Cerca de Cambridge se encuentra Ely, una pequeña ciudad famosa por su magnífica catedral románica y gótica. Su construcción comenzó en 1083, y hoy en día es un fascinante lugar donde conocer la historia de la región, a la vez que se admira esta impresionante obra arquitectónica.
Se conoce localmente como “la nave de los Fens” debido a su forma que pareciera que se elevara por lo alto de los paisajes llanos. La Catedral de Ely o Iglesia Catedral de la Santa e Indivisible Trinidad de Ely, es la iglesia principal de Ely, en el condado de Cambridgeshire.
Durante el reinado de Guillermo I de Inglaterra, se llevo a cabo la edificación actual que se conoce como Catedra de Ely. Parece que esta construcción fue iniciada por el abad Simeón en los años 1082-1094. La Catedral fue hecha a base de piedras extraídas de Barnack, con decoraciones en mármol de Purbeck. Una de las singularidades de la iglesia, es que en los planos, ésta tiene forma de cruz.
El largo total de la iglesia es de 163,7 metros y con la nave con un poco más de 75 metros de largo, La Catedral de Ely, esta declarada todavía como la más larga de toda Gran Bretaña. Por el ancho total del edificio se eleva un octágono central, llegando hasta la única cúpula gótica en existencia.
Hoy en día, la Catedral de Ely es activamente visitada y en uso, alberga una colección de vitrales que datan del siglo XIII y es considerada como una obra de importancia nacional. Además de esto contiene obras de artistas contemporáneos sobresalientes como Ervin Bossanyi.
La magnífica obra arquitectónica ha sido también imagen en populares cintas cinematográficas como The Other Boleyn Girl y Elizabeth: La edad de oro, y también fue portada en uno de los álbumes de Pink Floyd.

Будівництво собору продовжувалося майже триста років, з 1083 року до 1375 рік. Раніше на цьому місці розташовувалася церква, заснована ще в VII столітті Святою Етельдредою (вона також відома як Свята Одрі) разом з монастирем, зруйнованим в IX столітті за часів вікінгів. При скасуванні монастирів Генріхом VIII собор постраждав відносно мало, хоча були серйозно пошкоджені статуї в каплиці та усипальниця Етельдреди. До 1541 році собор було відновлено.
У XVII столітті єпископом Ілі став Метью Рен, дядько знаменитого архітектора сера Крістофера Рена, який в 1650-е роках спроектував на північній стороні собору браму в готичному стилі.

Trip to Nottingham, England | UK travel vlog
A trip to Nottingham is not complete if you don't see the caves under the streets. On our last day in Nottingham, England, we visit the City of Caves, the National Justice Museum, Lace Market and Hockley (both within walking distance from the Nottingham city centre), and then we return to Old Market square.
