with you a highlight of our Myanmar adventure - taking the sleeper train operated by Myanmar Railways!
Upon checking out of our transit hotel, Hotel Marvel, we proceeded to Platform 1 at the Mandalay train station just below our hotel. The friendly hotel bellboy was nice enough to help porter our bags to the platform. Really appreciate that warm gesture.
Our journey on Sleeper Train Number 4 to Yangon from Mandalay took us about 18 hours. The normal duration was about 16 hours. However, the train we took was delayed by about 2 hours.
We booked ourselves 2 bunk beds in the sleeper cabin with the assistance of a local tour agency. We made a special request for the agency to help us secure the one and only sleeper cabin with 2 bunk beds, for the convenience of vlogging. (The rest of the sleeper cabins have 4 bunk beds.)
The journey en-route was an interesting, albeit a rather bumpy one. We were treated with many scenes of country life in Myanmar. Farmers ploughing their plots with the aid of water buffalos, children playing in the river, locals looking forlorn as they sat at the train station waiting for their loved ones perhaps, enterprising locals peddling food and other necessities as our train made pit-stops at various stations en-route, and so much more!
It was all in all an interesting journey, which helped shed some light on the way of life in the countryside of this wonderful country. Though tiring, we enjoyed the train ride very much.
Would you consider getting on board a train operated by Myanmar Railways as your preferred mode of commute across the country? Let us know what you think in the comments section below! :D
