London Districts: Charlton
Here I explore the south east London district of 'Charlton' within the Greenwich borough. If you're looking for free things to do in London, Charlton is one of the best parts of London to achieve that. It is home to Charlton FC (Charlton Athletic Football Club) and the famous Charlton House. Several nearby attractions are on offer here such as the Blackheath fireworks display, the Blackheath funfair or the famous Blackheath village. If that isn't enough, the OnBlackheath festival each year is a great choice for music fans. Allow me to be your London tour guide around London Districts.

Charlton is a district in south east London that comes under the Royal Borough of Greenwich which used to known as the London Borough of Greenwich.
Its got a park, Charlton Park. The centre of Charlton is a village, Charlton Village. It's also the home to Charlton Athletic F.C.
Charlton actually used to be part of Kent but got drawn into the area of south east London in about 1855.
Charlton House is a large pretty building right in the centre of Charlton and is given a lot of room and respect since it was built at the start of 1600. Its got this E-shaped design plan to it. That was probably why it was used as a hospital during World War I. But, shortly after that, in World War 2 it got damaged in The Blitz. Today, if you go there, it just functions as a public community centre and library owned by the council.
The name Charlton was formed from 'Charl' and 'Ton' which together just means 'farms for men'. Charlton is 7 miles from the centre of London which is known to be Charing Cross.
Charlton is quite well connected by bus routes and has a train station which is served quite well from Central London. To back all of that up, it's about 15 minutes from North Greenwich tube station via the 486 bus and maybe some others.

This weeks documentary episode explores the south east London district of 'Greenwich' through a visual tour peppered with a commentary of light historical facts and recommendations. I hope to educate folks to the lesser known areas of London. Allow me to be your tour guide around London Districts!

Greenwich is now the capital district of what is now officially called the 'Royal Borough of Greenwich' since 2012.
In terms of domes around the world, the Millennium Dome is the biggest. The dome is 365 metres in diameter and 52 metres high with those 12 yellow supporting poles running through it. This represents days, weeks and months of the year.
The Emirates Air Line looks quite slow but it takes 10 minutes to cross the water and they double that speed in rush hour for the commuters.
The Cutty Sark was built in 1869 and sailed from London to Shanghai the next year full of wine, beer and spirit exports.It came back from Shanghai full to the brim with over a million pounds of tea.
The Greenwich Foot Tunnel took 3 years to build from 1899 to 1902. The very industrial steel panel section at the north end of the tunnel is the result of steel repairs after Second World War bomb damage. The tunnel is classed as a public highway which means, by law, it must be kept open 24 hours a day, everyday.
The name Greenwich dates back more than 1100 years. The 'Green' part of the name is self explanatory but the 'nwich' or 'wich' part refers to a 'harbor' or 'trading place'.
Greenwich has a lot of restaurants, markets, pubs, places to see and things to practically do and partake in. Of the 32 London boroughs, there are 4 with royal status. For 80 years there were only 3 but Greenwich was allowed to join the club to become the fourth in 2012 by order of the Queen. Greenwich once tried to apply for city status to become the 'City of Greenwich' but that got refused.
Greenwich is very well connected by transport. There are a lot of bus routes connected by a central bus station, boat services to Central London and 5 different types of train station serving different parts of the district.
Greenwich Park itself has always had 'royal' status along with Green Park and Hyde Park and some others. Some of the trees you can see in the park are over 350 years old.
King Edward the II asked Christopher Wren to design the Royal Observatory for some serious astronomy. They built it in 1675 for £520 and its still the largest telescope in the UK. The 'Public Standards of Length' on the wall in the park physically demonstrate precise lengths from the imperial measurement system.
Before the Observatory, there wasn't really any official, standardised way of measuring time around the world. Over centuries, sailors decided it made sense to sync their clocks to the already established
'Greenwich Mean Time' or 'GMT' which is now just known as Universal Time.

Kidlington is a large village and civil parish between the River Cherwell and the Oxford Canal, 5 miles north of Oxford and 7 ¹⁄₂ miles southwest of Bicester. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 13,723. Kidlington's toponym is derived from the Old English Cudelinga tun: the tun (settlement) of the Kidlings (sons) of Cydel-hence. The Domesday Book in 1086 records Chedelintone, and by 1214 the spelling Kedelinton appears in a Calendar of Bodleian Charters.
A railway station on the Oxford and Rugby Railway near Langford Lane was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1852. The station was named Woodstock Road although it was nearly 3 miles (5 km) from Woodstock and less than 1 mile (1.6 km) from Kidlington. The Oxford and Rugby Railway was part of the Great Western Railway, which in 1890 added a branch line to a new Blenheim and Woodstock railway station at Woodstock and renamed Woodstock Road Kidlington. British Railways closed Kidlington railway station in 1964. Kidlington has about 50 shops, banks and building societies, a public library, a large village hall and a weekly market. There are seven public houses, two cafes, and four restaurants. The public houses are concentrated along the main A4260 road through the village. North to south these are: the Highwayman Hotel (originally the Anchor, then the Railway Hotel, then the Wise Alderman, before being renamed again in 2009),[7] the Black Horse, the Black Bull, the Red Lion, as well as the King's Arms in the Moors, and the Six Bells in Mill Street. The Squire Bassett was converted into a Nepalese restaurant and renamed the Gurkha Village in 2012.
The headquarters of the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Thames Valley Police and the county St. John Ambulance are all in Kidlington, as is the UK head office of the European publishing company Elsevier. Oxford Airport, renamed London Oxford Airport in 2009, is also in Kidlington; since 1962 it has had a pilot training school that has trained thousands of pilots for many airlines in more than 40 countries. There are several industrial and business parks and a large motor park in the north of the village.
Kidlington has had a brass band since 1892, with earlier foundations dating back to at least the 1850s. The current band, Kidlington Concert Brass, was founded by the merger of Kidlington Silver Band and Oxford Concert Brass in 1992. It presents regular local concerts and has competed nationally in the highest grade for many years. Kidlington Amateur Operatic Society (KAOS) was founded in 1977, and presents concerts of varied choral material in the village several times annually in addition to staging regular productions of musicals.

Cardiff is the largest and capital of Wales. The eleventh-largest city in the United Kingdom, it is Wales's chief commercial centre, the base for most national cultural institutions and Welsh media, and the seat of the National Assembly for Wales.
Since the 1980s, Cardiff has seen significant development. A new waterfront area at Cardiff Bay contains the Senedd building, home to the Welsh Assembly and the Wales Millennium Centre arts complex. Current developments include the continuation of the redevelopment of the Cardiff Bay and city centre areas with projects such as the Cardiff International Sports Village, a BBC drama village, and a new business district in the city centre.

I visited Cardiff on May 9th, 2019 and stayed at the Future Inn Cardiff Bay hotel,
It was 8 pm when I left the hotel. From there I walked through the Red Dragon Centre and enjoyed my scenic evening walk at the bay area. The temperature was about 18 Celsius with a little breeze.
