The north of Syria is well known for its remarkable archaeology. In the third and second centuries B.C. the Near East was ruled by the Seleukide Realm. The origin of the ancient city of Apameia dates back to the time of the founder of this realm, Seleukos The First, a general who served under Alexander The Great.Although the surrounding fields are now covered with huge boulders this was once the location of the largest city in the Orient yet almost nothing remains of the former city of Apameia. The former wealth and power of Apameia is reflected by its impressive one point eight kilometre long colonnade. The street points precisely in a north-south direction and measures thirty seven point five metres wide. It was, and still is, the backbone of this ancient city and around four hundred columns have been rebuilt. According to various inscriptions the colonnade originated at the beginning of the first century A.D. Following a catastrophic earthquake in the twelfth century and various battles for power, the city was finally abandoned. Only the impressive colonnade now demonstrates the former influence and greatness of this legendary ancient city. Thus some of the glory of Apameia lives on!

Prior to the Syrian Conflict, Travel Tales visited the famed city of Aleppo, Syria losing themselves in a labyrinth of bustling passageways and chatting with merchants and locals. They described their experience a 'magical and memorable' and lucky for us they have gathered up some of their travel videos to share with all of us.

사원 옆에는 아랍전통시장이 있다. 아랍세계에서 가장 크다는 이 시장은 사람들로 넘쳐나고 있었다. 고대부터 다마스쿠스는 무역의 교차로에 위치하고 있어서 수많은 상인과 엄청난 물자가 몰려들던 곳이다. 그러한 역사적 전통을 오늘날에도 유지하고 있는 곳이 바로 이 전통시장이다. 중앙통로에 자리한 가게들은 많이 현대화된 모습이지만 명성에 걸맞게 갖가지 토산품과 외래상품들로 가득 차 있다. 중앙통로를 벗어나 뒷골목으로 가보면 보다. 재래시장 냄새를 풍기는 곳이 나온다. 파는 물건도 다양해 농산물과 각종 향신료 약재 등을 볼 수 있다. 말 그대로 있어야 할 건 다 있고 없어야 할 건 없는 시장이다. 특히 눈에 띄는 것은 낙타고기, 맛보다는 스테미너식으로 인기라고 한다. 온갖 치장을 한 특이한 복장의 이 사람은 음료장수, 아랍 전통의 물장수에서 유래했다. 값은 한 잔에 10 리라, 우리 돈으로 300원 이다. 시장을 유심히 보면 또 하나의 특징을 발견할 수 있는데 가게 주인들이 모두 남자라는 사실. 여자들의 바깥 활동을 금기시하는 이슬람문화 탓 이라고 하는데... 심지어 여자 속옷 가게 주인도 남자다. “이유는 이곳에 시리아 사람이 아닌 많은 외국인들이 다니기 때문이죠. 불미스러운 일들이 생길 수가 있잖아요.”

Waterwheel Norias of Hama نواعير حماة in Syria سوريا
The Norias of Hama are a number of norias (wheels of pots) Water Wheels along the Orontes River in the city of Hama, Syria. Only seventeen of the original norias remain. They are mostly unused now and serve an aesthetic purpose.
