WALKING IN THE CENTER OF VLADIVOSTOK RUSSIA.ЦЕНТР, НАБЕРЕЖНАЯ ВЛАДИВОСТОКА
VladivostokTalk was walking in the center of Vladivostok
Taking a stroll through the city center, it is impossible to walk past Vladivostok’s Arbat – the so-called pedestrian section of Admiral Fokin Street – as it is one of the favorite places of Vladivostok residents and tourists alike. In the nineties, due to the many kiosks and stalls selling cheap Chinese consumer goods there, the street was dubbed simply Commercial or “Shopping Street.”
However, in the new century, it transformed; the atmosphere itself changed on the street – which descends directly to the sea, into the Sports Harbor. Sparkling fountains, distinctive raised garden beds, and convenient benches appeared. The historic buildings along the street house cozy cafes, trendy shops, and budget hostels.
The Arbat has already established its own traditions: friends get together here; business meetings are conducted and romantic rendezvous take place. In the summer, there are often street performers, and the interior courtyards of “Millionka” – the preserved environs of the early 20th century Chinatown – surely attract fans of historical arcana and oriental exoticism.
Going further down the Arbat will bring you directly onto the “Sport Harbor” Promenade. It is quite possible to dedicate a few hours taking a leisurely walk through this area. The central city beach, a marina with sailboats, the sea breeze, and the outline of Sandy Cape on the other side of the bay – are all there at your disposal.
Strolling along the shore, you can get your portrait done by one of Vladivostok’s remarkable artists, who will complete it literally within thirty minutes. Be sure to keep your eye out for Tiger Alley – where on thirteen stone tiles tiger tracks are depicted and the names are written of the countries where these rare cats currently live. The presence of such an alley makes complete sense given that Primorye is Amur (Siberian) Tiger country.
If you are traveling with children, check out the amusement park. There is a carousel and bumping cars for kids, as well as a Ferris wheel that offers a beautiful view of the harbor and downtown. Looking out at Vladivostok from on high, you will see for yourself how hills grace the landscape that this city is spread across.
Just a few steps away from the waterfront is the aquarium (oceanarium) where two exhibition halls are located. (In the first) displayed in glass cases, are collections of seashells, corals, sponges, fish, and a variety of marine animals. In the large round hall, inhabitants of Far Eastern freshwater reservoirs, Peter the Great Bay, and tropical seas are apportioned in thirteen aquaria. In four cold-water aquariums, denizens of the Seas of Japan and Okhotsk are distributed.
To the left of the Oceanarium begins a sweeping staircase that leads to the Vladivostok Fortress Museum. This unique historical site will be intriguing to anyone interested in the naval history of the Russian Far East. The museum also contains a rare collection of bricks produced in Primorskiy factories in the early 20th century.
The walls of the buildings surrounding this square became a platform for the works of world-famous graffiti artists. In 2013, American Gabriel Spector depicted a DNA molecule as a symbol of the connection among all people on Earth. Japanese artist Yuma created black and white graffiti with the words Underwater Party. And New York painter Gaia drew a bright tiger on the wall, protected by human hands. Adjacent to the square is the bar Mumiy Troll – definitely go in there if you want to hear music with great club sound. The cuisine here, by the way, is multinational.

Molom - Legend of Mongolia (part 6 of 9)
Molom, conte de Mongolie (original title)
MOLOM-A LEGEND OF MONGOLIA
-By Renfreu Neff
Molom-A Legend of Mongolia - majestic is its backdrop of sweeping vistas and the rugged terrain of Mongolia a country little known to Westerners. The magical story of the shaman priest Molom, told in voice-over narration by his young apprentice Yonden, is as magical in its simplicity and subtle shadings as the mountains and steppes across which the two travel.
Abandoned by his father, a drunken Wolf Hunter, the boy Yonden lives with a wolf pack in the remote vastness of Mongolia. He is discovered by a wandering shaman Molom who, observing that the boy possesses certain auspicious characteristics, takes him on as his apprentice. They set out on a journey of discovery across mountainous territory peopled by nomadic clans and herders, wrestlers and storytellers. They encounter a band of drunken horsemen, a snaggletoothed sorceress, and a contest of holy men representing the spiritual philosophies of the world, all vying for the soul of a far-flung nomadic culture. They stop at sacred places, and Molom tells the story of the wondrous city of Shambhala, which they will visit.
This is the story of how Buddhism came to the Genghis Khan's ancient kingdom of Mongolia, which is now an independent republic ten times the size of Texas with a population of only six million, a raggedy, elliptical land of mountain and desert, browed to the north by Russia with China bordering to the east, south and west. Geographically separated by thousands of miles of barren stretches of Gobi Desert and towering Himalayan ranges that lie within China, the Buddhism practiced in Mongolia is, oddly enough, the same as that practiced in Tibet. In the Tibetan-Mongol Buddhist teachings, Shambhala is one of the heaven realms (but, alas, it is not perfect: to be reborn in Shambhala is to live only 100 years). The Shangri-La of Lost Horizon is a literary borrowing from the sacred myth of Shambhala. On another level, Shambhala is a metaphysical blueprint for a utopian paradise: the perfect society in which human suffering has ceased to exist. Shambhala is symbolized by the pearl, which is said to be contained within the heart. To get to the pearl-that is, to reach Shambhala-the heart must be opened.
None of this is easy. But Marie Jaoul de Poncheville's film makes it wondrously accessible, and her two characters-12-year-old Yondejunai, who lives with his family of nomads in a valley in Central Mongolia, and Tseded, at 75, one of the great actors of Mongolian cinema (over 50 films) and theatre (over 200 plays) and well-known on his country's radio and television-are thoroughly enjoyable traveling companions. Jacques Besse's gently luminous cinematography makes Mongolia appear to be a magical earthy realm, as the two make their way from the remote nether regions and arrive at last, with a playful irony that catches us up in our own misconceptions and illusions, in the city of Ulan Bator, where Molom entrusts his young pupil to a monastery to complete his education.
In the end Yonden shares with us his view of life. Wonder, Love and a Open Heart.

HANDEL & The Mermaids (Sirènes) of Victor NIZOVTSEV -( Russian Painter )-Water Music Suite N°1
Music : HANDEL
Water Music : Suite No. 1 in F major, HWV 348: I. Overture: Largo - Allegro - Andrew Mogrelia & Prague
**********
Victor NIZOVTSEV -Biography
Victor Nizovtsev is a masterful oil painter of theatrical figurative composition, fantasy, landscapes, and still life. While his professional art training occurred in Russia, as an artist Victor is a student of rich and diverse experiences. Inspiration for Victor’s art comes from all he sees and touches. It can be Greek mythology, Russian folklore, childhood memories, great Masters of the past, or routine daily life.
Victor’s art can be highly symbolic with hidden clues to help decipher the images. His work can also be humbly simple with images and subjects of universal appeal. They can be equally viewed for their vibrant textured colors that fill the canvas and contrast with the translucent glazes that make the paintings dance with light and pull in those who view it. Victor breathes life into each work inviting the viewer into the painting as a separate universe, one filled with boldness, energy and rich hues.
Victor Nizovtsev was born in 1965 in Central Siberia, in the city of Ulan-Ude near Lake Baikal. When Victor was a little boy his family moved from the Russian Federation to the Republic of Moldova. Victor grew up in Kotovsk, a town located in the heart of the region’s wine country and 30 miles southeast of the capital of Moldova, Chisinau.
At age nine he entered Kotovsk’s Art School for Children where he studied for four years. In the 9th grade, he left home to study at Ilia Repin College for Art in Chisinau. He then studied at the prestigious Vera Muhina University for Industrial Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. Upon graduation in 1993 Victor returned to Kotovsk where he began painting professionally. In 1997 Victor moved to the United States where he successfully continued pursuing his art career. In 2004 Victor moved from Washington, D.C. to Maryland where he resides with his wife and young daughter.
In his short time in the United States Victor has enjoyed a high degree of success, exhibiting in numerous solo and group shows with collectors excited to find and acquire his unique and imaginative paintings.
McBride Gallery is pleased to showcase the work of this talented Russian-American artist.
