In the county of Zadar, tourists can explore a wonderful natural attraction with a history: a landscape that even enchanted the film crew during the making of the Karl May Winnetou movies. Shortly before it flows into the Novigrad sea, the karst Zrmanja River flows through a wild and romantic gorge that cuts through the rough and rocky landscape before the emerald green shimmering water of the Zrmanja River empties in the sea.
The Zrmanja Canyon is an untouched piece of heaven on earth. The best way to explore the Zrmanja Canyon is from the town of Jasenice (towards Obrovac), which is located several kilometers east of Maslenica. Obrovac is situated directly on karst Zrmanja River, but the access to the canyon, however, lies in front of the village a way. It is recommended to use the telephone poles as guides. There is a path leading to a viewing platform above the canyon between pole numbers 86 and 87. There is a sign with the instructions: Parizevacka glavica. A plaque at the plateau points out where Karl May's Winnetou was filmed.
Those who are not necessarily interested in the canyon's film can also explore the unique river landscape of canyons, for example, from the water. Many tourists take the chance to navigate through the canyon by canoe or kayak. A good starting point for a canoe trip is Kastel Zegarski, where there is also a rafting vendors. The village is located about 19 kilometers east of Obrovac on the Zrmanja River, but still behind the Krupa tributary. In general, about half of the more than 70 kilometer long river is navigable. The approximately 4-hour-long rafting trip (swimming breaks and meals included) starts across a few small water levels until reaching the imposing Visoki Buk Waterfall. The 13 meter high waterfall can also be seen from an 80-meter long footpath going along the banks. The journey continues again, passing by rapids, smaller sinter terraces and waterfalls as well as by Ogarov Buk until reaching the village of Muskovici. This is the final destination and from here, participants will be brought back to the starting point.

Peaceful paddling through the magnificent canyon. Zrmanja along with its tributary river Krupa features one of Croatia’s most beautiful landscapes – a freshwater oasis in the middle of the krast wasteland.
Zrmanja and Krupa are full of rapids and waterfalls formed upon sedra deposits. Those fragile barriers are the reason why paddling on Krupa is prohibited, while on the upper flow of Zrmanja only inflatable kayaks are allowed. Below Obrovac Zrmanja is navigable so it is advisable to take a sea kayak and start early in the morning or off the summer season in order to avoid speedboats along the way.
More than a hundred-meter high canyon will lead you ten kilometres along the way to the Novigrad sea. Besides a few goat tracks, the canyon has no real terrain approach.
For this trip chose a day with no wind. Northern winds are here to be avoided, especially bura that can be very strong and gusty and block your return. Follow this link to the parking lot in Obrovac where you can easily enter the river. Take some extra food, water and warm clothing.

Der Zrmanja ist einer der schönsten Flüsse Europas. Das Wasser ist sehr klar und sauber. Kanufahren und Rafting ist hier sehr beliebt. Atemberaubend schön ist der Zrmanaj Canyon. Auch hier wurden schon viele Filmszenen gedreht. Der Canyon ist zirka 200 Meter tief. Der Zrmanja und seine Umgebung sind wunderschön und eine Reise wert.

Za Zrmanju, rijeku koja izvire ispod planine Poštak u Lici, s pravom se može reći da je skrivena. Dio pritoka joj je pod Velebitom, a veći dio toka 'sakrio' se u kanjonima koji su teško prohodni. Upravo je kanjon te krške rijeke tvorac 'Winnetoua' odabrao za lokaciju snimanja svog legendarnog filma.
Rijeka je to koja je u svom kanjonu stvorila mnoge sedrene slapove, a među najpoznatijima je i Berberov buk.

Zrmanja and Krupa are among the most beautiful rivers in Europe: perfectly clear warm water, spectacular canyon with magnificent waterfalls. They are easy and safe enough for beginner canoeists but their scenery makes them also very exciting. You will see many fish and birds and explore typical karst phenomenon – living travertine waterfalls. The trip begins in Kastel Zegarski, only one hour drive from Zadar. You will quickly learn how to handle sit-on-top kayaks as you slowly enter the canyon. After the first hour of paddling down easy rapids you will – if time and weather permit – visit beautiful Krupa waterfalls and swim under them. More waterfalls and rapids wait for you as you continue down Zrmanja towards Muskovci where the trip ends. At the end of the trip optionally you can enjoy refreshments at a nearby restaurant or take a picnic on your own.
