Experts Treat Wild Panda Injured for Suspected Mating
The Staff members of the Zhouzhi National Nature Reserve, located in Zhouzhi County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, recently saved a wild panda with a serious injury on the back because of suspected fight for spouse, expert said.
Pan Guanglin, a vet of the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Research Center, said the staff members walked a whole day and night in the forest to the panda.
It was hiding below a stone. It was alerted when people approached, and had reaction to the environment and people around despite its poor condition. So we gave anesthesia to it, said Pan.
The staff members then checked the panda. We found a festered rotton injury - about 12 cm by 12 cm - on its back with maggoty flesh. So we clean it at once, said Pan.
Soon afterwards, the staff members conducted a surgery on the panda.
It was raining at the time and two thirds of its body, including the injury, was exposed to the rain. So the staff put up a raincoat to keep the rain out of the injury, said Pan.
To ensure the safety of the panda, 20 staff members stayed beside it for a whole night.
We woke up shortly after seven o'clock, and found some fresh droppings at the place we treated it, and there were some new bites on bamboos nearby. Finally we found it lying on stomach some 50 or 60 meters away, just below the stone we found the day before, said Pan.
Seeing the panda regaining strength and appetite, the staff were reassured and left.
Pan said, It was a male panda of about 11 to 13 years old. The bite on the back should be caused by fight for spouse, and infected for being unable to get treatment for a long time.

Inner Mongolia or Nei Mongol (Mongolian: Mongolian script: Öbür Monggol, Mongolian Cyrillic: Өвөр Монгол Övör Mongol /ɵwɵr mɔŋɢɔɮ/; simplified Chinese: 内蒙古; traditional Chinese: 內蒙古; pinyin: PRC Standard Mandarin: Nèi Měnggǔ, ROC Standard Mandarin: Nèi Ménggǔ), officially the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region or Nei Mongol Autonomous Region (NMAR), is one of the autonomous regions of the People's Republic of China, located in the north of the country. Its border includes most of the length of China's border with Mongolia, and a small section of China's border with Russia. Its capital is Hohhot; other major cities include Baotou, Chifeng, and Ordos.
The Autonomous Region was established in 1947, incorporating the areas of the former Republic of China provinces of Suiyuan, Chahar, Rehe, Liaobei and Xing'an, along with the northern parts of Gansu and Ningxia.
Its area makes it the third largest Chinese subdivision, constituting approximately 1,200,000 km2 (463,000 sq mi) and 12% of China's total land area. It recorded a population of 24,706,321 in the 2010 census, accounting for 1.84% of Mainland China's total population. Inner Mongolia is the country's 23rd most populous province-level division. The majority of the population in the region are Han Chinese, with a sizeable titular Mongol minority. The official languages are Mandarin and Mongolian, the latter of which is written in the traditional Mongolian script, as opposed to the Mongolian Cyrillic alphabet, which is used in the state of Mongolia (formerly often described in the West as Outer Mongolia).
