June 30 & July 1, Zama City hosted its 52nd anniversary celebrating the community's history and its future through many great events held during Homecoming 2018.

Shokoku-ji Temple is located in Zama City of Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan.
The main diety at this temple is Hoshi-no-ya Kannon.
History of Camp Zama Japan
Since it's opening on Sept. 30th 1937, Camp Zama has gone by many names, from Rikugun-Shikan-Gakko (Imperial Army School for officers) to 4th Replacement Depot and finally Camp Zama. Although the people and areas have changed over the years it has always been a place of military importance in Japan.
The United States Army Garrison Japan and its 16 supported installation sites are located in the island of Honshu and Okinawa in Japan. The USAG Japan mission is to support the Headquarters, U.S. Army Japan / I Corps (fwd) to ensure mission readiness and the quality of life of the Army community in a sustainable, transforming joint and combined environment.
The USAG-J area of responsibility spans 1,500 miles from north to south of Japan. Camp Zama, home for both HQ USARJ and USAG-J is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Tokyo in the cities of Zama and Sagamihara in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The Camp Zama base cluster includes Sagamihara Housing Area and Sagami General Depot.
Akasaka Press Center is located in the center of Tokyo. The Akizuki/Kure area near Hiroshima is an ammunition depot. Yokohama North Dock is a port facility in the city of Yokohama, a major commerce port and a popular shopping area. USAG Torii Station is located 980 miles southwest of Camp Zama on the island of Okinawa.

Motorbike Tour of Camp Zama

Camp Zama is located near Zama-shi (Zama City), about 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Tokyo in Kanagawa Prefecture, and is home to approximately 5,000 military and civilian personnel and their dependents. It is shared with a contingent of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). The sprawling 578-acre installation is a virtual small American town replete with housing quarters, 18-hole golf course, schools, shopping and dining facilities, food court, fitness center, bowling alley, indoor pool, park, fishing pond, and other amenities. It also includes Kastner Army Airfield, which boasts a 1,910-foot runway.
Camp Zama was originally established in 1936 by Emperor Hirohito as the Sobudai Imperial Japanese Army Officers Academy, the equivalent of West Point. Immediately after Japan's surrender in World War II, the 1st Cavalry Division took possession of the academy, which then served as the 4th Replacement Depot. It was later renamed Camp Zama and served throughout the Korean and Vietnam wars as a principal logistical support facility. Located in nearby Sagamihara, Camp Zama U.S. Army Hospital (which closed in 1979) treated wounded servicemembers during both conflicts.

Japanese Neighboring Residents Tour Camp Zama
Citizens and council members of the Sagamihara and Zama city communities visited Camp Zama to tour the installation and receive a briefing on the mission of U.S. Army Japan as part of a Central Readiness Force relocation tour. The tour was hosted by the South Kanto Defense Bureau.
Japan Walkalong: A walk through Zama [unedited]
Zama (座間市 ) is a city located in central Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. On our 2nd to last day in Japan, we decided to venture outside the Tokyo for a low key walk around Zama.
Zama is also home to a U.S Army base. The footage in the video is largely unedited. As some maybe considering Zama as their next PCS [duty station], we wanted to post a video that mimicked a walk through this small and wonderful town.

The Zama Nagasyuku Choju-kai, or Long Life Community tours Camp Zama
Many members of the Nagasyuku Choju-kai have lived near Camp Zama since before the Japanese Imperial Army Academy was established there.
During World War II, the Japanese government needed more soldiers because the war situation was fast deteriorating, so male students were graduated from school at 14 years old. They were then trained to be Imperial Army soldiers.
The U.S. Army Garrison Japan Public Affairs Office coordinates and supports many installation tours throughout the year -- not only for the Nagasyuku Choju-kai, but other groups as well.

Tokai Univ. Students visit Camp Zama
Eleven students and a lecturer from Tokai University recently visited Camp Zama as part of an international relations class field trip. They offered flowers and moments of silence in front of the Sobudai Monument which was dedicated in 1940 when Camp Zama was the Japanese Imperial Military Academy.

Sunflower Festival In Japan, Zama 座間 ひまわりまつり
With sunflowers as its official flower, Zama City (座間市) in Kanagawa Prefecture (神奈川県) celebrates the Zama Sunflower Festival. More than 550,000 sunflowers bloom during this two-part festival. In July, the festival is held at Kurihara (栗原) and in August, the festival is held at Zama. Various sunflower products such as sunflower pasta, crackers, and beverages are sold during the festival.
Kurihara is accessible by bus or taxi from Sobudai-mae Station (相武台前駅), while Zama is a 20-minute walk from the JR Sobudaishita Station (相武台下駅) or a 25-minute walk from the JR Iriya Station (入谷駅).

History of Camp Zama
Camp Zama is known today as the home of U.S. Army Japan and I Corps Forward. But the installation was also the former site of the Japanese Imperial Army officers’ school. Retired Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Lt. Gen. Masao Horie was among the 426 cadets of the first class to graduate in 1937. Horie tells us about school life as he walk with us the installation.
