ABANDONED Dog Race Track/Betting Parlor/Horse Track
Best Bet poker room on the Duval/St. Johns county border. From what I can find on the inter-webs this spot has been a horse track and a dog track prior to becoming a poker room. It became a Best Bet poker room in 2004 and closed in 2012 after Best Bet opened other rooms in the more densely populated areas of Jacksonville (Monument Road) and Orange Park. Prior to it becoming a poker room it was the St. Johns Greyhound Race Track. This spot has had a track of some sort dating back to 1953 when it was the Ponce De Leon Track, later becoming Gator Downs running harness and then a 1/4 mile track or quarter horse racing. Nature is quickly reclaiming this imaginably valuable plot of land. Given all the population growth in the immediate region my bet is that it’s just a matter of time until this is torn down and converted something else.

2016 BetAmerica Daytona550 Participant - Seldom Told
Seldom Told (Trent Lee-Need A Date)
Owner: Sharon Williams
Trainer: Craig Edwards
Kennel: DQ Williams Kennel
2015 Race Record: (31) 23-5-2-0
Probably one of the most talked about greyhounds in the country is Seldom Told. The impressive looking 84 lb. black pup broke on to the racing scene in 2014. He quickly moved up the ladder, winning his first eight races in eye-opening fashion. He earned second team All-America honors in 2014.
In 2015, Seldom Told continued his winning ways, with many of his victories being by large margins. Chart comments like, in full command, dominating performance, and running machine, accurately describe Seldom Told’s performances. He won 23 races in his 31 starts in 2015 at Gulf Greyhound Park. One of those races included a win to capture the Kings and Queens Stakes.
An injury kept Seldom Told off the track in the middle of 2015, but he returned to the Gulf Greyhound Track oval with a bang. On September 16, Seldom Told set the track record with a winning time of 29.38. A few days later, Need My Moneynow broke that record with a 29.35 clocking. Not to be outdone, just a week or so later Seldom Told matched his kennel-mate and half-brother’s record time. With Gulf closing, Seldom Told shipped to Orange Park. He won his schooling race in near track record time (30.24), and in his first official start, he won by a whopping ten and a half lengths.
Seldom Told is a true superstar. He has explosive speed, and a big stride that can cover ground quickly. He should be a major factor early in the BetAmerica Daytona 550, but also has the speed and bottom to win from off the pace. The son of Trent Lee and Need A Date gives the DQ Williams Kennel two entries, (the other being Need My Moneynow), in the national championship race.

Bird Watching Hotspots in Belize
The diverse landscape of Belize offers a wide variety in bird watching locations, ranging from broadleaf forests to wetlands, mangroves to pine forests, and savannahs to rainforest. Home to 16 endangered bird species, Belize protects these ecosystems in its many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. What is good for the bird is good for the bird watcher. Here is a list at some of Belize’s protected areas to brief you on what to look for at the best bird watching spots in the country.
Cockscomb Basic Wildlife Sanctuary
Trekking along Belize’s most well-maintained trails through the reserve’s 128,000 acres of lush tropical rainforest, you may glimpse the emerald toucanet, keel-billed toucan, king vulture and scarlet macaw. Although the sanctuary was originally established to preserve Belize’s endangered jaguar population, it also serves as a refuge for about 300 species of birds. Avid birders visit this preserve for all the dazzling color around the canopy, as well as spotting the most elusive of the big cats.
Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary
Established in 1984 by the Belize Audubon Society, this wildlife sanctuary quickly became an important refuge for water bids during the wet season and feeding birds during the dry season. As the biggest flying bird in the Americas, the five-foot-tall jabiru stork represents the largest draw for birders and birding tours. You best bet at seeing a jabiru is a boat tour of Crooked Tree when the water is low.
Caracoal Archeological Reserve
After exploring the largest and most impressive Mayan ruin, take some time to look around for the keel-billed motmot. Although considered an endangered species, this stunning little bird is a common sight at the Caracol Archeological Reserve. A glimpse of its yellow breast and brilliant sapphire tail makes for an interesting contrast with the ruins – a living beauty next to a faded glory.
Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve
Granite rock formations worn down by 300 million years of water, rain and wind frame the majestic falls cascading into the Rio On Pools. Above this impressive show is a hepatic tanager gliding through the air. Along the trail to the Frio Caves, songs and calls fill the forest as orange-billed sparrows and white-throated robins fly curly-cues in the air above. This reserve is a stunning natural destination, as well as a home to some of the country’s most unique bird species.
Half Moon Caye National Monument
The air is rife with the squawks and screeches of thousands of red-footed boobies nesting in the ziricote thicket of this monument. The healthy population of red-footed books leaves the ground covered in black and white feathers. These odd-looking birds are entertaining to watch, and a platform in the heart of the nesting area makes it easy for birders to get up close and personal with the birds.
Observing the unique qualities of different bird species while wandering through secluded forests, marshes and grassland takes adventure travel to a whole new level. Bird watching will let you fall more deeply in love with Mother Nature and appreciate her variety.
UDI RC Tempo Boat
I was provided a sample for review purposes but my opinions are my own. Amazon limits video reviews to 100 megs, so I will include a link to my higher resolution video review in the comments section. Also, this review is for the Tempo boat but the Venom is just a different color.
UDI RC’s Tempo/Venom boat is a ton of fun.
This boat is awesome and I like lots and lots of things about it. Let me start with the boat itself. The hull is very, very fast and it can go up to 15 mph in the water no problem. I did get some water in the boat on my first two runs but did not get any in on my next two runs. You need to really make sure you have sealed the top down into the grooves and have pressed it down and have sealed it as tight as you possibly can.
The boat is very stable in the water and I tried to flip it but could not. However, should you flip it in the water, have no fear as this boat has an automatic flipping feature. That is by far the best feature of this boat as it means that you can run it virtually on any water surface and not have to worry if it accidentally gets flipped over.
The rudder is nice and big and the servo that controls it is nice and smooth. Servo based control means that a little left is a little left and a lot of left is a lot of left. It is proportional to how much you turn the steering wheel which is a great thing.
I found the transmitter which requires 4 AA batteries very easy to use. When you put the boat in the water, I suggest you just go straight out first and adjust the trim settings so the boat travels as straight as possible – this will help you for the whole time you run the boat. I did not receive two boats so I cannot comment on if two boats can be synced up at the same time but the manufacturer states that you can do this I think with up to three boats. 2.4 GHz transmission is hobby grade and I had no range issues at all with this boat. Apparently when the battery gets weak the transmitter will start to beep, so this is a good safety feature that the manufacturer has built in.
The batteries are robust and you get about 6-8 minutes of runtime with each battery pack. You can tell when the batteries are getting close to dying because the boat slows down considerably. Do not let the batteries run all the way down, they are lithium ion and this will really damage them if you continually fully drain them.
A note of caution, supposedly the prop will stop turning when the boat is out of water. I noticed that it still turned occasionally when it was out of the water – so just be careful. Your best bet is to turn off the transmitter and then remove the boat from the water so you don’t have an accident.
Last but not least, this boat is not built for saltwater, so don’t take it to the ocean or it will quickly get ruined. One last tip that I want to pass on is to make sure you are comfortable getting into the water you drive your boat on or that you can access it with a boat. I caught mine in some weeds about 10’ away from the bank of the river and luckily the boat had enough steam to motor on in. However, had this been far out I would have had to go swimming, get a boat or be prepared to say bye-bye.
