China's Yangtze river, the third longest in the world, turned red on Thursday afternoon, state television reported.

I went with my buddy Ryan to the Black Mountain Valley near Wansheng, Chongqing. It was a really beautiful and relaxing place - just the trees, the water, the fresh air.
Black Mountain Valley is located in Wansheng District Jingxing Township, 20 km from Wansheng District, Chongqing. High mountains, dense and inaccessible forests and rivers - all protected by the Chinese government. The climate here is subtropical and temperate, and the forest coverage rate has reached 97 percent and has been hailed as the Chongqing and Guizhou Biological Gene Bank. According to experts, this place is currently Chongqing's and China's largest, best-preserved original ecological natural scenic spot.
The valley is home to mountains, peaks, the secluded gorge itself, cliffs, forests, woodlands, waterfalls, clear water, caves, cliff, pontoon bridges, clouds, rural, primitive vegetation, rare animals, and numerous types of plants.
Black Mountain Valley Scenic Area has a total length of 13 km, including 6 km of electric vehicle paths, 6 km Plank Roads (including the boardwalk), and one km of mountain tourism cableway (also within walking distance).
River width is generally about 5-20 meters, with most less than 10 meters wide, and at its narrowest point, only two meters.

12Provinces Suffer from Severe Drought

While the south is experiencing severe floods, severest drought
in decades is hitting 12 provinces in China such as Henan,
Hebei and others.
Some areas have been without water for three months.
Experts analyze water and ecology are destroyed at the cost
of rapid economic growth.
Projects such as the Three Gorges Dam and the Water Diversion
are causing huge negative impact to the surrounding ecology.
Severest drought in decades has occurred in 12 provinces
such as Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Inner Mongolia,
Xinjiang and others the summer of this year.
For instance, Shaanxi suffered its worst drought in 53 years,
Henan suffered the worst one in 63 years.
Some areas have been without water for three months.
Mainland media reported that as of July 30, drought covers
more than 11.9 million acres of farm land,
affecting 2.07 million farm animals.
More than 1.6 million people lack drinking water.
Drought mainly centers in Henan province, accounting for half
of the drought stricken area in the entire nation.
Mr. Du, a resident of Henan: There has been no rain. All the
crops were dry dead. We have to get drinking water in pails
from tens of miles away, as well as food.
Mr. Du indicates the local government has done nothing to the
disaster despite the severity of the drought and the hardship.
A peasant of Xi'an, Shaanxi province, Mr. Zhao, told NTD TV
about the local drought.
He also revealed that local reservoirs
were deliberately destroyed.
Mr. Zhao: The crops have withered. The reservoirs and the
wells were ruined intentionally long ago.
Since then, there has been no harvest.
Mr. Zhao explains, since local leaders deliberately
destroyed the irrigation facilities, farming was forced to stop.
The deserted land was then resold and became personal gain
for the village leaders. Villagers were left with nothing.
The Tibetan Plateau, the birthplace of some of China's major
rivers, suffers severe damage and pollution after dozens of
years of exploitation in the west.
Dry riverbeds are widespread in the Plateau.
Similar issues have also occurred to many other areas in China,
such as the northeast wetlands being swallowed up
by real estate development.
Sulmaan Khan, assistant Professor of Chinese
Foreign Relations at Tufts University, described in an article in
Foreign Affairs magazine, “The Chinese public is tired of the
water shortages, unsafe drinking water, and soil contamination
caused by haphazard urban development.”
The water shortage is not only a serious damage to the ecology,
but also suicidal.
The article mentioned the water diversion project brings
immense ecological risks.
“It is quite possible that the project will disrupt the river
systems and exacerbate water shortages, rather than solve them,
by triggering soil erosion.”
But, Beijing has yet to develop a plan that addresses the entirety
of its environmental woes.
Chinese financial think tank researcher Gong Shengli:
The water diversion and the Three Gorges dam, as well as the
Sanmenxia power plants built by the Soviet Union,
have resulted in disasters hard to resolve.
Many seismic activities and mud slides in surrounding areas
such as Chongqing, Sichuan and so forth, have been analyzed
to be greatly connected to ecological damage brought
by the Three Gorges Dam.
Temperatures between August 2 and 4 reached as high as
37 to 39 degrees C, and even 40 degrees in the Sichuan Basin,
Chongqing, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Hubei.
July 30, Hydrology and Resources Bureau of Henan Province
issued a drought warning: No rainfall is expected next week.
And by mid-August, most parts of Shaanxi will continue under
high temperatures and little rain, the drought will worsen.

Dams, dams, and more dams! China is home to roughly half the world's large dams, and hydropower is set to play a key role in helping China meet its 2020 carbon intensity reduction commitments. Dozens of new large hydro projects are underway across the southwestern part of the country, where steep mountains and big rivers mean great hydro potential. Yet many of those projects are in culturally or ecologically sensitive areas that are home to large concentrations of ethnic minorities, and may involve trans-boundary rivers -- all of which bring the long-term sustainability of the projects to the fore. This CEF meeting will feature WANG Hao (Institute of Water Resources, Chinese Academy of Water Science; Douglas Smith (International Hydropower Association); and Desiree Tullos (Biological and Ecological Engineering, Oregon State University), who will explore those dam trends and challenges in China. The three panelists also will discuss how sustainability priorities along biophysical, socioeconomic, and geopolitical axes can be integrated into the design, construction, and operation phases of dams, with particular attention to China, home to half the world's large dams and the site of major dam construction efforts in the coming decades.

Massive rescue operation underway on the Yangtze River
A passenger ship carrying 458 people capsized in the Yangtze River while traveling from Nanjing to Chongqing. Rescue teams have located the ship in the Hubei section of the River on Tuesday morning. Thirteen people have been rescued so far.

Why did Chinese cruise ship capsize on the Yangtze?
Nearly 400 people remain unaccounted for after a cruise ship capsized on China's Yangtze River on Monday, and it is still unclear what caused the tragedy.
The boat was carrying 405 passengers - mostly elderly tourists - as well as five travel agency employees and 46 crew members.
With Chinese officials keeping journalists at a safe distance, brief accounts from some of the 14 people rescued offer the best clues as to what caused the Eastern Star to overturn.
We know that whatever happened, it happened quickly. One survivor said the ship capsized incredibly fast while another said it happened within a minute.
Freak storm?
The captain and chief engineer, who were among the survivors, both reportedly said the vessel was caught in a freak storm and one passenger described it as tilting at a 45-degree angle before going down.
This was backed up by meteorologists in China who confirmed that a sudden, strong and violent storm hit the area at the time of the incident. The suddenness of the storm could explain why no emergency signal was sent.
But, like details about the ship's speed and course, this is likely to remain an unknown until police have finished questioning the captain.
Officials have insisted that the ship was not overcrowded and had enough lifejackets and lifeboats, but say there simply wasn't enough time for the crew or passengers to react.

It was carrying 405 passengers - mostly elderly tourists but one three-year-old - as well as five travel agency employees and 46 crew members.
The ship is owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corporation, and passengers had booked their trip through a travel agency in Shanghai.
The cruise left the eastern city of Nanjing in April and was travelling to Chongqing in the south-west via the Three Gorges - a journey of at least 1,500km (930 miles).
If bad weather was to blame, it remains unclear why the ship was the only one to capsize on the busy river.
The captain of a freighter that passed the Eastern Star shortly before it overturned said he experienced fog-like conditions and that the rain interfered with his radar.
He eventually anchored his ship on shore while the storm passed, so why didn't the cruise ship do the same? And if there were weather warnings, were they ignored?
Unfortunately, the maritime authority responsible for issuing weather warnings on the river has so far declined to answer questions from journalists.
Defects on board?
The 76m-long, 2,200 tonne ship is owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corporation. According to state media, it was built in 1994 and was designed to carry 534 people.
Authorities in Nanjing, where the Eastern Star began its final journey, are reported to have held the ship and five other cruiseliners for violating standards during a safety inspection campaign in 2013.
Records on the Nanjing Maritime Safety website show the vessel was detained but the reasons why are unclear. Chinese news website Caixin reported that it has had frequent modifications in recent years.
Whether the vessel was shipworthy or not, some experts suggest that a river cruiser of its type would not have been able to withstand reported winds of up to 80mph (130 kph).
The river ships tend to have a lower standard on wind-resistance and wave-resistance than ocean ships, Zhong Shoudao, president of the Chongqing Boat Design Institute, told reporters.
With Chinese authorities remaining tight-lipped, it could be some time before we know for sure what caused this tragedy.
