Foreigners at Yongjoosa Temple Stay learn about Korean Buddhism culture

Temple Stay is a unique chance for people to experience and learn about Korean Buddhism and its culture.
The program, which is something you can only try in Korea,... is high on many foreigners' to-do-list as well.
Seo Bo-bin takes us to experience Temple Stay.
Not far from Seoul, is the city of Hwaseong in Gyeonggi-do Province.
It's the perfect location for seeing the vibrant colors of autumn and winter scenery.
This is Yongjoosa Temple in Hwaseong.
With a history dating back 1,700 years, the Temple Stay program offers a monastic lifestyle for visitors looking to take a break from their busy lives.
Temple Stay allows participants to experience a monk's lifestyle and learn about Korean Buddhism and its culture.
The temple runs its own program, allowing participants ways to find their inner self.
Through the program, we learn about temple etiquette, the importance of food through the practice of eating and there's also the 108 prostration to help participants find self-esteem in their inner self.
From around 3 PM, visitors start to filter into the temple.
What brings foreigners to participate in the Temple Stay program?
It turns out a lot of the international students are interested in learning about Korean Buddhism.
I really want to explore the culture in every single way, so one way is to explore Buddhism here at the temple and to really see how the monks are living and the practices of Buddhism, which I know is quite big in Korea.
People come to the temple for different personal reasons. By coming here, they can learn about temple etiquettes, Buddha's teachings and be part of the Korean culture of Buddhism.
As the sun sets, it's time for dinner.
Temple food prohibits any meat, therefore it provides a healthy and clean meal.
In Buddhism, the practice of eating or 'the offering' is part of learning discipline and being grateful for the food given.
By understanding this, participants take an appropriate portion of food in their bowls.
It makes me think about food waste a lot and I think I'll be more careful to you know just eat everything that I buy and prepare.
The next day at dawn, participants take part in Yebul, a ceremony of praising Buddha by performing 108 prostrations.
The 108 prostrations represent the sufferings that people experience and although it isn't easy, the visitors do their best.
By doing this, they experience a moment of enlightenment and feel an inner calm.
Finally, the participants walk up the mountain in silence, to connect with nature and find their inner self.
Their two days at the temple are now over and it's time for the participants to go back to their daily life.
Well, I try to take away some that I can have some moments for me as well during my daily life and as well to enjoy the moment maybe a bit more.
Away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, the Temple Stay program provides a chance to find your true self.
Come and be mesmerized by the temple's breathtaking scenery and learn more about the calm and peace of Korean Buddhism.

Yongjusa Temple on Buddha's Birthday - The Walk and Talk #26
This week on the on the Walk and Talk, Jo and I return to one of our favorite places in the Hwaseong area: Yongjusa. What made our visit a little extra special was that we opted to make the trip out there on Buddha's Birthday (hence the upload being a bit late). Buddha's birthday is a national holiday in Korea despite about half the country being agnostic or atheist and a good 30% claiming to be Christian.
According to Wikipedia:
Yongjusa is a head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It is located in on the slopes of Hwasan in Taean-eup, Hwaseong, in the province of Gyeonggi, South Korea. The temple's name means dragon jewel temple.
Two large bells in the temple are believed to date to the Unified Silla period. One of them is designated national treasure 120.
The temple was initially established in 854 AD, under the name Garyangsa. It was expanded in the 10th century. It was rebuilt in the late 18th century under the orders of Jeongjo in honor of his deceased father, Prince Sado. This is one of few cases where the Joseon royal house supported Buddhism directly. At this time the temple changed to its current name.
In today's video, I'll take you through the main grounds so you can experience in real time what visiting a Korean temple is like. The worshiping halls were packed because of the holiday, so I wasn't really able to get inside, but I did manage to capture footage of the interior so you can see for yourself what this temple has to offer.
If you're in Korea during Buddha's birthday, I really recommend making a trip to a temple. Yongjusa is our closest one and was definitely a great experience.

Yongjusa Temple (용주사)
One of the great things about living in Dongtan, is that there are so many things close to where I live. On Saturday, I hopped on a few buses and found myself at Yongjusa Temple (용주사). It serves as the head of Jogye Order in Korea, and unlike many other Buddhist temples in Korea, Yongjusa isnt situated on a mountain or in a city, but rather on the outskirts of Suwon on a main road.
The temple was originally built in 854 during the 16th year of King Munseong of the Silla Dynasty. It was destroyed during the second Manchurian invasion (Byungjahoran).
During the Josen Dynasty, King Jeongjo had this temple commissioned out of respect for his father. This is significant, since during most of the Josen Dynasty, Buddhism was repressed. However, King Jeongjo was so moved by a sutra that he heard regarding parents sacrifices for their children he had the temple re-built. Its this rebuilt temple that garners the name Yongjusa.
The name is derived from a dream that King Jeongjo had the night before a celebration commemorating its completion. He dreamt of a dragon flying in the sky with a magic ball in its mouth. Thus, Yongjusa translates to Temple of the dragon with a magic ball.
In the main courtyard is the Beomjong, one of two sacred bells that date back to the Unified Silla period. This one is designated National Treasure 120.
Visitors can also find the Bumeounjunggyeong (부머은중졍) books that discuss the topic of filial affection.
Yongjusa is just a few minutes outside of Suwon and well worth your time.

South Korea Drone Flight: Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi Province, in northwestern South Korea. Its known for the late-18th-century Hwaseong Fortress, with its commanding stone wall and 4 pagoda-topped arched gates. Near Hwahongmun Gate, Hwaseong Haenggung Palace has a traditional banquet hall. The raised Yeonmudae Post, once a military training ground, offers fortress views. Suwon Hwaseong Museum explores the construction of the fortress. Yongjoosa in Hwaseong (Professor, Seo Kyung-Deok)
This temple was built by the king Jeongjo to support his parents. The part related to the devotion to his parents temple were planted many other artifacts and buildings all over the place.
If you look at the right side, there is ‘Hyohaeng Museum’. Everyone who comes to Yongjoosa visits it for exhibition.

Went to Suwon, South Korea for a day. We saw the Palace and hiked up the mountain to walk along Hwaseong Fortress, a fortified wall that encircles the old town of Suwon. We hiked for three hours and only got 3/4 or the way around. One of the most amazing places we've been to.
