San Basilio de Palenque or Palenque de San Basilio is a Palenque village and corregimiento in the Municipality of Mahates, Bolivar in northern Colombia. In 2005 the village was declared Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Palenque is also considered the first free town in the Americas.

    Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar Palacios Ponte y Blanco , generally known as Simón Bolívar and also colloquially as El Libertador, was a Venezuelan military and political leader who liberated what are currently the republics of Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru as sovereign states, independent of the Spanish Empire.
