The Yorkshire Air Museum is a registered charity (No. 516766). It receives no state or local government aid and is a not-for-profit business.
It is a fully registered museum (No. 66) under the Museum Accreditation scheme established by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (part of the Department of Culture Media & Sport), who operates strict guidelines about how artefacts are conserved and kept as part of our nation’s heritage.
The Museum is a living memorial to all allied air forces personnel particularly those during the Second World War, and especially the tens of thousands of young people who gave their lives in that conflict. We aim to be relevant to present day generations by explaining, in a realistic way, what life was like on a typical wartime bomber station, as well as displaying the history of aviation.
Yorkshire has a particular place in aviation, both historically and present day. From Sir George Cayley, the world renowned Father of Aeronautics, to present day aircraft manufacturerers. We are justly proud of the region’s heritage, and throughout the site you can explore aspects of design and technology dating from the 1850s right up to the present day.
All of these make The Yorkshire Air Museum an exciting attraction. But it is the reaction of our visitors, who love the ambience and unhurried atmosphere whether it is in our restaurant or shop, our restoration workshops or our displays which make it such an excellent day out.
Our World War Two Aircraft collection is probably best know for our Handley Page Halifax “Friday The 13th”. But our collection extends beyond this famous aircraft to encompass the Second World War aircraft as diverse as the Spitfire and the WACO glider, towed behind Allied bombers and crewed by courageous troops. Our Douglas Dakota served around the globe before retiring to live in our Canadian Hangar. Below are details of the aircraft from this period, click each link for more information.
Alongside the collection of Cold War Aircraft, we have a collection of both civilian and military aircraft from the period after the Second World War. As jet technology advanced snd civilian light aircraft production resumed, these aircraft were everyday sights and sounds in the skies in the period since that time.
Our constantly growing collection of Pre World War Two Aircraft is complemented by our new Pioneers of Aviation exhibition in 2010. Below is the current list of the Museum Pre World War Two Aircraft you will see when visiting us.
Apart from historic aircraft, vehicles and buildings, our Collection includes over 250,000 smaller items including artefacts, uniforms, documents, records, photographs, books and films which are preserved and researched by our Curatorial Staff. The Collection also includes records and items from the national Air Gunners Association and the national Air Crew Association.
The main Archive is located in a modern purpose built building with the latest environmental controls and secure storage facilities. The new building which was opened on 24th July 2013, is designed to blend in with the existing wartime structures and we are grateful to the Air Crew Association Archive Trust who contributed over £200,000 towards the construction and fitting-out of the aptly named “A.C.A. Building”. (Formed in 1977, the Air Crew Association, with ACM “Bomber” Harris as its first president, had over 22,000 members, mainly of World War Two veterans. The Association was eventually wound up in December 2011 although their work still continues today through the work of the ACA Archive Trust, which continues to help preserve records and documents of the era in partnership with the Yorkshire Air Museum).
Like any museum, our exhibits are in a constant state of flux, with aircraft being restored and refurbished, while other more fragile exhibits often need protection from the winter weather. We always strive to make as many of our aircraft, vehicles and buildings as accessible as possible to visitors. If there is any particular aircraft you are especially interested in seeing, it is sometimes worth checking in winter months with our staff to be sure that the exhibits aren’t being worked on.

The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial is an air museum in England on the site of the former RAF Elvington airfield. The Yorkshire Air Museum was founded, and first opened to the public, in the early 1980s.
The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial is the largest independent air museum in Britain and is the most original Second World War RAF Bomber Command station open to the public. It is also the only Allied Air Forces Memorial in Europe. The museum has a good international reputation and profile with established branches in Canada and France and is supported by over 4,000 registered friends across the world. It is a Corporate Member of Friends of the Few (Battle of Britain Memorial) and the Royal Aeronautical Society.
The President of the Museum/Memorial is Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton and Vice Presidents include; the Chief of the Air Staff, Sir Andrew Pulford; Chief of the French Air Force, General Andre Lanata; Supreme Allied Commander NATO, General Denis Mercier; Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu; and TV Presenter, Jan Leeming.
Yorkshire Air Museum principal activity is in education and the history of flight, through which it is involved with aerospace manufacturers and organisations via its long term Reach for the Sky project which delivered the first KS2 History of Aviation educational resource book to all 26,000 primary schools in UK, supported by RAeS and the Ministry of Transport.
The Yorkshire Air Museum has around 50 aircraft spanning the development of aviation from 1853 up to the latest GR4 Tornado. Several aircraft including Victor, Nimrod, Buccaneer, Sea Devon, SE5a, Eastchurch Kitten; DC3 Dakota; are kept live and operated on special Thunder Days during the year. Over 20 historic vehicles and a Registered Archive containing over 500,000 historic artefacts and documents are also preserved at the Museum, which is also the Official Archive for the National Aircrew Association and National Air Gunners Association. It is nationally registered and accredited through DCMS/Arts Council England and is a registered charity.

The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial, (RAF Elvington airfield during the Second World War), is an air museum in England. The Museum was founded, and first opened to the public, in the early 1980s.

Principal on-site businesses include: Restaurant, Publishing, Retail Shop, Operational Fire Service, Events, Aircraft Operation Engineering Workshops, Archives and Corporate Business Suite. The Museum produces its own films and publications and is also a popular location for TV and film companies.
Spring Thunder Day 2018 at Yorkshire Air Museum
On Sunday 29th April, The Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington near York in Yorkshire held their Spring Thunder Day event where certain aircraft in their collection come to life once again.

Yorkshire Air Museum: In this UK travel vlog we visit Yorkshire Air Museum located near York, England. If you are looking for things to do in York, we think Yorkshire Air Museum is certainly worth a day trip. Please note the air museum is set on the outskirts of the city of York, on the former RAF Elvington airfield - a Second World War RAF Bomber Command station. Today it is one of the largest independent aviation museums in the country, and houses historic aircrafts, vehicles, and exhibits within restored original ww2 buildings.
Yorkshire Air Museum have a large aircraft collection spanning the history of manned aviation: from the early days of flight, to world war 1 and 2, and through the cold war era. Particularly impressive was the Hadley Page Halifax inside the Canadian Memorial Hangar.
The museum also contained numerous fascinating exhibits, including he fascinating ‘against the odds’ exhibition, which tells the story of the famous bomber command, the 77 squadron history room, filled with photographs of the squadron’s time at the air base, and the 1930s astra cinema, which shows short films throughout the day.
Admission to visit Yorkshire Air Museum was £12 per adult and £5 per child (free under 5), and they are open every day of the year except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Blackburn Buccaneer S.2 powered by twin Rolls Royce Spey Turbofans, it is not airworthy and is only allowed to taxi around. The other Plane is a de Havailland Devon with two de Havilland Gypsy Queens. They also ran the Nimrod powered by 4 Rolls Royce Speys with the Handley Page Victor had a broken starter motor so was out of action for the day
