MUNCHIES Guide to Berlin: The Modern Food Culture
Our host Kavita takes a look at the food from the New Berlin. After the Berlin Wall came down, Berlin experienced great change as artists from all over the world visited, restaurants and bars opened, and the food culture modernized.
Kavita meets Wally, an expat living in Berlin since the 90s, who has experienced the change firsthand and has the stories to tell about it. She then visits Koreans living in Berlin who have mixed their culture with German traditions, then finally heads to Nobelhart & Schmutzig, where German food gets reinvented.

EATING CURRYWURST IN BERLIN, GERMANY
Arriving just recently in Berlin one of the first things I wanted to do was sample authentic German street food. With the guidance of my lovely girlfriend Audrey (who has been to Germany several times) it was absolutely paramount -according to her - that I try currywurst.
Currywurst, for those unacquainted, is steamed then fried pork sausage (Wurst in German) sliced and diced up smothered in a ketchup based curry.

What I found particularly fascinating about this dish is its recent origins. Invented in Berlin in 1949 by Herta Heuwer, the first currywurst consisted of a sauce mixture of ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and curry powder from British soldiers in Germany. Initially a hit with construction workers rebuilding Berlin it soon exploded in popularity.
This isn't the first dish that I've discovered abroad influenced by foreign military presence after a war. In Korea, budae jjigae (Korean spam stew) was invented using American military food products just outside of Seoul.
Even more fascinating is that Berliner currywurst can be classified by east and west. East currywurst has skin whereas West currywurst doesn't. Come find out which one we prefer by watching the above food video.
Even quirkier, is that recently a Currywurst museum (The Deutsches Currywurst) opened in Berlin on August 15, 2009 to celebrate its creation on its 60th birthday. Who knew such a simple dish could become such a staple in such a short period of time.
Have you tried currywurst before? Let me know in the comment section below:
Sausage man! My new best friend.
You can't come to Berlin and not have currywurst. Actually, yesterday was the very first time I tried it and I instantly loved it. Today we're going to be trying two different kinds of curry wurst. We're going to be trying some from the East side and also some from the West side and they're completely different.
The currywurst is considered fast food here in Germany. It is a sausage that is steamed and then fried. It is sliced up and served with ketchup and curry powder over top. It is delicious!
First bite! It's amazing. I've been eating these since I first got to Berlin and I haven't gotten sick of them. They are so tasty. I'm going to make sure I've got lots of curry sauce on mine. Oh, wow! I can see why these are very popular in Germany.
And if just eating currywurst isn't enough for you one of the more quirky attractions in Berlin is visiting the currywurst museum where of our course apparently you get to have currywurst at the end of your tour.
So the sausage can be eaten many different ways. Today I've got it with french fries but you can order it with in a bun with a side our sauerkraut or even with a baked potato so you're not limited for options.
You can typically pick up the currywurst for anywhere between 2.50 to 3 Euro just on its own and if you want to get a side like fries it usually is about 5 Euros:

Berlin in 5 Days — What to Do, See and Eat + Day Trips! | The Travel Intern
Berlin is indeed a beautiful city that marries its rich past and diverse present. Here's our adventures from the five days that we were in Berlin, including two day trips that we took to neighbouring regions, Potsdam and Spreewald:
00:16 - Scoot
Fly direct to Berlin from Singapore via Scoot! Highly recommend getting the long haul bundle meal too.
00:21 - Berlin Welcome Card
For unlimited travel and discounted entrance fees, grab a Berlin Welcome Card for tourists only. Super worth it, and super fuss-free too!
00:26 - Brandenburg Gate
This was once a symbol of division during the Cold War, but it now stands for and signifies German unity and freedom.
00:35 - Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie was the only point from which foreigners could enter East Berlin from the West while the Berlin Wall was still up. Today, you can take a photograph with the actors dressed as American soldiers for 3 Euros! Otherwise, you can snap shots but it might be a little tricky!
00:45 - Reichstag Building, Reichstag Dome
Up here, you can get a fantastic panoramic view of Berlin's city centre and learn more about the history of this building! Make sure to book your tickets to visit the Dome though, because slots run out very quickly. Don't worry, it's free!
00:54 - Mauerpark
In the summer on Sundays, everyone's welcome to a mass karaoke session in the amphitheatre. The vintage market also draws lots of people to Mauerpark, young and old!
01:06 - Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap
Touted as one of the best kebap joints in Berlin, you can queue up to an hour on certain days, no matter the season (yes, even in Winter in the snow..) If you're ever in Berlin, you HAVE to get one of these kebaps. Super yummy!
01:15 - Markthalle Neun
Enjoy a wide variety of food on Street Food Thursdays in Markthalle Neun, from mac and cheese to slow-cooked boar, to artisanal ice-cream.
01:26 - Kneipe Klo
Also known as a toilet-themed bar in Berlin, this bar has decorations lining the entire place that make it seem like it was made for Halloween 24/7! Warning: beware of jumpscares around every corner.
01:43 - Berlin Wall Memorial
Where the Berlin Wall once stood, there are remnants of border houses that stood in between East and West Berlin in the past.
01:53 - Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
Home to 2,711 concrete slabs designed by American architect Peter Eisenman, its symbolism is open to interpretation, with the most common being that of a graveyard.
02:00 - Topography of Terror (Topographie des Terrors)
Once the most feared site of Berlin, it has now been converted into a free public museum for visitors to learn more about the history of Berlin during the Nazi regime.
02:09 - Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
Just 35 kilometres away from Berlin, Oranienburg houses the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. We recommend going on the tour led by SANDEMANs walking tours.
02:25 - East Side Gallery
The longest open air gallery in the world that's free of charge and spans 1.3 kilometres.
02:35 - Burgermeister
This joint used to house a public toilet, but has since been converted into one of Berlin's most popular burger joints. Super juicy meat patties!
02:47 - Spreewald, Lübbenau (Biosphärenreservat Spreewald)
Take a day trip one hour out of Berlin to the cozy city of Spreewald. The punt tours are a must-do, so book that early! Also, don't forget to try their specialties — gherkins!
03:03 - Potsdam
40 minutes from Berlin, this is another day trip that you should take. It really felt like stepping into a fairytale! Check out Sanssouci and the Neue Palais (New Palace)!
Stay till the end of the video to find out how we felt and what our favourite experiences were!
Have you been to Berlin before? :-) Share your experiences with us!
