WCHS Channel 8 [Charleston, West Virginia] - Senior Artist (News Segment, 1978)
Here's a story that aired on WCHS-TV Channel 8 in Charleston, West Virginia about a 75-year-old senior citizen artist named Buster Weaver, whose vision was impaired but then with the help of some operations was able to see well again to paint some impressive portraits of famous people, landscapes, and historical scenes. Terry Anzur reporting (who later worked on-air at WBBM Channel 2 in Chicago starting in 1981).
Mr. Weaver, a native of the Snow Hill area (formerly lying between the Charleston city limits and Campbells Creek) had been a patient and ward of the state at Lakin State Hospital (mental institution) since 1937, and only began painting seriously in 1974 (or 1971 according to a Charleston Gazette news article dated May 18th 1973) after his innate talent was discovered by a therapist during a camping trip.
In 1977, he was released from the institution into the care of a foster family that lived on Charleston's West End, and in 1978 as this story relates, his art was displayed in the Cultural Center in Charleston.
This story also features Joe Gwinn, a local counselor who worked to help Buster.
Buster Weaver passed away in August of 1985.
(note: after originally airing locally, this story was submitted by Terry Anzur to air as a CBS network news piece, but was unfortunately rejected due to color issues that likely occurred during the transfer from film (as evidenced by the countdown leader at the beginning of the clip) to Quad videotape)
This aired on local Charleston TV sometime in late-November or early-December 1978.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. The State Of West Virginia, USA - Unravel Travel TV
The scenic rural state of West Virginia with its abundance of natural resources provides a perfect backdrop for a true American adventure holiday. Driving tours lead to quaint B&Bs and renowned warm hospitality, breathtaking landscapes carve routes for mountain biking, motorbike journeys and RVs exploring state parks. The camouflaged tracks of the many hiking trails and fishing areas display the natural beauty while championship golf courses, ski runs and white water rafting offer seasonal sporting activities.
Offering unique Appalachian culture, John Denver's ballad adequately describes its state's country roads, dramatic scenery at every turn and the spectacular kaleidoscope of colour in the Autumn. It is a state which is 80% forested, with 7 state forests, 36 state parks and 200,000 acres of protected woodland parks interlaced by 2,000 miles of rivers and streams. Accommodation ranges from log cabins, motels, guest houses to the historical Greenbrier Resort, favoured by Presidents.
West Virginia boasts seven wonders of the natural world, from beaches, waterfalls, high plains plateau to river and mountain trails, rock formations and gorges. There are several lake beaches offering swimming and boating in lush green settings. The 2,700-acre Summersville Lake and 1,500-acre Sutton Lake are great for mountain biking and hiking trails. Walkers can follow the Gentle Trail at Blackwater Falls State Park for a great view of the state's largest waterfall at 63-feet and one of its most photographed spots. Named for its amber-coloured water, the falls spill into the Blackwater Canyon and great for hiking and biking.
The New River Gorge is the perfect landscape for rafting, rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking along one of the world's oldest and scenic white water rivers. The second-tallest bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge is close by. A visit here can be elevated by taking a walk on this 876-foot-highNew River Gorge Bridge catwalk for stunning views of the gorge from one of the top ten steel structures in the world.
Dolly Sods is a 4,000-foot high plains plateau in the Monongahela National Forest. Here blueberries and huckleberries can be picked and where mountain laurel and other flora bloom. Walk the moderate Seneca Rocks Trail up to the summit for amazing scenery atop the 900foot rock formation overlooking the confluence of Seneca Creek and the North Fork South Branch Potomac River. The Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area offers world-class climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Or for a more relaxed pass-time, there's fishing for bass or trout at one of the state's many fishing hot spots: Williams River, Cranberry River, Cherry River, Cheat River, Birch River and Beech Fork Lake.
West Virginia is convenient to reach from Washington Dulles Airport, being just over one hour's drive to its eastern panhandle where Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located, the heart of civil war history in this state, when back in1863, West Virginia became the 35th State in the Union, the only state born out of the Civil War and today celebrates its culture, beauty and independence.

Plane Crash in West Virginia News Update
The pilot of a post-World War II plane died Saturday after crashing into a runway and bursting into flames, the second deadly air show crash in 24 hours.
The West Virginia Air National Guard said that no spectators were injured and that the crash site was far away from anyone at the show. Still, air show officials posted a notice on their website encouraging those who witnessed the crash to seek support if they felt viewing it had been traumatic.
The crash occurred a day after a stunt pilot crashed at a Nevada air show Friday, killing nine.
Officials have not released the pilot's name. The fixed-wing, single-engine T-28 plane is registered to John Mangan of Concord, N.C., and was built in 1958, according to a Federal Aviation Administration registry.
The Journal of Martinsburg reports the aircraft lost control during a six-plane stunt formation and then crashed on a runway near hangers at the airfield, causing thousands at the show to cry, hug and pray afterward.
The plane was part of the T-28 Warbird Aerobatic Formation Demonstration Team, which performs at air shows around the country.
The team is known as the Trojan Horsemen and its website says Jack Flash Mangan is part of the alternate wing. His biography on the site says he is a former Air Force fighter pilot who won three Meritorious Service Medals and Tactical Air Command's Instructor Pilot of the Year.

West Virginia - Interstate 77 North - Mile Marker 90-101 (4/30/12)
Me driving Interstate 77 North in West Virginia, from mile marker 90 to 101.
Note that I'm driving a tractor-trailer which is governed at 65 mph.
Also note that videos are slightly zoomed in and sped up to optimize viewing by easing camera shake. Thus, objects in the video, such as other vehicles, are actually further away than they may appear.
Due to the nature of shock absorption in big trucks, there may still be a few bumps here and there which I apologize for.
There is no sound or music to the video because I want to leave you the freedom of playing your favorite driving music while watching the video to maximize your enjoyment.
NEW Otis Gen2 main elevators - PPG Science Pavilion - Carnegie Science Center - Pittsburgh, PA
[North Shore, Pittsburgh, PA]
This was filmed on the VERY 1st day this part was open to the public (Sat, June 16th)!
These are very nice glass elevators in the newly built Pavilion wing of the Science Center! Sadly these are rather busy, as I expected, you can only see out on the ground 1st floors, can see the lobby/concession area of The Rangos Giant Cinema. These have Series 2 fixtures.
Overall, I'm very impressed with this brand new facility elevators!
