Coffee Prince/ Coffee Prince Cafe, Hongdae Street, Seoul
Coffee Prince (Korean: 커피프린스 1호점; RR: Keopipeurinseu 1 Hojeom; lit. The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince) is a 2007 South Korean television series starring Yoon Eun-hye, Gong Yoo, Lee Sun-kyun, and Chae Jung-an.
This is one of the actual film set inside the drama. The drama was so popular back in 2007. We took the chance to visit the cafe while we were in Seoul. It was surreal feeling just to be inside the coffee shop. It is now operated as a normal coffee shop offering coffee, tea and chocolate based drinks.

Art and architecture mix at Korea′s MMCA
국립현대미술관의 젊은 건축가 프로그램
Korea′s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is a venue for artists especially young artists, to display not only their artwork but their visions and dreams.
Our Yim Yoon-hee takes us to the MMCA where one exhibit is garnering much attention.
Is it a building,... or is it a work of art? And what some may think is a creation of art,... is actually a constructed, cutting edge piece of architecture.
So where does art and architecture meet?
I met with a curator from the MMCA to find out.
Good morning.
So what is the relationship between art and architecture?
Who is the winner of this year′s inaugural Seoul Young Architects Program?
Thank you for that.
Life & Info: Cafes turn into botanical gardens, art galleries to attract customers
힐링을 위한 숲 카페, 문화생활 위한 갤러리카페...'카페의 변신'
Now,... we're going to talk about unique cafe trends in South Korea.
For that, we have our Yoon Jung-min in the studio.
Jung-min, normally, we think of run-of-the-mill coffee shops when we talk about cafes, but there are some unique places in Seoul and other Korean cities.
Yes, Mark. As people in South Korea drink more and more coffee, not only menus but CAFES themselves are also changing.
People don't go to cafes for JUST a cup of coffee,... but rather to take a rest, read or even enjoy art, while enjoying a beverage.
Responding to these demands, coffee shops are changing into places with various concepts.
For example, there are 'botanical garden' cafes. A coffee shop in downtown Seoul displays a variety of plants at the shop to provide a more pleasant environment for their customers.
People can relax,...while enjoying the fresh air.
I see more green plants than other shops here and it's spacious and quiet. I often visit this cafe because I can feel the fresh air thanks to the plants.
The customers can also buy plants at the coffee shop.
These days, more people don't just consume products but want a better service.
That's why many shops care more about interior design.
They say it's equally important to provide quality products and leave a good impression on customers.
And cafes are becoming a nice place for emotional healing in the busy city.
I see why demand for these kind of cafes is on the rise. And since you said there are various concepts,...what other cafes can we check out?
Well, now I want to talk about gallery cafes. People visit these coffee shops when they want to enjoy artworks and talk about them with others.
As you can see in the video,...paintings are lined up alongside the corridor.
You might wonder whether this place is an art gallery, but in fact, it's a coffee shop.
Customers say they like the idea that they can enjoy cultural life at a nearby coffee shop.
People usually go to art galleries to enjoy paintings, but I can enjoy them here with coffee. I came here to see the art with some drinks.
This place is divided into the exhibition section and the cafe section. Here, our customers can get some emotional healing through the artworks. The garden is also nice so I hope this place can be shared by many people.
The shop also sells the paintings, too,... the exhibition plans by different painters are updated.
Also, some groups regularly gather at the shop to read books together for a discussion.
So, now, the coffee shop is even functioning as a place to talk and learn.
Cool. And I guess it's because these cafes want to provide different services for their customers.
Right. In fact, cafes are changing into more different concepts, too, like study rooms.
So, it's already part of their marketing strategy. Take a listen to what an expert thinks.
There are already a number of cafes in Korea, so they have to be competitive. More coffee shops are changing into a nice place for a rest and a chat. They want to provide more premium services than other shops.
Experts say this trend will keep growing,... as there will be more and more demand from customers seeking quality service.
Well, that was useful information. As always, thanks, Jung-min.
My pleasure. Thank you, Mark.

In Motion: Yoon Hwan Bae and Umber Majeed Animation Screening
Evolving over more than a century, the medium of animation now encompasses a wide spectrum of techniques that range from by-hand styles to experimental moving image, from screen-based films to VR installations. All of these forms, however, continue to capture and reconstruct our surroundings, simultaneously confirming and questioning our perception of reality.
This screening and discussion featured two artists who use animation as part of their larger practice. Umber Majeed presented an excerpt from her The Atomically Explosive Love (2018) series and In The Name of Hypersurface of the Present (2018). Yoon Hwan Bae showed two stop-motion animations: Road to Studio B (2018) and Self-Portrait (2017). The conversation following the screenings explored the possibilities inherent in animation’s transdisciplinary nature, as well as how this medium shapes the artists’ narrative impulse.
Yoon Hwan BAE draws images of imagination and fantasy based on fables, art history, and mythology. While the narratives in his works, which range from small drawings to massive roll canvases, are frequently about his own identity, they also represent human life, desire, and relationship from multiple angles. Bae has held solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery New York (2018, New York, U.S.A.), Gallery Baton (2017, Seoul, Korea), DOOSAN Gallery Seoul (2017, Seoul, Korea), Space O’NewWall (2015, Seoul, Korea), Spacemom Museum of Art (2014, Cheongju, Korea), and Insa Art Space (2014, Seoul, Korea). He has also participated in group exhibitions at venues that include Seoul Museum of Art (2018, Seoul, Korea), Chapter II (2017, Seoul, Korea), Cheongju Museum of Art (2017, Cheongju, Korea), Suzhou Jinji Lake Art Museum (2016, Suzhou, China), and Seoul Olympic Museum of Art (2016, Seoul, Korea).
Umber Majeed is a multidisciplinary visual artist based between New York, USA and Lahore, Pakistan. Her writing, performance, and animation work engage with familial archives to explore the specifics of Pakistani state and urban infrastructure through a feminist lens. Majeed is a recipient of numerous fellowships including the HWP Fellowship, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut, Lebanon (2017) and Refiguring Feminist Futures – Web Residency, Akademie Schloss Solitude & ZKM, Germany (2018). She has shown in venues across Pakistan, North America, and Europe. Recent group exhibitions include; ‘Promises to Keep’, apexart, New York (2017), and ‘Witness- Karachi Biennale’, Karachi, Pakistan (2017), and ‘Volumes – Queens International’, Queens Museum, New York (2018). Her work has been acquired by several private collections, including the Lekha and Anupam Poddar Collection at the Devi Art Foundation in Gurgaon, India.
Art Edition Fair 2014 introduces diverse limited edition art pieces
복수의 에디션이 있
Korea′s largest art fair, devoted to introducing limited edition artwork opened on this Thursday afternoon.
Our Park Ji-won helps us take a sneak peak at the four-day exhibition.
Ranging from photos and woodcut prints to 3D computer art work,... this fair is all about art pieces... that have a limited number of editions.
Since 1995, the annual international art fair has invited a number of participants and guests from all over the world.
This year′s includes 51 galleries from 15 countries.
Those who visit will get close access to the artists themselves at exhibit booths.
My works are about the endless networks of our lives that inter-connect everyone. It looks like a plant, as plants represent the circles of life ,... from its creation to extinction.
In this project, I did a performance at a site near the Auschwitz camp, where people were shot, and I asked the audience of about three hundred people. I asked them to write down the names of the people they love and put them in candles, the candles went down to river to the ocean. So it became this kind of a celebration of life.
On the sidelines of the festival, diverse programs are being offered,... from artist talks and collaborative projects... to print-making classes.
The festival continues until this Sunday... at the Hangaram Art Museum of Seoul Arts Center.
PARK Ji-won, Arirang News.
[ART OF KOREA] SOL YOON KOREAN CRAFTS-CERAMICS ARTIST INTERVIEW
A circle is a shape that feels the most stable to human eyes. If lines were the first formative language used to express human emotions, a circle is the simplest yet the most complete form a line can create. For the past 20 years, SOL YOON has consistently explored circles as a running theme, incorporating various forms of spheres in his ceramic works. He produces various sized hollow spheres using a casting technique, then cuts into them to yield linear or curved sections and connects the shells piece by piece. The open sphere forms are stacked together or extended to create hyper-dimensional sculptures that inhabit the vitality and energy of autogenetic stem cells. The diameter of each sphere doesn’t exceed 40 centimeters—just the right size for the artist to wrap his arms around and wield his techniques. Scoring, cutting, attaching, and sanding dozens of sphere sections with a titanium knife in hand, the artist looks almost like a doctor holding a scalpel. With preliminary plans drawn out meticulously using computers, his works are like complicated surgeries that allow no room for mistake.

Art from Joseon Dynasty on display in two exhibitions
조선시대 작품 전시
One of the many ways that helps us understand history better... is studying the art of a particular time period.
Our Yim Yoon-hee profiles two exhibits that will give more insight into the Joseon Dynasty. One of the most precious treasures from the Joseon Dynasty -.... laquerware inlaid with mother of pearl.
The shimmering works of art were most commonly made during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties, and few authentic relics remain in Korea.
[KOREAN]
″The historical trend was to use motifs to make memorable paintings and drawings that can be appreciated in the future.″
The Horim Museum has recently gathered a collection of 90 pieces of Joseon Dynasty laquerware,... and they′re now on display for the people of Korea to enjoy.
Across the river, another museum is offering a look at a different aspect of the Joseon Dynasty′s art culture.
These timeless paintings open a window into peaceful, serene settings.
Works by legendary artists such as Kim Hong-do and Jeong Sun paved the way for modern and contemporary painters such as Cheongjeon Yi Sang-bom and Sojeong Byeon Kwon-sik .
[KOREAN]
″Cheongjeon Yi Sang-bom′s works are similar to something you would see from a camera′s angle. On the other hand, Sojeong Byeon Kwon-sik′s works transform the scene.″
30 masterpiece paintings done by artists of different styles, and from different periods in time, come together for this unique look into Korea′s history of painting.

Yongsung Kim Artist — Christian and Korean
More at
John Dye: Okay, we're here with Yongsung Kim.
Austen: Yes.
Yongsung: Yes.
John Dye: Yongsung, say hello.
Yongsung: Hi.
John Dye: And we're here with Austen, the translator.
Austen: Hi, yeah I'm here to help Kim Yongsung, since it's a little far from home for him.
John Dye: Wonderful. And Yongsung is from South Korea.
Yongsung: Yeah.
Austen: Yeah.
John Dye: Okay, what city?
Yongsung: From Seoul.
John Dye: Seoul.
Yongsung: From Seoul, yeah.
John Dye: Oh, in Seoul. Okay, wonderful. Can we look at your pieces behind you?
Yongsung: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
John Dye: Can we come back here?
Yongsung: Yeah.
Austen: [Korean 00:00:32]
John Dye: So Yongsung, the one I'm most familiar with is this piece.
Austen: [Korean 00:00:39]
Yongsung: Yeah.
John Dye: Yes, which is your most popular piece?
Austen: [Korean 00:00:47]
John Dye: This piece.
Yongsung: Hands of God.
John Dye: Okay. Very good.
Austen: Hand of God.
John Dye: Hand of God. Okay, yes. That's great. You also do a lot with sheep. The motif is sheep.
Austen: [Korean 00:01:01]
John Dye: And probably the lost sheep?
Austen: [Korean 00:01:05]
Yongsung: Yeah, yeah.
Austen: [Korean 00:01:07]
Yongsung: Yeah.
John Dye: Yeah, maybe explain why, why did you choose that motif?
Austen: [Korean 00:01:13]
Yongsung: [Korean 00:01:19]
Austen: So it's because Christ is our loving shepherd.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:01:21]
Austen: So just like it says in Psalms 10, there's the famous passage about him finding us.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:01:34]
Austen: And that he's even willing to give his life for us.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:01:38]
Austen: Very good person.
John Dye: Yeah, very good. Oh, that's wonderful.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:01:46]
Austen: Wherever you are-
Yongsung: [Korean 00:01:48]
Austen: ... you can meet again or be his lamb.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:01:50]
Austen: His loved lamb.
Yongsung: Yeah.
John Dye: Oh, wonderful. Thank you, thank you. Do you have a particular touching story behind one of these images that you'd like to share with us?
Austen: [Korean 00:02:05]
Yongsung: [Korean 00:02:13] Hand of God.
Austen: Probably the Hand of God.
John Dye: Can you share that with us?
Austen: [Korean 00:02:19]
Yongsung: Yeah. Peter [Korean 00:02:24]
Austen: So Peter's fallen in the water.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:02:27]
Austen: At that moment, Christ stretched out his hands, is pulling him up.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:02:34]
Austen: Even Peter, who did not have strong belief at that moment ...
Yongsung: [Korean 00:02:45]
Austen: ... he didn't say, Why don't you believe? Why are you in the water?
Yongsung: [Korean 00:02:49]
Austen: He didn't criticize him.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:02:54]
Austen: Even as he was sinking, he said, It's okay.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:02:59]
Austen: We can fix this.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:03:05]
Austen: I hope that when people see this, they'll notice that Peter isn't there because ...
Yongsung: [Korean 00:03:15]
Austen: I am Peter. I could be Peter.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:03:21]
Austen: So even if you feel like you're falling under water, you're drowning ...
Yongsung: [Korean 00:03:30]
Austen: ... those trials, those pains, that suffering ...
Yongsung: [Korean 00:03:35]
Austen: At that moment, I hope people feel like it's not Christ reaching his hand out to Peter, but to me.
Yongsung: Yeah.
John Dye: Yeah, very good.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:03:47]
Austen: If you just grab his hand, it'll all be okay.
Yongsung: [Korean 00:03:55]
Austen: Christ's hand.
Austen: So a lot of people talk to me through SNS, or through just different social media.
Austen: They'll tell me, I'm going through such-and-such difficult circumstances. I'm going through this trial.
Austen: And I'm despairing, I have no hope.
Austen: And the moment, I saw your picture and thought I too can grab Jesus' hand.
Austen: And that was through that painting I realized that.
Austen: Actually sometimes people think, you know, I've fallen in the water and sinking, like this is going to be my tomb.
Austen: I really am falling. I think I'm really going to die [crosstalk 00:04:58]
Austen: It was at that moment, seeing that painting, I realized that I could still grab the Savior's hand. He saved me.
Austen: So one teenager told him, one young adult told him, If it wasn't for your painting, I think I would be dead by now.
Austen: Maybe they were thinking of suicide at that time.
Austen: But at that time, they grabbed the hand of God, and he saved them.
Austen: And they said, Thank you for saving me.
Austen: So another family's going through a difficult time. There was troubles with the husband, and things weren't going well for their family. But it was through this, the idea that this painting represents, that they realized that they were still able to restore their family.
Austen: A lot of people look at [crosstalk 00:06:14]
Austen: They can see comfort, they can heal, and actually they can be restored completely.
John Dye: Very good.

Shin yun bok's korean people
Shin Yun-bok, better known by his pen name Hyewon, (born 1758) was a Korean painter of the Joseon Dynasty. Like his contemporaries Danwon and Geungjae, he is known for his realistic depictions of daily life in his time. His genre paintings are distinctly more erotic than Danwon's, a fact which contributed to his expulsion from the royal painting institute, Dohwaseo. Painting was frequently a hereditary occupation in the Joseon period, and Hyewon's father and grandfather had both been court painters. Together with Danwon and the later painter Owon, Hyewon is remembered today as one of the Three Wons of Joseon-period painting.
Not much is known about Shin Yun-bok's life. He was the son of royal court painter Hanpyeong, who had participated in painting the royal portraits of Yeongjo and Jeongjo. Hyewon reached the official rank of cheomjeoljesa at the Dohwaseo and was adept at different styles of painting; genre, landscape, and animals. It is speculated that he left a great number of paintings due to the popularity of genre paintings during that era.
There are different studies and theories regarding his life, that he may not have ever been a member of the Dohwaseo nor was he on close terms with Kim Hong-do. Shin Yun-bok, despite being greatly influenced and overshadowed by Kim Hong-do during his career, developed his own unique technique and artistry. Along with Kim Hong-Do, he is known foremost for his genre paintings of the Joseon era. Whereas Kim depicted everyday life of peasants with a humorous touch, Shin showed glimpses of eroticism in his paintings of townspeople and gisaeng. His choice of characters, composition, and painting method differed from Kim's, with use of bright colors and delicate paint strokes. He also painted scenes of shamanism and townlife, offering insight to lifestyle and costumes of the late Joseon era.
His ink landscape paintings used clear light strokes in a method similar to that of Yoon Jehong, the pioneer in new style painting of the late Joseon era. He is also known to not have used the traditional method of leaving empty space in his paintings, usually filling the whole canvas. Although he placed short verse and his seal on most of his paintings, none indicate the date nor time of their creation and it is difficult to define the progression of his painting style. As one of the pillars of genre painting in the Joseon era, he influenced many other painters afterwards.
His album, Hyewon Pungsokhwacheop, contains 30 of his paintings and was designated the 135th National Treasure of South Korea in 1970.
Portrait of a Beauty : Painting on silk. Depicts the standard of traditional beauty in the Joseon era. Realistic details of the hanbok are notable.
Dano day : Painting on paper. Depicts a scene on Dano day; semi-nudes bathing in the stream, a woman in a bright red hanbok rides a swing, two young monks peek in the background.

봄에 볼만한 전시, 국립현대미술관 젊은 모색전 및 화랑미술제
With the weather feeling more spring-like with each passing day, you may want to check out some nice art exhibitions during this weekend.
Our cultural correspondent Park Jiwon brings us a glimpse of two such exhibits that have always been the buzz this time of the year.
New visions, new voices is one of the longest-running, signature exhibitions at the National Museum of Contemporary Art.
Beginning back in 1981, the exhibition began introducing experimental works by young artists on a biannual basis.
Nine artists have their works currently on display, ranging from photography and painting to installation art.
These days, young artists tend to be oriented toward experience, relationship, and process.
Young artists, as members of society, actively seek out relationships with others through their works.
Sometimes their works necessitate random participation from others, resulting in unexpected art pieces.
These photos by Kim Taedong , for example, portray random people the artist encountered on the streets of Korea.
Visual artist Baek Jungki printed these photographs using polluted water from the Han River.
As the river and the city are ecologically linked, I used the water of the Han as an ink to print cityscapes on litmus paper.
I'd like to visualize the ecological relationship between Seoul and the Han River.
The New visions, new voices exhibition continues until June.
Another exhibition that opened this week is The Korea Galleries Art Fair.
It's Korea's oldest fine art fair, and got its start in the late 1970s.
It features some 3-thousand works by over 200 artists from 80 galleries.
This year's art fair focuses on young artists affiliated with each gallery.
This art fair will show the current trend of contemporary art in Korea.
By the end of the fair on Sunday, it's expected that about 600 works will have been sold to the tune of about 3-point-5 million U.S. dollars.
