This is the Urvich fortress, located on the Iskar river meander on a hill near Sofia. It isn't a very big one, but the legends say it withstood a 7 year siege by the ottomans in the end of 14th century in an effort to defend the Sofia (called Serdica at the time) from being captured. It's a great piece of history from the dark ages so I decided to give it some appreciation by circling around with a camera. Sofia, Bulgaria - 17.02.2018

Asen is a stone fortress that has stood strong for approximately 1000 years.
Its location, protruding out a 130 meter limestone cliff, hovering over the town of Asenovgrad provided this medieval fortress with optimum natural protection.
Its current name came from King Ivan Asen the Second's expansion and fortification of this structure in the 13th century.
Its high location provides any visitor with an unobstructed view of the surrounding mountains.
After the Ottoman take over in the 14th century, this now historic landmark was left to decay.
The most preserved aspect of the fortress is the church Saint Mary Petrichka, a cultural monument of great importance in Bulgaria.

The Shumen fortress is situated about 3 km westwards from the suburbs of the modern town. It is at the very end of the Shumen plateau. The imposing south-east tower and the remainders of the fortification wall loom from far away to the approaching visitor.
Archeological investigations have proven that the fortress existed in he Early Iron Age (12-th 11-th century BC). Traces of Tracian, Roman and Byzantine settlements were discovered there. The Shumen fortress played a significant role during the First (7-th 11-th centuries) and Second (12 th 14-th centuries) Bulgarian Kingdoms.
The thoroughly studied and skillfully arranged remainders of fortification walls, civil and religious buildings, make the fortress one of the most attractive open-air museums in Bulgaria. Part of the rich and diverse archaeological finds of ceramicware, metalware, stone sculptures and others, are exhibited in small museum in the fortress.

С появата на новата столица на картата на Европа, към града се стичат чужденци от различни страни, за да придадат на провинциалния град модерен, европейски облик. Един от тях е художникът Йозеф Обербауер.
After Bulgaria's Liberation in 1878 the capital-to-be Sofia covered only 4 sq. km. The new capital needed a modern, European appearance, so professionals from various countries
arrived to help with this. One of them was the painter Joseph Oberbauer.
Откриха уникално съкровище край Свещари
Намерени са части от дървено сандъче, в което има обгорели кости и пепел заедно с множество изключително запазени златни предмети. Те датират от края на 4 и началото на 3 век пр. Хр. Сред тях има диадема, 4-5 златни гривни, апликации към конска сбруя, множество апликациии с женска глава на богиня, мъниста. Особено впечатляващ е начелникът с прекрасна конска глава, чиято основа е направена като глава на лъв. Първоначално откритите златни експонати са около 1,5 кг, но проучванията продължават.
