Camels plodding across the desert, and a sense of timelessness evoked by Kitaro's theme music... NHK devoted 17 years to the planning, shooting and production of The Silk Road, which unearthed trade routes linking long-lost civilizations of East and West. A landmark in broadcasting history, this series told the story of the rise and fall of ancient civilizations.
The NHK Tokushu and China's CCTV documentary series The Silk Road began on April 7, 1980. The program started with the memorable scene of a camel caravan crossing the desert against the setting sun, with Kitaro's music and a sense of timelessness. It was the start of an epic televisual poem.
The first journey described in the series began in Chang'an (now Xi'an), at the eastern end of the ancient route. On 450,000 feet of film, the NHK crew recorded the path westward to the Pamir Heights at the Pakistan border and this material was edited to make 12 monthly broadcasts. In response to viewers' requests that the series be extended to cover the Silk Road all the way to Rome, sequels were made over the next 10 years. Seventeen years after the program was conceived, the project was completed.

Conquering the desert of no return! Expedition starts to cross Taklamakan in China's Xinjiang

Endless sand, shifting dunes, ancient Silk Road relics...The 337,000-square-km Taklamakan in northwest China's Xinjiang is known as a desert of no return. Swedish geographer and explorer Sven Anders Hedin tried to cross the Taklamakan along the 39 degrees north latitude line in 1895, but failed. Now a group of Chinese explorers have embarked on an ambitious expedition to cross the world's second largest shifting sand desert. Don't miss this video!

After Kyrgyzstan I visited the Xinjiang Province. While traveling here, a question constantly popped up in my head. Is this China? That's why decided to make this video a little bit different.

Stories of Southern Xinjiang 南疆纪事

This program was shot in Hotan 和田 and Kashgar 喀什 in Xinjiang 新疆. It follows three representative storylines, namely, Agrotechnicians from the hinterland help an old Uygur couple to deal with the insect attack in their garden; An Uygur young man who returned from his studying in the hinterland has his heart set on opening the market of his enterprises’ products; A Uygur man engaged in sweaters of Central Asia is busy for the coming trade fair held in a certain country in Central Asia. Their life are truly recorded to show the accomplishments made in today’s new Southern Xinjiang in terms of the construction of people's livelihood.

The process of making paper from the bark of mulberry trees is both complex and fascinating. Generations of Uyghur families in and around the Khotan area have passed down the tradition that makes use of the region’s plentiful mulberry trees as well as the dry heat.

I learned that paper-making using the bark of mulberry trees involves an 8-step process that takes a couple of days and at least 4 people to complete.

1) Gathering & Peeling: branches from mulberry trees are gathered and the bark is then peeled off, a painstaking task that is done by hand.
2) Air drying: the bark that has been peeled away is then dried in the hot, desert sun for 24 hours.
3) Boiling the Bark: once the bark has been dried, it is boiled in a large iron pan over an open fire – usually one that is fed with what is left of the mulberry branches.
4) Pounding the Mixture: the soupy mixture that is the result of boiling the bark is then pounded into submission by a wooden mallet.
5) Ferment the Mixture: after being pounded to death, this clumpy-looking bark soup is left in water to ferment. This word “ferment” is a direct translation of what I was told, but I’m not 100% sure that it means the same thing.
6) Filter Mixture into a Mold: what has now become a weird “goo” is then pressed into a mold that is basically a square wire mesh. The artisan carefully spreads the mixture out and presses it down into the mesh, removing any large clumps along the way.
7) Drying in the Sun: The wire mesh is placed outside where it will dry in the sun. During most of Khotan’s summer, this drying process doesn’t take long.
8) Peel and Prepare for Sale: Once dried, the paper is peeled from the wire mesh and prepared for sale.

Villagers in Xinjiang's Desert Town Reluctant to Move Despite Harsh Living Conditions

A state program to resettle residents from impoverished villages adjacent to northwest China’s Taklamakan Desert to nearby cities has become a hard choice for some of those who are reluctant in changing their habitual way of life.

45 year-old Zibidehan Subi is a Uygur housewife living in Darya Boyi, a lonely, sparsely populated oasis located deep in the Taklamakan Desert in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The village is home to 300 families, all are ethnic Uyghurs.

Subi has been living in a wooden house since she got married at 15. She says the biggest change in the village is the number of vehicles.

We enjoy living a nomadic life. But the children are elsewhere, so we need to go to see them. Otherwise, we don't have to leave the village, said Subi.

Ali Abdulla, her youngest son, goes to school in the Yutian county seat, some 250 kilometers away.

Gathering tree roots for cooking fuel is an traditional survival skill, as Darya Boyi is cut off from the outside world, and modern conveniences.

However, the old ways of living are changing among local youngsters. Ali says one question has always been in his mind, when can he leave the desert?

I want to take good care of my parents when I get a good job in the future,” said Ali Abdulla.

Villagers have survived in the Taklamakan for 400 years. However, the drying up of the Keriya River, and the encroaching sands have resulted in 50 families moving to the government-built resettlement houses on the outskirts of Yutian County.

Another 100 low-income families, including Zibidehan’s family, are expected to join them by 2018.

For her husband Abdulla Qasimu, living in a desert is neither bad nor good.

I have no skills other than herding. If I'm being relocated out of here, I can hardly make a living,” said Qasimu.

With inadequate water supplies, farming is not an option for Darya Boyi villagers. Many residents, especially the youngsters, say that relocation would be the easiest and quickest way to end their struggle in poverty.

Old villagers like Zibidehan say they want to stay in Darya Boyi and remain their habitual way of life.

We would love to live an easy life till we die. Conditions are harsh, but that’s the life of nomads. Allah made me a herdswoman; that’s my life. It just like the five fingers cannot be the same; life is what you make of it,” said Zibidehan. More on:

A research (field-recordings + video shooted) in the Xinjiang area with Uyghurs musicians (shamans, bards and Dolans), then reconstructed with computers and electrical instruments, going into a Neo-Shamanistic Post-Industrial music. On stage, two musicians are playing a documentary/fiction/road-movie/concert on an edited film shot in the depths of the desert of Taklamakan, up in the mountains of Karakoram as well as in the deep-hearts of last cities of the Silk Route. An incredible Post-Industrial New-Shamanistic music. An adventure/creation between Kashgar, Marqit, Iarkam and on the Pakistani, Tajik and Kirghiz borders.
