Kanchanaburi Province, the train passes along the Wang Po Viaduct, Thailand. ( 72 )
This was mainly from my March 2016 trip when I took a private taxi from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi again. I wanted to get the train arriving this time across the Wang Po viaduct. I walked along the section of track next to the river and along to the next station before Tham Krasae station. At the Tham Krasae station there is a cave temple next to it which goes back quite some way under the rocks. I managed to walk deep into the cave beyond the temple Buddha. Tham Krasae station as a few eating places here, however I choose the large Restaurant at the start of the station. The views from here are spectacular across the river It was so hot that day,nearly 42 degrees I really didn’t drink enough water that day and suffered for it later. As usual the train was late and it meant a one hour 45 minute wait. It was worth it however after finally waiting to get the videos and photos.
This was my 2015 trip. My taxi driver and I drove to Kanchanaburi Station to catch the morning train to Nam Tok. He departed on the long journey by road. While I took my seat on the train. Many people on their first visit to Thailand don’t realize that each ticket has your own individual seat number, I had already made sure I had got a seat that would over look the Wang Po Viaduct on the left of the train going. The train finally arrived from Bangkok and unhooked it’s carriages went forward to enable it to reverse to collect all our carriages in the sidings of Kanchanaburi station then pulled back out onto the main line. This next part caught many people out, it then reversed and hooked up with the carriages it had just brought for Bangkok. It was the joining of the two that surprised everyone. It was not gentle but an almighty thud as the two met each other. All the carriages were then hooked up and the train set off for the River Kwae Bridge and to the final destination of Nam Tok.
As I guessed at the River Kwae Bridge station there were many tourists ready and waiting to board the train. They paid no attention to seating numbers, they just boarded and took any seats that would give them a good viewpoint of the viaduct. So be warned about this free - for - all, especially on a weekend when special tourist trains with observation coaches and Air Conditioned coaches are used. The journey to Wang Pho Viaduct was longer than I expected. Almost two hours and then the train slowed down to nearly a crawl, it had finally reached the Viaduct. The view over the river at this point is beautiful but the viaduct was not as long as I thought it would have been. I guess to the men that built it and in those conditions it probably felt too long. From the train you cannot apprehend the construction of the bridge or viaduct, clinging to the mountainous walls as it does. I feel the best bet to take all this area in, is to drive to Tham Krasae station by taxi / car or coach, before any arrival of any train ( so that you can photograph as it travels over this section ).
Doing this enables you to fully appreciate the construction, the work, the thought, the pains that went into the building of this wonderful piece of engineering. You can walk along this Viaduct - before or after any trains have passed, don’t get caught on the Viaduct there are very few safe places to get out of the way of the train as it passes. Taking this option enables you to also view the Tham Krasae caves and enjoy a Thai meal in the restaurant here. There is also a street market here to while away your time. Many tour operators cover this trip to this part of Kanchanaburi. For me personally I was stuck with the journey I choose to do this time. Many tourist left the train at this stage to get on some of the many tourist coaches waiting at this station. The train then set off for the next station which was Wang Yai. It was at this point my taxi driver phoned me to say he was waiting here and not at Nam Tok station. I hurriedly gathered all my things and just managed to get off the train before it set off for the terminal station of Nam Tok. The journey back to Kanchanaburi was far more picturesque than the journey to Wang Yai. Then from there we traveled back to Bangkok, the time being nearly 8.30 pm when we got back to the city centre
