Hiroshima Okonomiyaki Lunch Experiment 広島焼き ★ ONLY in JAPAN #19
New Episode! Hiroshima Street Food on Miyajima:
Hiroshima is one of Japan's top destinations, and when you're hungry, you have to try okonomiyaki. Hiroshima has it's own original style, and it's not so simple to make.
John travels to Okonomimura, a building full of Okonomiyaki shops, for lunch. There are many different toppings you can put on okonomiyaki. In many ways, it's like a pizza! In other ways, it's like a sandwich.
Taste is a personal preference so John experiments. With the help of a friend and the shop master, he puts one together.
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is much different than Osaka's version. Osaka is more like a pancake with everything thrown into the batter. Hiroshima's is layered and takes time. The result is a more complex tasting meal. It's not just Hiroshima's soul food, it's super healthy and fun to eat.
About Okonomimura: It's a top destination for locals and tourists alike. It's packed with shops on 3 floors each with it's own recommended variety. Prices for okonomiyaki range from 800 yen to 1380 yen depending on toppings and ingredients.
Give it a try!

Adeyto ⛩️ MIYAJIMA Omotesando Shopping Arcade Traditional ITSUKUSHIMA SHAMOJI Rice Scoop Hiroshima
Finally we get to see the bustling shopping street of Miyajima with countless SPOONS in all sizes and we will see all but one: Located in the Omotesando shopping street in Miyajima is what is said to be the largest wooden rice scoop in the world. Some 7.7 meters long, 2.7 meters thick and 2.5 tonnes it is said to be made from 270 year old Zelkova tree. The scoop took almost three years to construct and went on display in 1996 to commemorate the designation of Itsukushima Shrine as a World Heritage Site.
However, as in the case with many of the “world’s largest,” the largeness of the scoop is less interesting than that it represents a kind of collective pride by the people of Miyajima in an object that has helped put their island on the map.
As the legend goes, between the 1790s and 1800s a Buddhist monk named Seishin lived and worked in the Tokidera Temple. One night he dreamed of a deity known as Benzaiten, the Japanese name for the Indian goddess Saraswati, whose myth arrived in Japan via the Chinese and began being worshiped in the 6th century. She held a traditional Japanese lute which the monk saw as a kind of spoon. Upon awakening he showed the people of Miyajima how to make this magical rice scoop or “shamoji” he had dreamed of.
In Japan, Miyajima is quite famous for its rice scoops, and though now the scoops sold on the island are made with foreign timber (Miyajima has little native wood) the scoops still come with a stamp with the Chinese characters for ‘Miyajima’. These days most of the practical shamoji sold are made from white plastic or cheap plywood, the island sells many higher grade shamoji to tourists who keep them as spiritual and good luck items.

Episode 4:
The third episode from my multi-part Japan Rail Series — a visual journey showcasing a variety of destinations during a 21-day rail itinerary across Japan. With an emphasis on capturing photography and video of aesthetic locations during the winter time, this journey aims to inspire people to visit the beautiful urban and rural destinations of Japan!
This is probably the most chilled section of our Japan Rail Series. Starting with a brief stop in Nagoya at the SCMAGLEV Museum, to learn about the development of the Shinkansen (Japanese bullet train) and the future of the Superconductive MagLev train (SCMAGLEV) set to launch in around 10 years time between Tokyo and Nagoya.
Our journey then continued onto Kinosaki Onsen, one of Japan's most popular onsen towns, located remotely from other major cities in the West of Honshu, the main island of Japan. We had an exceptionally warm welcome from our host and enjoyed exploring the hot spring baths in our traditional Yukatas for the night.
This episode finishes in Kyoto, where I held a meet-up event and photowalk. Unfortunately, Elly's grandmother fell ill during these days so she had to return to Tokyo whilst I stayed in Kyoto. We then managed to squeeze in a bit of exploration around the canal area, before moving on to our next destination, for the next episode!
This whole trip and itinerary were planned and paid for independent of any tourism boards or businesses. The locations and accommodations are our genuine preferences and recommendations, as standard across the content on this channel. World's Most Beautiful Starbucks ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Where is the world's most beautiful Starbucks? Japan, of course.
In Toyama city's Kansui Park is a shop that has won awards for it's design, but it's also the location that makes it beautiful. Those big windows overlook a lake in a park, the building resting upon grass, surrounded by sakura trees. The fresh air off the sea of Japan and the beautiful sunsets over the nearby Japanese Alps can't be forgotten. I could sip a hot cappuccino all day here.
But wait! Starbucks newest shop in Kyoto (Ninenzaka) is a traditional tea house that looks centuries old! It's hard to tell it's a Starbucks until you see the sign. Inside, it's like going back in time. You definitely feel Kyoto's historical vibe sitting on tatami sipping macha tea ... lattes. This may also be the world's most beautiful shop.
Hakodate in Hokkaido is home to what many consider to be the coziest Starbucks in the world. It's got a fireplace, wide open rooms and stairs, natural hard wood floors and a beautiful deck that overlooks Hakodate Bay. It's super cozy!
Yeah, visiting Starbucks is certainly one attraction for many visitors because it seems more than just a chain coffee shop. To me, it a reflection of the world around us -- and a really good cup of coffee.
THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED VIDEO.
I made this episode from a suggestion from a viewer in 2016 :) I also like Starbucks Japan because it's the only cafe chain that is non-smoking and has excellent coffee.
LOCATIONS featured in this video:
★ Toyama Kansui Park
★ Hakodate Bayside
☆ Shibuya Tsutaya
☆ Omotesando / Harajuku Tokyu Plaza
☆ Okachimachi
☆ Tokyo Yaesu Sakura Dori
☆ Akihabara
☆ Ueno Onishi Parek
★ Kyoto Nineizaka Yasaka Chaya
Historical note: The first Starbucks in Japan was opened in Ginza in 1996 and is located here.
It is being renovated until August 2017.

???????? FOLLOW ME TO JAPAN | Osaka, Kyoto, Nara (Japan Vlog #1) ????????
Follow me to Japan ! Welcome to my Japan Travel Vlog! In December 2017, I went to Japan with my family, exploring Osaka, Kyoto and Nara (staying in the Kansai region). This is my second trip to Japan and it was just as magical as the first. Some highlights of my trip were the food (Yes, 100 yen sushi train was my favourite thing to eat in Japan), as well as the culture such as hiring a yukata (or kimono) whilst exploring the beauty of Gion.
I was also lucky enough to be in Japan the day that BTS's Japanese single/album Crystal Snow / MIC Drop / DNA came out so I encountered the BTS truck not once, but TWICE in different places in Japan (cookie for whoever spots the truck in this video!) AND I also stumbled across the BTS POP-UP Store in Shibuya 109 which I was incredibly excited about.

*How do I get to Kanazawa from Tokyo?*
Traveling from Tokyo to Kanazawa only takes 2.5 hours. In March 2015, the Nagano Shinkansen line opened a new train that runs to Kanazawa station. It’s called Hokuriku Shinkansen. I went from Nagano to Kanazawa which only took a little over one hour.
*21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art*
The free part of the museum is an exhibit on cloth. You can feel the different materials used to make a piece of cloth. I believe the exhibit that is offered for free changes all the time. The outside of the museum has pretty interesting pieces you can look at.
*Kanazawa has cherry blossoms!*
If you missed the cherry blossoms you can still catch the Yaezakura cherry blossoms! It is a multi-layered cherry blossom. Because of the different layers the colors range from light to dark pink.
*Things to Do in Kanazawa*
1) When in Kanazawa, you have to try gold leaf ice cream. Kanazawa produces 99% of all gold leaf in Japan.
2) Kanazawa also has a rich tradition of making amazing craft items. This stems from the 15th century where samurai used to rule the land. They didn’t have any wars to fight and were rich in food and land, so they decided to invest many of their resources into arts and crafts.
Today, Kanazawa has over 400 legendary craftsmen dedicated to 36 different types of arts and crafts. Gold leaf, fireworks, umbrellas and fishing lures are some of the specialties of the area.
3) Chaya Area is a lovely neighborhood of beautifully preserved geisha houses. Many have now been converted into restaurants or teahouses. This place reminded me of Gion in Kyoto. Like here it is also a famous geisha district.
4) Kanazawa Castle
From 1583 to the end of the Edo Period, Kanazawa Castle was the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan, a feudal land second only to the Tokugawa’s lands in terms of size and wealth.
The original castle was burnt down and I didn’t bother to pay to go inside. There isn’t much inside compared to Matsumoto castle. If you haven’t seen my trip to Matsumoto remember to go check that out.
Kanazawa Castle Hours
7:00 to 18:00 (March 1 to October 15)
8:00 to 17:00 (October 16 through February)
5) Kanazawa Tea Ceremony
If you want a real tea ceremony experience, they have one here.
This exquisite private garden and tea house was reconstructed based on the original floor plans and opened in 2015. It’s one of the prettiest places in Japan in my opinion, and drinking matcha tea in the tea house while looking out at the view is a special experience.
On Friday and Saturday nights, they open the garden and light it up. I didn’t get to do that this trip but I read that it is a beautiful sight.
6) Omnicho Market
I couldn’t just leave without experiencing this market. So before I left Kanazawa, I had to stop by this market to take a look.
This place reminds me of Nishiki market in Kyoto, just not as big and crowded. It’s also maze like with a bunch of small coordinators snaking around everywhere.
I loved the big, raw oysters here. You can add your sauces on it and it only costs 500 yen. I also got the calm which was disappointing and fishy.
7) Eat Kanazawa Curry
I came here because it was conveniently located inside Kanazawa train station and Go Go curry is a famous brand. I’ve never tried Kanazawa styled curry before. Kanazawa curry has some specific attributes: it needs to be thick and gooey and is often sweet. It’s served with shredded cabbage and curry entirely covers the rice. It’s traditionally eaten in a stainless steel bowl and a fork and a spoon (or even a spork).

JAPAN Part 3 Takayama a Beautiful City in Gifu Prefecture Central Honshu
Music - Komputo, Hanagoyomi, Cast of Pods & Ferris Wheel , Courtesy of YouTube Music Library.
So, here we have Part 3 of our Japanese holiday tour of Central Honshu. We take the Shinkansen, and The bullet train does not disappoint! What a fantastic way to travel, this was a big thrill for me!
On arrival in Takayama, a city 1900ft in the hills, we head for dinner in a traditional Japanese restaurant - YUM!
Next day we have a walking tour of Takayama's hi-lights. This place is a photographers paradise, so I'm snapping away like crazy. The buildings are beautiful and so atmospheric and well, so Japanese! Sadly by early afternoon, it starts to rain again, but I keep on shooting, often under an umbrella! We enter the Festival Float museum, but have missed the the spectacular procession by about 10 days sadly!
Anyway, Part 4 will feature the Gassho-style houses of Shirakawa-go, a Unesco World Heritage Site. However, the weather, once again, is not looking good!

Kyoto's Japanese-Style Starbucks Opening & Look Inside
Kyoto's newest Starbucks at Ninenkaza is arguably the most beautiful in the world! It retains the old historical feel of the Higashiyama area -- with good coffee, of course! This area of Japan doesn't have many foreign owned chains, Starbucks may be the first, so they've gone to great length to make sure the building, decor fit in.
スターバックス コーヒー京都二寧坂ヤサカ茶屋店
素敵な建物です!
Visitors must remove their shows when going into some of the rooms, especially on the tatami. The store fits 55 people but since the tatami is seat less, a few more may be able to cram in.
The store is one way movement meaning you order your coffee when you enter, walk through the corridor to the back of the first floor and wait for your drink by a Japanese garden outside the window. There are some seats on the first floor but most visitors go to the second floor, up the steps after receiving their coffee. Once you go up, you can't return down again the same way.
There is a bee hive that the store preserved. It was in the old building so they kept it and it's seen through a glass window in the ceiling on the 2nd floor.
The store features:
★ Tamami
★ Small room
★ Japanese decorations
★ Beautiful wood counters and tables

RinaPhie in Japan 1: Off to Kyoto! Visiting Yasaka Shrine & Kiyomizudera.
Hello guys! Thanks for coming back! ^_^
Here's some things you gotta know about this video:
- This video is from spring 2 years ago, when I traveled to Japan with my friend Sophie. I finally got around to editing xD
- Our native language is German, and we both speak English and Japanese as well. But we're still learning, so mistakes are bound to happen. Please don't mind them ;)
- These are just some videos we took while being there with the intention of maybe uploading them, but we're obviously no professional vloggers so the camerawork isn't the best. Hope you can still enjoy! :)
Here's what this video contains:
- us arriving in Shinagawa + introduction
- walking to Gion, Yasaka shrine
- Higashiyama
- Kiyomizudera
- lots of foodgasms from Sophie ;)
There'll be more videos coming up, so please check them out if you're interested! Feel free to comment and ask questions too!
Thanks for watching! ♡

Japanese Drive-Thru Sushi & Ramen Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japan is a country of convenience, and if you have a car, you'll find loads of restaurants outside the cities offering drive thru service.
What's unique is more than the food - sushi, ramen, gyudon, fast food - it's the reason why Japanese go to a drive thru.
So, who are the customers that visit Japanese drive thru?
★ Families with children so they can stay in their car
★ Easy Take Away Pickup to eat at home
★ The disabled who can't enter the restaurant
Nearly all people take the food home to be eaten and don't eat in their cars according to restaurant owners.

Kyoto Restaurant Tour Experience | Gion at Night ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Kyoto, Japan. Think food. Lots of food! That's dining out in the city and Gion is the place to be at night. Tempura, Tofu, Ramen, Wagyu Steaks, Sushi, Sashimi, Sukiyaki, Grilled Fish ... it's endless! All with some of the best Japanese sake in the land! I haven't even gotten to the desserts!
Now close your eyes ー imagine beautiful Japanese streets lined with hundreds of wooden tea houses, red paper lanterns, bamboo -- and Geisha floating by. That's where we are going!
For first time visitors to Japan, knowing Japanese is often important to get the full dining experience. Although I can speak Japanese, I was alone so I decided to book a tour with a local guide.

Gion & downtown Kyoto, Japan travel video
Most visitors to Kyoto, Japan are here to enjoy the temples, gardens and the historic sites but you'll also find that downtown Kyoto is very appealing. It's a busy modern shopping area that features a couple of major boulevards, several large department stores and smaller pedestrian-only streets, and there’s many blocks of boutiques and restaurants, cafés and thousands of local residents filling the sidewalks.
Near the Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto you'll find the most famous downtown historic neighborhood, Gion, the neighborhood of the geisha or as they say in Kyoto, the geiko. And the little side streets are where you want to venture to see the really charming part of old Kyoto.
Hanamikoji is the main side street in Gion where you're most likely to run into some geisha. Keep in mind you want to be polite and considerate when you see a geisha, or geiko as they are called in Kyoto.
The primary commercial street here is Shijo dori and it's always very busy, full of shops and pedestrians and there's a lot of cars, a lot of traffic going by. We’ll show you more of this in a few minutes, including a covered shopping mall, but it’s kind of nice to get away from the busy streets and into the side lanes.
Be sure to also walk a few blocks north along Kiyamachi to reach the charming little canal that winds its way above and below Shijo-dori.
