1. Tyndale MonumentNorth Nibley William Tyndale was an English scholar who became a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation in the years leading up to his execution. He is well known for his translation of the Bible into English. He was influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus, who made the Greek New Testament available in Europe, and by Martin Luther. A number of partial translations had been made from the seventh century onward, but the spread of Wycliffe's Bible in the late 14th century led to the death penalty for anyone found in unlicensed possession of Scripture in English, although translations were available in all other major European languages.Tyndale's translation was the first English Bible to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, the first English translation to use Jehovah as God's name as pre... VISIT WILLIAM TYNDAL MONUMENT - FREE THINGS TO DO IN SOUTH WEST ENGLAND
Standing high on top of Nibley Knoll stands the William Tyndale Monument.
The tower stands 111ft tall and dominates the skyline of the peaceful village of Nibley.
On a clear day a 120 step climb to the top will be rewarded with fantastic views across the river Severn as far as Wales.
Parking is available in a lay-by at the foot of the hill, and a 10 - 15 minute walk of medium difficulty will take you to the peak of the hill where the tower stands.
There is an honesty box at the entrance to the tower if you decide climb to the top, please give generously as all money goes towards upkeep and maintenance of this magnificent monument.
The tower was constructed in 1863 in remembrance of William Tyndale l who gave his life to translate the New Testament into English in 1526.
