☆Bits of knowledge〜Zuiho-in Daitoku-ji〜
Zuiho-in (瑞峯院) is a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji, and one of the few to to open to the public year-round. The temple was founded in 1546 by a feudal lord as a family temple. As it was founded after the Onin war, many buildings in Zuiho-in are originals, including its main hall. A particularity of this temple is that its founder Otomo converted to Christianity and received the Christian name of Francisco. Shortly after Christianity was banned in Japan, and there were no teachings of the Christian faith in Zuiho-in.
The visit of Zuiho-in starts with its front garden. To reach the builds from the front gate one has to turn three times, a design that helps the visitor feeling a distance between the busy outside world and the quietness of the temple itself. Note the formal gate of the temple located at the end of the front garden. This classic feature in a zen garden only used in very, very special occasions. After entering the temple one reaches the main hall and, more importantly the main garden that lies in front of it.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Ryoan-ji〜
Ryoan-ji Temple's dry rock garden is a puzzle. Nobody knows who designed it or what the meaning is of the 15 rocks scattered across its expanse of raked white gravel. Some academics say they represent a tiger carrying a cub across a stream; others believe they depict an ocean accented with small islands or the sky dotted with clouds. There's even a theory that the rocks form a map of Chinese Zen monasteries. The only thing scholars do agree on is that Ryoan-ji is one of the finest examples of Zen landscaping in the country. You could stay there for years quietly contemplating the garden's riddles and still get no nearer to an answer, and maybe that's the point.

Dry Landscape Rock (karesansui) Style Zen Garden at Ryoanji Temple, Kyoto city
karesansui is a type of garden style that is used in Zen Gardens in Japan. This style uses a dry landscape with rocks and gravel with absolutely no vegetation at all. The garden is usually made with gravel, sand and rocks. The visitors are not allowed inside the garden but there is a pavilion next to the garden from where visitors can watch the garden.
The garden at Ryoanji temple is a world famous example of this type of zen gardens. The simple yet remarkable garden measures only twenty five meters from east to west and ten meters from south to north. The rectangular zen garden contains only fifteen rocks and white gravel. It is up to each visitor to find out for himself what this unique garden signifies. The longer you gaze at it, the more varied your imagination becomes.
This garden at Ryoanji temple is said to be created at the end of Muromachi Period (around 1500) by a highly respected Zen monk Tokuho Zenketsu.
Enjoy.
