Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto - 八坂神社●京都 - Japan As It Truly Is
Yasaka Shrine is one of the busiest shrines in Kyoto and offers something unique that you rarely can see. Discover why.
Yasaka Shrine (Yasaka Jinja) is one of Japan's oldest and was established in 656 A.D. It serves as the host of Kyoto's annual Gion Festival. In fact the Gion district came about because of the shrine and today it is famous as the place to see geisha (geiko). It is also next to Maruyama Park, a popular cherry blossom spot.

These are just a handful of shrines and temples to see in Kyoto. There are so many additional incredible sites and attractions. More videos coming soon.

RinaPhie in Japan 1: Off to Kyoto! Visiting Yasaka Shrine & Kiyomizudera.
Hello guys! Thanks for coming back! ^_^
Here's some things you gotta know about this video:
- This video is from spring 2 years ago, when I traveled to Japan with my friend Sophie. I finally got around to editing xD
- Our native language is German, and we both speak English and Japanese as well. But we're still learning, so mistakes are bound to happen. Please don't mind them ;)
- These are just some videos we took while being there with the intention of maybe uploading them, but we're obviously no professional vloggers so the camerawork isn't the best. Hope you can still enjoy! :)
Here's what this video contains:
- us arriving in Shinagawa + introduction
- walking to Gion, Yasaka shrine
- Higashiyama
- Kiyomizudera
- lots of foodgasms from Sophie ;)
There'll be more videos coming up, so please check them out if you're interested! Feel free to comment and ask questions too!
Thanks for watching! ♡

HOW NOT TO PRAY AT A JAPANESE SHRINE!! Yasaka Shrine in KYOTO
Decided to check out Yasaka shrine which is home to one of the bigger festivals in Kyoto in the summer, The Gion Festival. Also really popular during the cherry blossom season. While we were they I tried to teach my brother the proper way to pray at a shrine. And I totally failed. But turns out there are quite of few Japanese people who also don't know the correct way! First you throw your coin in the offering box (preferably a 5 or 50), then you bow twice, make a wish, clap twice, and end with another bow. Pretty complicated right? Try praying at a Japanese shrine next time.

Gion Matsuri: Yasaka Shrine Events (Omukae chochin/Hanagasa junko/Kankousai)
Throughout the popular Gion Festival period in July there are various rituals and forms of entertainment put on all over Kyoto for those who came to see the festival to enjoy and participate in. Folk dances performed by local children, action-packed kagura plays, dynamic drum concerts, and graceful dances by apprentice geisha are only a few of the many performances on stage and in the streets throughout the month. For those who want to watch or participate there are colorful parades and a summer purification ritual as well. Our team stopped by the Omukae Chōchin ritual, the Hanagasa Junkō parade, the Kankōsai portable shrine journey, and the Eki Jinja purification ritual in order to capture the sights and sounds of this famous festival month. Come along with us and get a taste of what the Gion Festival has to offer beyond its more famous float procession!

Yasaka Shrine (Gion Festival Host), Kyoto City, Japan
Yasaka Shrine is located in Kyoto City, Japan. This Shrine is probably the most visible and popular with the tourists both Japanese and non-Japanese. The reason is because it is right in the heart of the city, close to the main shopping avenue, Shijo Dori. If you happen to stroll from Kiyomizu Temple to up north along the Higashiyama Mountains, you will end up near Yasaka Shrine.
Yasaka Shrine is known to host the yearly Gion Festival in July. It is the biggest festival in Kyoto and probably in Japan.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Yasaka shrine〜
The buildings at Yasaka Shrine date from 1654 and were built on the order of the shogun of the day, Tokugawa Ietsuna. The entrance gate, or Ro-mon, stands at the top of a flight of stairs and the shrine is protected by two guardian statues at each side.
The stone torii gate on the south side is 9.5 m (31 feet) in height - one of the largest in Japan, and dates from 1646. Two wooden koma-inu (lion dog guardians) in the shrine are said to have been carved by the celebrated sculptor Unkei, who also created many of the statues of the Kannon Buddha at Sanjusangendo Temple, in the 13th century.
Yasaka Jinja is dedicated to the Shinto deities Susano-o-no-Mikoto and his consort Inadahime-no-Mikoto.
The many lanterns advertising the sponsors of the Gion Matsuri hang from shrine buildings and make for a beautiful sight, especially at night.
Some of the huge floats used during the Gion Matsuri are stored on the shrine grounds.

Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, Japan
Initial construction on the Shrine began in 656.The Shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami ordered that Imperial messengers were sent to report important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines; and in 991, Emperor Ichijō added three more shrines to Murakami's list. Three years later in 994, Ichijō refined the scope of that composite list by adding Umenomiya Shrine and Gion Shrine.
From 1871 through 1946, the Yasaka Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha, meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
