Christian Awe & Shingo Francis: Artists Bringing Inspiration to the World | Talks at Google
Christian Awe is a Berlin-based painter and this is his first exhibition in a Japanese museum. He grew up in East Germany before the wall fell in ‘89, and that life changing event gave him an opportunity to explore the arts. He is also an art activist who strives to make the world better, such as building a school for children in Bukina Faso, Africa.
Shingo Francis is an artist who lives and works in Japan and the United States. His work spans across painting, drawing, installation and video, and draws from the rich history of art and the current events of our time. As the son of American painter Sam Francis and Japanese video artist Mako Idemitsu, Shingo’s work speaks to the dynamics of these two contrasting cultures.

The Gift of Photography - Interview with Reid Callanan
Reid Callanan is a man with a singular focus on photographic education and through his impressive passion, he has built one of the most successful workshop organizations in the United States.
Santa Fe Photographic Workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico has been in operation for nearly 30 years and in that time, he has expanded from a handful of courses with a staff of six, to well over 200 classes a year, hosted by a symphony of established veterans of the craft. Its this fascinating story of growth, that has offered a guiding light for new and seasoned photographers from around the world.
Today, he joins StreetPX to discuss his journey from learning and working with visionaries such as Craig Stevens, Ernst Haas and Elliot Porter, at the Main Photographic Workshops in Rockport, Maine to taking such a unique idea and making it his own in the open spaces of New Mexico.
Throughout, Reid shares stories of his time photographing behind the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union, his love of skiiing, inviting in Muhammed Ali while working with Apple Master Class, the expansion of workshops into Cuba and much more.
I got to meet my heroes in photography. But not just meet them, I got to have meals with them and show them my photography, look at their work. It was just this amazing, eye opening experience…. Short Story is, went to Maine. Took a two week class and stayed for 14 years.
Reid Callanan speaking on getting his start with Maine Photographic Workshops
When you try to photograph with a long lens without explaining who you are and then walk away. They are not going to be receptive. They are not going to give you any piece of themselves. You might be able to photograph what they look like, but your not gonna be able to photograph who they are, as people.
The only way to photograph who they are and to capture an essence of them, or some part of them, is to have a relationship with them. The only way to do that is to be open and honest and respectful of them.

Wealth and Power in America: Social Class, Income Distribution, Finance and the American Dream
Wealth in the United States is commonly measured in terms of net worth, which is the sum of all assets, including home equity, minus all liabilities. More on the topic:
For example, a household in possession of an $800,000 house, $5,000 in mutual funds, $30,000 in cars, $20,000 worth of stock in their own company, and a $45,000 IRA would have assets totaling $900,000. Assuming that this household would have a $250,000 mortgage, $40,000 in car loans, and $10,000 in credit card debt, its debts would total $300,000. Subtracting the debts from the worth of this household's assets (900,000 - $300,000 = $600,000), this household would have a net worth of $600,000. Net worth can vary with fluctuations in value of the underlying assets.
The wealth—more specifically, the median net worth—of households in the United States is varied with relation to race, education, geographic location and gender. As one would expect, households with greater income feature the highest net worths, though high income cannot be taken as an always accurate indicator of net worth. Overall the number of wealthier households is on the rise, with baby boomers hitting the highs of their careers. In addition, wealth is unevenly distributed, with the wealthiest 25% of US households owning 87% of the wealth in the United States, which was $54.2 trillion in 2009.
When observing the changes in the wealth among American households, one can note an increase in wealthier individuals and a decrease in the number of poor households, while net worth increased most substantially in semi-wealthy and wealthy households. Overall the percentage of households with a negative net worth (more debt than assets) declined from 9.5% in 1989 to 4.1% in 2001.
The percentage of net worths ranging from $500,000 to one million doubled while the percentage of millionaires tripled. From 1995 to 2004, there was tremendous growth among household wealth, as it nearly doubled from $21.9 trillion to $43.6 trillion, but the wealthiest quartile of the economic distribution made up 89% of this growth. During this time frame, wealth became increasingly unequal, and the wealthiest 25% became even wealthier.
According to US Census Bureau statistics this Upward shift is most likely the result of a booming housing market which caused homeowners to experience tremendous increases in home equity. Life-cycles have also attributed to the rising wealth among Americans. With more and more baby-boomers reaching the climax of their careers and the middle aged population making up a larger segment of the population now than ever before, more and more households have achieved comfortable levels of wealth. Zhu Xiao Di (2004) notes that household wealth usually peaks around families headed by people in their 50s, and as a result, the baby boomer generation reached this age range at the time of the analysis.

Races and Cultures in the Deep South of the United States: Educational Film
The Southern United States—commonly referred to as the American South, Dixie, or simply the South— is an area in the southeastern and south-central United States. More:
The region is known for its distinct culture and history, having developed its own customs, musical styles and varied cuisines that have helped distinguish it from the rest of the United States. The South has traditionally shown the strongest instances and rules favoring racism against Blacks and Hispanics.[2][3] The Southern ethnic heritage is diverse.[4] The central factor has been the consequence of plantation dependence on slave labor; the presence of a large proportion of African Americans in the population; and the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War.
Historically, the South relied heavily on agriculture, and was highly rural until after 1945. It has since become more industrialized and urban and has attracted national and international migrants. The American South is now among the fastest-growing areas in the United States. While there has been rapid economic growth, every Southern state with the exceptions of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida has a higher poverty rate than the American average.[5] Poverty is especially prevalent in rural areas.[citation needed] Sociological research indicates that Southern collective identity stems from political, demographic, and cultural distinctiveness. The region contains the Bible Belt, an area of high church attendance, especially Evangelical churches such as the Southern Baptist Convention. Studies have shown that Southerners are more conservative than non-Southerners in several areas, including religion, morality, international relations and race relations.[6][7] This is evident in both the region's religious attendance figures and in the support for the Republican Party in political elections since the 1960s.[6][7]
Overall, the South has had lower percentages of high school graduates, lower housing values, lower household incomes, and lower cost of living than the rest of the United States.[8] These factors, combined with the fact that Southerners have continued to maintain strong loyalty to family ties, has led some sociologists to label white Southerners a quasi-ethnic regional group.[9] In previous censuses, the largest ancestry group identified by Southerners was English or mostly English,[10][11][12] with 19,618,370 self-reporting English as an ancestry on the 1980 census, followed by 12,709,872 listing Irish and 11,054,127 Afro-American.[10][11][12] Almost a third of all Americans who claim English ancestry can be found in the American South, and over a quarter of all Southerners claim English descent as well.[13] The South also continues to have the highest percentage of African-Americans in the country.
Apart from its climate, the living experience in the South increasingly resembles the rest of the nation. The arrival of millions of Northerners (especially in the suburbs and coastal areas) and millions of Hispanics means the introduction of cultural values and social norms not rooted in Southern traditions. Observers conclude that collective identity and Southern distinctiveness are thus declining, particularly when defined against an earlier South that was somehow more authentic, real, more unified and distinct. The process has worked both ways, however, with aspects of Southern culture spreading throughout a greater portion of the rest of the United States in a process termed Southernization.

How to Stay Out of Debt: Warren Buffett - Financial Future of American Youth (1999)
Buffett became a billionaire on paper when Berkshire Hathaway began selling class A shares on May 29, 1990, when the market closed at $7,175 a share. More on Warren Buffett:
In 1998, in an unusual move, he acquired General Re (Gen Re) for stock. In 2002, Buffett became involved with Maurice R. Greenberg at AIG, with General Re providing reinsurance. On March 15, 2005, AIG's board forced Greenberg to resign from his post as Chairman and CEO under the shadow of criticism from Eliot Spitzer, former attorney general of the state of New York. On February 9, 2006, AIG and the New York State Attorney General's office agreed to a settlement in which AIG would pay a fine of $1.6 billion. In 2010, the federal government settled with Berkshire Hathaway for $92 million in return for the firm avoiding prosecution in an AIG fraud scheme, and undergoing 'corporate governance concessions'.
In 2002, Buffett entered in $11 billion worth of forward contracts to deliver U.S. dollars against other currencies. By April 2006, his total gain on these contracts was over $2 billion. In 2006, Buffett announced in June that he gradually would give away 85% of his Berkshire holdings to five foundations in annual gifts of stock, starting in July 2006. The largest contribution would go to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2007, in a letter to shareholders, Buffett announced that he was looking for a younger successor, or perhaps successors, to run his investment business. Buffett had previously selected Lou Simpson, who runs investments at Geico, to fill that role. However, Simpson is only six years younger than Buffett.
Buffett ran into criticism during the subprime crisis of 2007--2008, part of the late 2000s recession, that he had allocated capital too early resulting in suboptimal deals. Buy American. I am. he wrote for an opinion piece published in the New York Times in 2008. Buffett has called the 2007--present downturn in the financial sector poetic justice. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway suffered a 77% drop in earnings during Q3 2008 and several of his recent deals appear to be running into large mark-to-market losses.
Berkshire Hathaway acquired 10% perpetual preferred stock of Goldman Sachs. Some of Buffett's Index put options (European exercise at expiry only) that he wrote (sold) are currently running around $6.73 billion mark-to-market losses. The scale of the potential loss prompted the SEC to demand that Berkshire produce, a more robust disclosure of factors used to value the contracts. Buffett also helped Dow Chemical pay for its $18.8 billion takeover of Rohm & Haas. He thus became the single largest shareholder in the enlarged group with his Berkshire Hathaway, which provided $3 billion, underlining his instrumental role during the current crisis in debt and equity markets.
In 2008, Buffett became the richest man in the world, with a total net worth estimated at $62 billion by Forbes and at $58 billion by Yahoo, dethroning Bill Gates, who had been number one on the Forbes list for 13 consecutive years. In 2009, Gates regained the position of number one on the Forbes list, with Buffett second. Their values have dropped to $40 billion and $37 billion, respectively, Buffett having lost $25 billion in 12 months during 2008/2009, according to Forbes.
In October 2008, the media reported that Warren Buffett had agreed to buy General Electric (GE) preferred stock. The operation included extra special incentives: he received an option to buy 3 billion GE at $22.25 in the next five years, and also received a 10% dividend (callable within three years). In February 2009, Buffett sold some of the Procter & Gamble Co, and Johnson & Johnson shares from his portfolio.
In addition to suggestions of mistiming, questions have been raised as to the wisdom in keeping some of Berkshire's major holdings, including The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) which in 1998 peaked at $86. Buffett discussed the difficulties of knowing when to sell in the company's 2004 annual report:
That may seem easy to do when one looks through an always-clean, rear-view mirror. Unfortunately, however, it's the windshield through which investors must peer, and that glass is invariably fogged.
