Filmed [Chinese] opera - taken from actual performance - is not a major genre in the Sinolingual circuit. I would argue that this is because there is little or nothing that the camera can add, making the result more like a documentary than a narrative film.
Behind this lies the jealously sustained heritage of traditional opera acting, which derives ultimately from the ceremonial wearing of a mask and its coordinated costume. Neither change of angle nor of distance much changes the way the acting (mime) is projected onto the screen: movement would have to be freer and much more dramatic for that to happen, especially the movement of the face (facial expression).
Shaoxing opera qua film is an exception: the actresses were in the late 40s and 50s trained to act (express) in the Stanislavsky mode, making the closing the retreat of the camera dramatic indeed.
This film is in a sense a tribute to the way it was in the early 50s, or even late 40s, when carefully crafted cinematography (as well as the cognate musical invention: the use of an off-camera female chorus to depersonalize or examine the on-stage characters from a third dimension). The lead actress, Yuan Xuefen, had starred in the initial film of the play/opera (1948), which had been lost: this production was created in a sense to recreate that lost gem before its lead actresses (Zhou Baokui and Yuan herself - both nearing 60) - lost what remained of their singing voices.
Unfortunately the film itself - recorded for TV - does not include Chinese subtitles for the straight dialogue (bai), which is in (to me) incomprehensible Shaoxing dialect. Was the original idea to privilege the large community of Ningbo/Shaoxing residents in Shanghai by giving them a special in?
Police Caught Armed Robbery in E China
A 19-year old man conducted a gun robbery in a convenient store at a gas station in Shaoxing city, east China's Zhejiang Province and dashed off several months ago. The police caught him recently on his way to rob the same store.
The robbery happened before dawn when the two on-duty sales clerks doing accounting in the store. The robber walked toward the cashier desk with a peak cap on his head and mask on face. He then took out a handgun and demanded money.
The sales clerks were frightened and the robber was able to get money from the store before fleeing on foot.
Local police rushed to the scene to make arrests after receiving alarm, but the robber escaped quickly.
Police took the video surveillance of the store and found out some helpful hints.
We did an experiment, an measurement experiment. We sent someone who has a similar body shape with him to pass by from here. And we learnt his height is about 1.6 meters. And by his walks in and out, he probably has bandy legs, said Wu Yusong, police of Shaoxing's Public Security Bureau.
Though police carried out a carpet-style investigation in villages near the gas station and beefed up the patrol force, no clues were found until four months later. A police officer found a man near the convenient store who looked like the robber in the surveillance video during a patrolling.
Police went after the man immediately and found the handgun that appeared in the surveillance video on him. By trial, the man confessed that he was the robber and admitted the gun was actually an imitation gun.
He gained the propensity to violence by watching violent films and television programs. And he bought the tool for criminal from on internet, police Wu said.
