Το φαράγγι του Ρούβα ή Αγίου Νικολάου είναι το σημαντικότερο φαράγγι του Ψηλορείτη και της κεντρικής Κρήτης και πήρε το όνομα του από το ομώνυμο Βυζαντινό εκκλησάκι στη νότια είσοδο του. Πρόκειται για ένα οικοσύστημα με πλούσια χλωρίδα και πανίδα, χαράδρες και ενδιαφέροντες γεωλογικούς σχηματισμούς και ορθοπλαγιές σπάνιας ομορφιάς. Έχει συνολικό μήκος 4 km με διαμορφωμένη διαδρομή 2,7 km . Το δάσος του Ρούβα, στο φαράγγι του Αγίου Νικολάου, αποτελεί ένα σημαντικό οικοσύστημα πρινοδάσους εθνικού ενδιαφέροντος. Στη θέση Άη Γιάννη υπάρχει το ομώνυμο εκκλησάκι ενώ στο τριγύρω λιβάδι έχει δημιουργηθεί χώρος για πικ νικ. Η διαδρομή μπορεί να αρχίσει ή να καταλήξει νότια όπου είναι η μικρή γραφική λίμνη του Ζαρού.
The gorge of Rouvas or Agios Nikolaos, is the most important gorge of Psiloritis and central Crete. This is an ecosystem with rich flora and fauna.It has a total length of 4 km with 2,7km being well-shaped by the Forest Service for soft activities such as hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, naturalism and observation of wildlife in a truly unique environment. The forest of Rouvas, in the gorge of St. Nicholas, is an important ecosystem of holly trees of national interest. To the south is the small picturesque lake of Zaros

Zaros, a beautiful village in Southern Crete
Zaros is a small village in southern Crete blessed by Nature. It has a lot of running waters that are commercially exploited. There is also a beautiful lake and the canyon of Saint Nicolas.
Lake of ZAROS
By the late '80s, just north of the village of Zaros, at the roots of the mountain, there was a small wetland around the source Votomos that was created by the great source of Votomos crater.
In 1987, around the source thanks to the interference of the Forest Service a small pond was created and the whole are became one of the most important forest areas of the island and today attracts visitors from all around the world that come to see for their own the lake and walk along the amazing green of the area.
If you love nature and want to spend relaxing holidays in the green, come and enjoy your walk by the lake with your family.
Start your morning with some fresh air and coffee by the lake and if you want you can follow the path that will lead you to Zaros gorge. Enjoy the beautiful walk by the nature, the waterfalls and the green to end up in the forest of Rouvas.

Λίμνη Ζαρού (Βοτόμος)
Η τεχνητή λίμνη του Ζαρού ή Βοτόμος βρίσκεται στις νότιες πλαγιές του Ψηλορείτη, 1 χλμ βόρεια από τον Ζαρό και 45 χλμ νοτιοδυτικά του Ηρακλείου. Η λίμνη πριν το 1987 ήταν ένας μικρός υδροβιότοπος ο οποίος σχηματιζόταν από τον κρατήρα της πηγής Βοτόμου. Την σημερινή της μορφή την πήρε το 1987, όταν η Δασική υπηρεσία ανέπλασε την περιοχή και δημιούργησε μια τεχνητή λίμνη όπου συγκρατούνται τα νερά της πηγής.
Η λίμνη τροφοδοτείται με νερό από την πηγή Βοτόμος, μια από τις πολλές πηγές της ευρύτερης περιοχής. Η ονομασία Βοτόμος είναι γνωστή στους Κρητικούς από την ομώνυμη εταιρεία εμφιάλωσης ενός από τα πιο διάσημα νερά στην Κρήτη, το «Ζαρός». Η ονομασία Ζαρός προέρχεται από το μόριο Ζα, που σημαίνει πολύ, και το ρήμα ρέω. «Ζαρός» δηλαδή σημαίνει το μέρος όπου ρέει πολύ νερό.
Γύρω από τη λίμνη υπάρχουν αρκετές ταβέρνες και καφετέριες, όπου ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να ξεκουραστεί και να απολαύσει πέστροφα και σολωμό, οι οποίες εκτρέφονται σε στέρνες δίπλα στη λίμνη. Επίσης, υπάρχει μια παιδική χαρά, χώροι με παγκάκια και τραπέζια, στους οποίους μπορείτε να κάνετε πικ νικ. Η βόλτα γύρω από την λίμνη είναι πολύ σύντομη και αξίζει, καθώς οι όχθες τις είναι πνιγμένες στο πράσινο και στα πλατάνια.
Τέλος, από τη λίμνη ξεκινάει το μονοπάτι που οδηγεί μέσα στο φαράγγι του Αγίου Νικολάου και καταλήγει μετά από 5 χλμ πορείας στο μαγευτικό πρινόδασος του Ρούβα (2:30 ώρες).
