泸沽湖 Lugu Lake Travel VLOG (Yunnan/Sichuan, China)
Video of our Nov-2017 self-drive trip to Lugu Lake (泸沽湖) in southwest China.

Lugu Lake is located in a mountainous region which is about 200km from Lijiang City (丽江市). It is an alpine lake famed for its spectacular scenery and is home to the Mosuo minority ethnic group.
Adminitstratively, Lugu Lake sits on the border between Yunnan (云南) and Sichuan (四川) Province. With 2/3 of it in Yunnan and 1/3 in Sichuan.
Lugu Lake sits at an elevation of 2685m, making it the highest lake in Yunnan Province. Ringed by mountains on all sides, the panoramic lake has 4 peninsulas, 5 islands, 14 bays and an impressive 17 beaches.
The lake has long been home to the local Mosuo people, whom are widely recognised to be the last matriarchal society in the world. Thus, Lugu Lake is also commonly refered to as “The Kingdom of Women”, “Home of the Matriarchal Tribe” and “Women’s World”.

Where we stayed:
We slept at the Zen Garden Hotel. The room was a littlebit disappointing for the price, but you also pay for the great location in the middle of the old town! And eventually the bed was good. Cookies are amazing, hotel staff is friendly, and just walking out the door you walk into the old town. The common room is very beautiful.

My Travel vlog series of China Travel with mostly Night shots of Lijiang Old town and Lijiang bars and night life, a detour to Black dragon Pool and the top of the hill pagoda with mountains in the background as backdrop. Later I jump on a bus going towards Shangrila but jump off at the Tiger Leaping gorge, go down the ravine and leap across!

Visited Lijiang, China during March 2018. Its a place where its cooling and cold throughout the year. During my visit its considered Spring. During the day the temperature is around 18°C and night around 3°C.

YUNNAN: China's Hidden Gem
We fell in love with the Yunnan Province during our visit! We are so glad we decided to use Lijiang as a base to see a small fraction of this magnificent corner of China. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain was the most beautiful mountain I have ever seen. Going into the mountain park is an absolute MUST if you travel to Yunnan.
If you decide to visit Tiger Leaping Gorge, we'd recommend that you go for 2-3 days to hike through the mountains on the trail and end up down at the gorge. We didn't have enough time to see the gorge/area this way, but we will for sure do it next time.
We mentioned briefly in the video that we stayed in Shuhe Old Town, which is about a 15 minute cab ride away from Lijiang. While we enjoyed staying there, for ease of getting around to see as much as you can on your trip, we'd definitely recommend staying in Lijiang's Old Town. You can easily access buses and cabs from there.

Kunming is located in the Chinese province of Yunnan in southwest China.The Buddhist temple of Ykan Ton Si dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The design of the city’s largest temple complex was influenced by many diverse ethnic groups. The highlight of the complex is a lake in the middle of which a number of bridges lead to an octagonal pavilion. The Temple of Total Penetration (yes, that’s its name!) is a tranquil and peaceful haven amid the busy alleys of Kunming’s old town.In the west of Yunnan Province, there are magnificent views from Xi Shan Mountain. Across Dianchi Lake and nestled among the rocks are numerous temples that were once the scene of ritual sacrifice. On the downward journey, the temples loom larger and larger while earthenware images of Buddha depict various stages of life.Yunnan’s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest of Shilin. Its limestone rock originated from a long since dried–up ocean, when the elements set to work on creating its fantastic and bizarre forms. The most amazing formations were given dramatic names such as The Sea of Fire, Dragon’s Tooth and Heavenly Sword. Pagodas, columns and strange flowers appear to rise from the rock and to facilitate access tunnels and paths have been cut into the rock face.The Venice of the Far East is the nickname of the ancient Chinese city of Lijiang, in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural gem. Three rivers and several small creeks flow through the historic cit and there are various splendid stone bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Bao Shan is a typical village of the region and is just as it was hundreds of years ago with farmers slowly leading their ox wagons through the village. The houses were built over a period of more than 200 year between the Ming and Qing Dynasties, in 14 and 16 A.D. Yunnan Province - place of simplicity, exquisite culture and spectacular natural wonders!

Our hike to the Yakfields around Shangri-La and our Tibetan Homestay we arranged with: Khampa Caravan.
Loved it! The hike is definitely lonely and unique, though the village was not as spectaculair as we'd hoped.
And for those who wonder: Till early 2000's this town was called Zongdian, but the government thought it would attrack more tourists if they would rename the place Shangri-La. After the novel of James Hilton. Where Shangri-La is described as a mystical paradise on earth....
In 2014 the old city got fire and hundreds of houses were destroyed. Though rebuilding goes fast!
