Salta is a province of Argentina, located in the northwest of the country. Neighboring provinces are from the east clockwise Formosa, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Tucumán and Catamarca. It also surrounds Jujuy. To the north it borders Bolivia and Paraguay and to the west lies Chile.

  • 3. Nevado de Acay Salta
    Nevado de Acay is a 5,950-metre-high mountain in Argentina. It is a volcanic intrusion that formed during the Miocene and was later exposed. The intrusion is formed by monzonite and is associated with a fault system that also connects to neighbouring volcanoes. While not presently glaciated, it contains a seasonal snowpack and is the source of several streams and rivers, including the Rio Salado. A number of archeological sites have been found on Nevado de Acay and mining activity occurred there until recent times.

    The Abra del Acay in La Poma Department, Salta Province, Argentina is the highest point in Argentina's National Route 40. Located at 24°23′S 66°14′W, its altitude is 4,972 meters , even though an old sign informs visitors it stands at 4,895 meters . The Abra del Acay is approximately 25 kilometers geodesic distance southeast from San Antonio de los Cobres, although the direct route by road is about 45 kilometers . Inaugurated on 8 July 1960 after three years of construction, this unpaved part of the National Route 40 is only suitable for all-terrain vehicles, with the exception of some months in the year when meteorological and maintenance conditions allow normal vehicles to transit. The road inclination of 4.5% and oxygen deprivation due to altitude make the crossing difficult for b...

    The Serranía de Hornocal are a range of mountains located 25 kilometers from the city of Humahuaca in the Argentine province of Jujuy. Exposed in the range is the limestone formation called Yacoraite that extends from Salta, Argentina, through the Argentine Quebrada de Humahuaca and then through the Bolivian Altiplano to Peru.The mountains reach an altitude of 4761 meters above sea level.
